Disney Sets Date For Mars Needs Moms

10 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Disney will be spending quite a bit of time on Mars in the coming years. We've been hearing for a while now about the Willem Dafoe vehicle John Carter of Mars, which pits a Civil War veteran against 12-foot-tall giants, and now they've announced a release date for Mars Needs Moms, about a boy who travels to Mars to rescue his kidnapped mother. We knew the film was in the works over a year ago, but now per Variety, the Mouse House has announced a release date. The first of its Martian riddled films, Mom, on March 11, 2011, which will be about a year before John Carter. The film will be put together much in the same vein as The Polar Express, which predictable as it's being produced by Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis. This also means that, like Zemeckis' last project A Christmas Carol, we're going to be forced to »

Even Monkeys Recognize The Uncanny Valley

9 March 2010 11:37 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Much like James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis has always been a director on the cutting edge of film technology. The most recent way he has cemented this title is through his exclusive use of motion capture in The Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol. There is a serious problem with this filming technique, however, and it is called "the uncanny valley." To put it simply, the Uncanny Valley is that creepy feeling you get when you look behind the eyes of motion capture characters and discover the lack of a soul. To be more scientific about it, it is a theory that "when robots and other facsimiles of humans look and act almost like actual humans, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers." (Thanks Wikipedia!) One word you might notice is stuck in there is "theory;" the uncanny valley has not yet been proven as scientific fact. Thanks »

Rep Denies Hoskins' Retirement Claims

28 February 2010 3:01 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A representative for Bob Hoskins has contradicted the actor over his retirement plans, insisting the star is "definitely interested in working."

The Who Framed Roger Rabbit star's last movie appearance came in 2009's A Christmas Carol, voicing a character in the animated blockbuster alongside Jim Carrey and Colin Firth.

But Hoskins, who has two films set for release this year, told journalists at a recent screening in London that he has "no plans" to make any more movies, according to Britain's Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

He said, "I've got no plans to do any more films. I've been to America and that's where you make the money, and I have. In England, we only do art films, and if you want to that, good luck. I don't.

"It's just wonderful to wake up in the morning and know I haven't got to do anything that day."

But a spokesperson for Hoskins is adamant the star must have been joking.

The rep tells the publication, "He is definitely interested in working. I don't know where that's come from." »

Andrew Koenig, Olympic Hockey And 'Source Code' In Today's Twitter-Wood

22 February 2010 1:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Olympic ice hockey had Canadians and American alike tweeting last night, and Canadian Twitter-Wood ambassador William Shatner was among them. The epic win by the U.S., as well as a few other spectacular matches from the day showed up in posts, including a short conversation between Jim Carrey and Michael Chiklis, and it turns out Carrey is a big admirer of Russia's Alex Ovechkin.

There's been drama off the ice in Vancouver as well, though, as the son of Shatner's former "Star Trek" co-star Walter Koenig has been declared missing there. LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton both tweeted some links to help get the word out about Andrew Koenig, who hasn't been heard from since February 14th. Find out out more about Koenig, as well as what "Moon" director Duncan Jones is moving on to now and what kind of pet Jessica Simpson is thinking about adopting. All such »

17 February 2010 11:37 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Scottish movie star Ewan McGregor has explained the delay of his new movie, "I Love You Phillip Morris" - Disney bosses didn't want young film fans thinking their Ebenezer Scrooge was gay. The film, in which McGregor and Jim Carrey play lovers, was initially slated for release in 2009, but movie bosses behind the "A Christmas Carol" blockbuster feared Carrey's portrayal of a gay man would confuse their audience, according to the Scot.

McGregor tells the new issue of Out magazine, "There was talk that Disney fended off the release until after 'A Christmas Carol' came out. They didn't want kids thinking Ebenezer Scrooge was a bender."

"I Love You Phillip Morris", which was a sensation at last year's in January 2009 Sundance Film Festival in Utah, will finally hit cinemas at the end of March. Other artists who join Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey in cast ensemble included Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, »

Joe Jonas and his brother Nick will battle it out at the upcoming Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards after both were nominated for a top honour.

The siblings received nods in the Favourite TV Actor category for their roles in Disney show Jonas - but face tough competition from twins Cole and Dylan Sprouse, who star in The Suite Life on Deck.

Disney queen Miley Cyrus is up against her pal Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place), Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly) and Keke Palmer (True Jackson, VP) for the Favourite TV Actress award - but her hit series Hannah Montana has been sensationally snubbed in the Favourite TV Show category.

It's the battle of the movie hunks in the Favourite Actor category - Zac Efron (17 Again) will face off against Taylor Lautner (The Twilight Saga: New Moon), Shia LeBeouf (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Tyler Perry (Star Trek).

Ewan McGregor on the thrill of falling in love with Jim Carrey

16 February 2010 12:48 PM, PST | Zap2It - The Dish Rag | See recent Zap2It - The Dish Rag news »

Ewan McGregor's naughty bits have been onscreen almost as often -- if not more -- than Harvey Keitel's.

His backside debuted in" What the Butler Saw" and his frontside has been seen in "Trainspotting," "The Pillow Book," and  "Velvet Goldmine." Not that we're keeping count or anything.

But those films are tame to his upcoming movie, "I Love You Phillip Morris," costarring Jim Carrey.

Based on a true love story, the movie follows Steven Russell, a sociopath/con artist played by Carrey and his relationship with Phillip Morris, played by McGregor.

Ewan tells Out magazine why he thinks the film, a hit at the 2009 Sundance fest, has been delayed in release.

First, there's a lot of sex. A lot of gay sex. And part of the delay may have been due to Carrey's holiday movie, "A Christmas Carol."

Oscars: The Academy Protests 3-D Animation

2 February 2010 1:41 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

For anyone who’s been paying attention to the Oscar race, there were few surprises in this morning’s nominations. The only two real upsets, as far as I’m concerned, took place in the animated categories. First, the announcement of Tom Moore’s The Secret of Kells among the nominated features induced a nationwide wave of befuddlement and puzzled cries of “What the fuck is The Secret of Kells and how did it beat out the quite successful Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs?” Audiences will have a chance to find out for themselves in March, when the European-produced, 2-D gem, about the crafting of the legendary, 9th-century Irish masterpiece of Biblical illumination, is released in U.S. As our friends at Movieline point out, “They say it’s an honor just to be nominated. In Kells’ case, it’s also a multimillion publicity campaign that doesn’t cost a cent. »

It’s a good thing first-time director Tom Ford -- yes, the fashion designer -- cast someone with the chops of Colin Firth (A Christmas Carol) as his leading man, because it meant that Firth could be left to carry the movie while Ford got on with what was clearly his primary intention: making the cinematic equivalent of a fashion magazine spread. Or perhaps Ford deliberately chose Firth so he, the director, wouldn’t have to worry about niggling little things like story and character. Whatever the case: it is a fact that this intimate drama works as well as it does because Firth is so compelling, so plausible, so heartbreaking »
