Worst Hollywood Weekend In 7 Years?

6 September 2008 4:29 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Last night I just ignored the box-office results, which I cover on a weekly basis based on early Friday numbers, but today I decided I just couldn't go without saying anything. Steve Mason at Fantasy Moguls is saying this weekend is likely to be the worst weekend in Hollywood in seven years! He says you "have to go back to September 21-23, 2001 to find a 3-day" weekend as slow as this one in which the top 12 movies look to gross an estimated $44.43 million. In 2001 the number was $43.53 million. Lionsgate's unscreened Bangkok Dangerous looks to just beat out Tropic Thunder with a potential $6.85 million over Thunder's $6.43, which means it could still go either way. The only other new releases were small ones and played no effect on the overall tally. The Dark Knight looks to hold the third spot followed by The House Bunny and Babylon A.D. to round out the top five.

Box Office - 'Bangkok' Less Than Dangerous with $2.3 Million on Friday

6 September 2008 11:33 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The worst weekend in how long? Steve Mason at Fantasy Moguls is predicting a $44 million weekend for the top 12 movies in the United States, and you'd have to go back to September 2001 for a weekend that bad. There were other things on people's minds that month, of course.

Only one weekend in this decade has failed to hit $40 million with its top 12, and that was in 2000. Both top movies on those weekends, incidentally, starred Keanu Reeves.

So what does $44 million mean? It means that Nicolas Cage's new flick, Bangkok Dangerous, is opening with a whimper; the Friday estimate is just over $2 million, so the weekend figure may be in the high sixes or low sevens. Think about that: $2 million on opening day. For the number one movie in the country.

I would pin a lot of this on the opening weekend of NFL, which, as everyone knows, is the

Black Challenges Brolin To 'Pony Up' For Cancer

6 September 2008 6:58 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Funnyman Jack Black took celebrities taking donation calls at Friday night's Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon in America to task - by demanding they phone each other with pledges.

The Tropic Thunder star admitted he has watched celebrity telethons as a cynic in the past - and he wanted to make sure this TV special would be a big winner.

He said, "You know that if one of those lucky so-and-so's donated two per cent of what they made, we could all go back to (TV show) Project Runway."

He then tackled actor Josh Brolin, who was in the middle of a pledge call and ordered him to put the phone down, yelling, "Hang up the freaking phone!"

Black then told Brolin to call comedienne Ellen DeGeneres, who was seated a few desks away from the movie star on the Kodak Theatre stage, adding, "Make a pledge. What did you make on the Coen Brothers (film - No Country For Old Men)?"

Black then turned to the cameras and assured the viewers watching the show, "I'm gonna make these gravy trainers pony up."

Cruise to Voice 'Shrek' Villain?

5 September 2008 5:46 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The career restructuring of Tom Cruise will continue, whether you like it or not. Cinema Blend is reporting today that they've received word from a well-placed source that DreamWorks is considering casting Tom as the villain in 2010's Shrek Goes Fourth.

I can only imagine that the studio was over the moon with his cameo in Tropic Thunder, and they might even be speculating that Cruise's career may be in full rebound mode in a couple of years. It is also believed that Shrek 4 director Mike Mitchell is something of a Cruise fan, which couldn't hurt. Expect Shrek Goes Fourth to be an origin story, of sorts, explaining how he wound up in the swamp in the first place.

My guess is he used to live somewhere much nicer until he started making movies like The Love Guru.

Tie Predicted For Box Office -- Or Is It Thai?

5 September 2008 10:35 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

This weekend marks the official start of the fall box-office season, and it could hardly be less auspicious. The only film to open wide is Lionsgate's Bangkok Dangerous, starring Nicolas Cage, which was not screened for critics. The studio itself, apparently, does not have high expectations for it and reportedly has cut its marketing budget for it. Box-office forecasters are predicting that it will take in about $10 million in its debut, about what they're forecasting for the fourth week of Tropic Thunder, which has held the top-spot since its debut. The weekend after Labor Day is considered one of the slowest weekends of the year by studio executives -- who plan accordingly. Opening in limited release (96 theaters) this weekend is the movie Everybody Wants to Be Italian, which reviewers promptly covered in cement and drowned. Jeannette Catsoulis writes in the New York Times: "Assuming the title was ever correct, it won't be by the time you exit the theater."

Stiller Moves Closer To Parents

5 September 2008 5:12 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Hollywood star Ben Stiller is determined to spend more time with his family - he has reportedly bought an apartment in the same building as his parents.

The Tropic Thunder actor is said to have splashed out $8.8 million (GBP5 million) on a three-bedroom New York home so he can be close to his mum and dad.

