Woody Allen project updates

5 March 2010 4:31 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The last time we talked about Woody it was the news of Owen Wilson’s joining Woody’s next project. Since then the yet-untitled project has picked up a pair of beautiful Hollywood starlets in Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (La vie en rose) and Rachel McAdams (probably won a Teen Choice Award for something). Filming on this project begins this summer in Paris with an expected 2011 release date.

Set to release this fall is Woody’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger starring Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts, Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto and Lucy Punch. Filmed August 2009 in London and premiering at this year’s Cannes Film Festival You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger has been purchased by Sony Pictures Classics for U.S. distribution. Sony Pictures Classics also distributed Allen’s Sweet and Lowdown (1999) as well as 2009’s Whatever Works.

Sony Classics Back In Biz With Woody

4 March 2010 1:00 AM, PST | Deadline Hollywood | See recent Deadline Hollywood news »

I wanted to get this in the Gotham record, even though it happened yesterday. Sony Pictures Classics partners Michael Barker and Tom Bernard picked up North American distribution rights to Woody Allen's new film, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. The London-set picture stars Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Freida Pinto and Naomi Watts, and Spc will release it this fall. Barker and Bernard released Allan's last film, Whatever Works, and 1999’s Sweet and Lowdown. The new film was financed by Spain-based Mediapro, which is also funding his next film, a Paris-based untitled comedy that has Owen Wilson and [...] »

With romantic entanglements between Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Freida Pinto and Naomi Watts, Spc will have a lot more ease in marketing this film - which they've already set as a domestic fall release. The croisette-bound film You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger revolves around different members of a family, their tangled love lives and their attempts to try to solve their problems. Marion Cotillard is Owen Wilson's Muse?!

3 March 2010 10:45 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If we go by sheer casting strangeness alone, Woody Allen's next film should be quite noteworthy. His casting sheets always sound intriguing, but not necessarily surprising -- great actors taking roles you can easily imagine them playing (especially if you think of the May-December Whatever Works). But this time he's grabbed not only the First Lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, but also Owen Wilson, of all people. Who on earth could be next?

According to Deadline Hollywood -- Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard. Now she's someone I'd expect to pop up in the Woodyverse. She's talented, young, female, and beautiful -- everything Mr. Allen likes in an actress. (Oh yes, and French!) There's more -- with this announcement, we also get one small detail in Woody's usually pre-production void of silence. We don't know a title, or a plot, but Cotillard will play Wilson's "muse." Considering that, I think it's fair »

Marion Cotillard Is Woody Allen's Next Leading Lady

2 March 2010 3:49 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Last month we found out that Owen Wilson will star in Woody Allen.s next film and now we.ve got another piece to the puzzle, Marion Cotillard. According to Deadline Hollywood, Cotillard will star alongside Wilson in the untitled project. Like the title, the plot is also unknown. The article also addresses France.s First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.s involvement, but reports that nothing has been made official. Minus his most recent release, Whatever Works, Allen is continuing to opt for overseas filming locations for financial reasons. This pic will be financed by Spain.s Mediapro as a part of their three-picture arrangement, the first of which, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, just wrapped in London. So, Wilson and Cotillard. Now this is an unusual pairing. Perhaps this sentiment stems from the fact that the two tend towards completely different genres, Wilson aiming to tickle your funny »

Shrek Forever After Opens Tribeca

The Tribeca Film Festival announced this morning that Shrek Forever After will open this year's fest April 21 in New York, marking the first time an animated (let alone) 3-D feature has kicked off the eight-year old event. It's kind of a step back from the New Yorkiness of last year's opener Whatever Works, but Mike Myers's return to public life after The Love Guru is surely worth something all by itself. More to come as Tribeca announces its remaining selections on March 10 and 15. [Tff] »

Oscar Against Comedy?

27 February 2010 8:35 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

What happened with all good old films that used to make us cry out of laughter? Really, guys, I want to see some movies that will make me laugh.

Ok, maybe we became too occupied with every day routine, maybe we still think too much about our jobs, money, family problems? Problems with our neighbors? No, no, I’m not hinting on any movie… (yet)!

While watching this year’s Oscar nominations, one can’t help but wonder – why isn’t there category for best Comedy? Go out and tell some director – “man, that was a good job, here’s the Oscar!” Is it possible that somewhere out there does not exist some great, funny masterpiece that will make our stomach hurt?

Or is there some problem in Academy policy that just thinks that is not worth our attention? And yes, we do understand that we’re living in some crazy time, »

Casting Notes: Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood Work with Todd Haynes; Jamie Foxx and Ashton Kutcher are Buddies; Hugh Laurie Romances Leighton Meester

26 February 2010 11:21 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I'm excited about the upcoming version of Mildred Pierce to be directed by Todd Haynes. Already set to star Kate Winslet in the title role, the HBO mini-series has just added a couple more good names: Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood. Sure, Wood's career has been spotty, but there's something that suggests she can do a lot more than what we've seen her manage recently. I really liked her in Woody Allen's Whatever Works, for example. The obvious guess is that Pearce will play the husband from whom Mildred Pierce splits and that Wood will play their daughter. But that's unconfirmed for now. [Production Weekly] After the break, it's buddy comedy time again, and the Hugh Laurie/Catherine Keener indie gets another cast member. Today might not be the best day to announce a new buddy comedy, as Cop Out is opening to justifiably dismal reviews. But screw it, Jamie Foxx »

'Slumdog Millionaire' Star Freida Pinto Joins Tarsem’s Greek Myth Epic ‘War Of The Gods’

24 February 2010 11:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Following a tad slowly on the heels of "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief" and the upcoming "Clash of the Titans" remake is another blockbuster involving Greek mythology: "War of the Gods" (aka "Dawn of War"), a sword-and-sandals epic being helmed by visionary filmmaker Tarsem ("The Fall") that will tell the story of Athens founder and legendary Minotaur-killer Theseus. Henry Cavill (Showtime's "The Tudors") will star as the hero, and now joining him, according to Variety, is Indian actress Freida Pinto ("Slumdog Millionaire").

Pinto will play Phaedra, "an oracle priestess" and (future?) wife of Theseus, who joins him in the quest to stop the titular war -- pitting the younger Olympian gods against the elder Titan gods -- from beginning. The character has been portrayed many times on screen, mainly in adaptations of plays by Euripides and Jean Racine, the most recent of which starred Helen Mirren in the part. »

Who Wore It Better – Kristen Stewart Or…Kristen Stewart?

22 February 2010 4:07 PM, PST | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Which K-Stew look do you prefer? Dark and sultry or sweet and angelic?

When we think of Kristen Stewart, we think of her Twilight character, Bella Swan. Swan makes us think white, which is why we’re totally ga-ga over the Chanel mini she wore to the BAFTA awards in London Feb. 21.

But we can’t discredit the rockin’ Emilio Pucci geometic mini (hello legs!) the 19-year-old actress wore to the Elle Style Awards (also in London) on Feb. 22.

Whatever works, K-Stew. You look fab Both ways – and we’re sure your Twilight co-star and Bf, Robert Pattinson, agrees!

Owen Wilson Signs on to Star in Woody Allen Movie

19 February 2010 10:18 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

After decades of turning to the world’s most beautiful women as his inspiration, RiskyBiz reports that Woody Allen is now following up his work with Larry David by signing Owen Wilson as one of the main stars of his new, as-yet-untitled movie.

That doesn’t mean, however, that there still won’t be at least one beauty on the set when this shoots this summer. Oddly enough, France’s first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, has revealed that she too would be in the movie, though Allen’s camp hasn’t confirmed that.

Even though I found Whatever Works, Allen’s work with the usually incredibly funny David, to be an almost complete disaster, with the right material, Wilson would seem to have the dry sort of wit Allen can certainly tap into (or at least he used to in Wes Anderson flicks like Bottle Rocket and The Royal Tenenbaums.)

Owen Wilson takes Woody Allen role

19 February 2010 7:31 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Marley & Me actor signs to star in the director's upcoming movie, which will also feature a cameo from Carla Bruni-Sarkozy

Jason Biggs, Kenneth Branagh, Larry David, John Cusack. Now Owen Wilson looks set to join the list of actors who have tried their hand at being Woody Allen's onscreen alter ego.

The 41-year-old star has signed on for Allen's new film, due to shoot this summer. The only other confirmed casting is Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the wife of the French president, whose role is thought to be a small one.

Allen enjoyed something of a critical and commercial renaissance last year with the success of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a romance set in Spain which won star Penélope Cruz a best supporting actress Oscar.

But his following film, Whatever Works, which opened New York's Tribeca film festival last spring, has yet to secure a UK release date.

Shrewd DVD strategies reap rewards with Oscar nominations

4 February 2010 8:39 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

So how did "A Serious Man" pull off that underdog Oscar nomination for best picture? Perhaps because it was among the first wave of DVD screeners shipped to academy members, long before the deluge of discs that arrived during the holiday season. Such an early-out-of-the-gate strategy certainly helped "Slumdog Millionaire" in last year's derby as it romped to victory with eight wins, including best picture. And it might have helped land lead acting nods last year for Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor") and Melissa Leo ("Frozen River"), whose DVDs were among the first dozen discs to get into Oscar voters' hands. Likewise for this year's lead actress contender Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and supporting actor nominee Woody Harrelson ("The Messenger"). Other films that did well in past derbies, like "Juno" (2007) and "Hustle and Flow" (2005), were also delivered to the mailboxes of Oscar voters early in the award cycle.