A source tells Scottish newspaper the Daily Record, "He starred in Meet The Parents and now he is doing it in real life."

Weekend Film Focus - "Bangkok Dangerous"

5 September 2008 4:20 AM, PDT | From Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news

The Pang brothers Oxide and Danny Pang co-helm the remake of the 1999 actioner "Bangkok Dangerous." Truly versatile, hard-working Nicolas Cage stars in the new version written by Jason Richman ("Bad Company," "Swing Vote"). The film debuts on September 5th in over 2,500+ cinemas and tries it's luck against "Tropic Thunder" which has a three weekend top spot run. The busy Cage is up next in Alex Proyas'"Knowing" sci-fi thriller and frontlines a strong cast including Penelope Cruz, Steve Buscemi, Bill Nighy and Kelly Garner in "G-Force." "Knowing" helmer Proyas is known for "Dark City," "The Crow" and "I, Robot."

Tiff Review: Rachel Getting Married

4 September 2008 6:32 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Rachel Getting Married is a terse, smart, funny and tough family drama about forgiveness and failure written by Jenny Lumet; it's also a loose, smart, broad and bright film about family and love directed by Jonathan Demme. When these two things are in sync, the end result is something truly impressive - a moving story that appeals to your heart and soul without insulting your intelligence, a film full of big scenes that never stoops to the most obvious possible iteration of those big scenes, a movie loaded with great and sincere performances from the top down. When the two parts of Rachel Getting Married fall out of synch - as they do, most notably, in the last third of the film during Demme's raucous, joyous post-wedding reception - it's less catastrophic than it is curious, and the final film is still very much worth watching.

Tom Cruise to voice villain in ‘Shrek 4’?

4 September 2008 6:22 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

It’s just a rumor at this point, but according to Cinema Blend, Tom Crusie is being considered to lend his voice to one of the villains you’ll see in DreamWorks Animations’ “Shrek Goes Fourth,” which is due in theaters in 2010.

As Josh points out, not much is known about the film at this stage. What we do know is that Mike Mitchell is going to direct. His credits include “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,” the disastrous “Surviving Christmas” and the better “Sky High.”

Tom Cruise voicing a bad guy in a “Shrek” sequel? Well, why not? Chances are the film’s not going to be great anyway. I really enjoyed the first and second film in the series, but the enthusiasm started to wear off in “Shrek the Third.”

I’m not a big Tom Cruise fan, although I openly admit that I absolutely loved his recent cameo in Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder.

Box-Office Oracle: Sep. 5 - Sep. 7, 2008

4 September 2008 2:27 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks in a Row 1. Tropic Thunder Why not a month straight? It's NFL opening weekend which should hurt the actioner (Bangkok Dangerous) more than the comedy. Also, if you look at Nic Cage's September history it isn't pretty. Lord of War, Matchstick Men, and The Wicker Man are all September releases that didn't hit double digits opening weekend. Estimate: $8.4 million 2. Bangkok Dangerous Plus, do you really think I want to root for Bangkok Dangerous this weekend? Trust me, I don't. And at this level of box office dollars it doesn't make a difference anyway. I know Brad likes to hammer my predictions but we're talking about seventeen people per showtime for this one. Seventeen people x seven dollars per show x nine shows per day x three days in the weekend = this box office number. So if that number jumps to 30 people all of a sudden I'm way off.

Fearless Forecast - Nic Cage 'Dangerous' Enough

4 September 2008 11:51 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

There's not a whole lot to talk about with this weekend's box office - thanks, Bangkok Dangerous - so we're going to take some time to reflect on summer, and in particular, our own predictions we made throughout Hollywood's biggest season.

Overall, we did pretty well with our weekly predictions. Our summer overview was not successful at all, but we did that at the very beginning of May and it's harder to project some of that stuff months away. Still: Who would've thought the X-Files sequel would make about $30 million? Or that Prince Caspian would be come up so short? The Dark Knight at half a billion dollars? Nobody thought that.

But we had some pretty good success, predicting Sex and The City would beat Indiana Jones in the last weekend in May (that was an unpopular decision). We said Wall-e wouldn't run away with its opening weekend race against Wanted,

'Shrek Goes Fourth' Villain to Be Voiced by Tom Cruise

4 September 2008 1:32 AM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Rumor has it that Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has been considered for a part in "Shrek 4". According to Cinema Blend, the 46-year-old may be on the run to voice one of the villains in the next installment of the Ogre comedic tale. Nonetheless, it should be noted that the truth in Cruise's participation has yet to be proven.

"Shrek Goes Fourth", the fourth installment of the hit animation movies from DreamWorks, has been said to be dealing with the origin story of the titular character. Allegedly, it will have its four main actors, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas, back to fill in their characters' voices. The flick is slated for May 21, 2010 release.

Meanwhile, Cruise has recently made a cameo appearance in the successful comedy movie from Ben Stiller, "Tropic Thunder" which was opened in theaters on August 13. The husband of actress Katie Holmes will next be

Box Office: Bangkok Dangerous Arrives

3 September 2008 7:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Movie tickets were a tough sell for labor day weekend, as Babylon A.D and Traitor were the only two of last week's four new releases to finish in the top five. Disaster Movie took seventh place and College took fifteenth, allowing Tropic Thunder to hold the number one spot for a third week. Here's the top five:

1. Tropic Thunder: $11.5 million

2. Babylon A.D.: $9.4 million

3. The Dark Knight: $8.6 million

4. The House Bunny: $8.3 million

5. Traitor: $7.8 million

The summer movie season is over and Hollywood is pausing to breath before moving on. We've only got one wide release this weekend.

Bangkok Dangerous:

What's It All About: Directors Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang remake their own 1999 Thai film. Nicolas Cage stars as a hitman who travels to Bangkok for four assassinations.

Why It Might Do Well: If you're jonesing for a new release, this is the only act in town.

Box Office: Thunder And Drizzles

3 September 2008 10:35 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Tropic Thunder may have been the No. 1 film at the box office over the Labor Day weekend but the title hardly described the bleak state of the movie business overall as ticket sales fell a whopping 23.5 percent below the comparable holiday weekend a year ago. Tropic Thunder earned just $14.6 million compared with $30.6 million for Halloween, which led the box office last Labor Day weekend. And while the movie has now taken in $86.9 million, it has a long way to go before it can cover its $90-million cost after payments to theaters and marketing and distribution expenses are taken into account. For the year, total revenue for all films stood at $6.667 billion, down 0.86 percent from last year's $6.725 billion. Attendance was down 4.74 percent, according to figures from Media by Numbers.

The top ten films over the four-day Labor Day weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Tropic Thunder, Paramount, $14,602,121, 3 Wks. ($86,935,945); 2. Babylon A.D. Fox, $11,541,571, (New); 3. The Dark Knight, Warner Bros., $11,127,290, 7 Wks. ($504,798,337); 4. The House Bunny, Sony, $10,177,701, 2 Wks. ($29,728,944); 5. Traitor, Overture Films, $10,006,327, 1 Wk. ($11,507,654-- from Wednesday); 6. Death Race, Universal, $7,889,755, 2 Wks. ($24,739,285); 7. Thunder Reigns While Gustav Rains

2 September 2008 10:38 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The four-day Labor Day holiday, ordinarily a lackluster one at the box office, lacked even more luster than usual this year, as the top film, DreamWorks/Paramount's Tropic Thunder took in just $14.3 million. Last year, Halloween opened with $30.6 million, a record for the holiday. It was the sixth consecutive weekend that the box office produced totals lower than last year. "Kind of an underwhelming end to a great summer," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office trackers Media by Numbers, told the Associated Press. The box office, he indicated has had to compete with the Olympics and Hurricane Gustav (which washed out attendance in a wide area of the Southeast) and also to confront the overall languishing economy. Nevertheless, the weekend, which also marks the end of the summer season for the studios, set a new record of $586.9 million, even though that figure was just 0.43 percent above last year's. Attendance was down 3.5 percent, however. Things are not expected to improve much next weekend. September is often the time of year when studios dump their least promising titles.

The top ten films for the four-day Labor Day weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Tropic Thunder, $14.3 million; 2. Babylon A.D., $12 million; 3. The Dark Knight, $11 million; 4. The House Bunny, $10.2 million; 5. Traitor, $10 million; 6. Death Race, $8.2 million; 7. Disaster Movie, $6.9 million; 8. Mamma Mia!, $5.8 million; 9. Pineapple Express, $4.5 million; 10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona, $3.5 million.

Weekend Box Office: The Labor Day Lull

2 September 2008 7:02 AM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

The most exciting news from Labor Day weekend at the box-office -- traditionally a slow period -- is that America seems to have caught on to the scam that Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have been running for... what is it now? Almost three years? (I'm not counting the Scary Movie franchise, which always retained some redeeming value despite their idiocy.) Anyway, their latest travesty, Disaster Movie, opened to $6.9 million over four days, just over a third of the (nearly identical to each other) first three-day weekends for Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans. Could that be the end of that?

Not that any of Disaster Movie's competitors did spectacularly better. The strongest of them -- the poorly-reviewed sci-fi flick Babylon A.D. -- only managed second place and a $12 million four-day. Don Cheadle's Traitor came in fifth with $10 million, which I actually think is robust for
