More reality and news magazine shows are likely to show up on network TV schedules sooner than expected as production companies announced Wednesday they were shutting down not only because of a dearth of fresh scripts but also because key talent and crew members were refusing to cross picket lines. The Associated Press reported today (Thursday) that filming stopped on NBC's The Office because star Steve Carell refused to cross the picket line. Julia Louis-Dreyfus told the wire service that production had also stopped on her CBS show, The New Adventures of Old Christine. A.P. said production on the following shows was also halting: Til Death, Rules of Engagement, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, and Back to You. Meanwhile, Fox announced Wednesday that rather than air a shortened version of its 24 series, it would not air the drama at all this season and hold already-completed episodes until next season. However, during a conference call to discuss the company's quarterly earnings, Peter Chernin, president and COO of Fox's corporate parent, News Corp, said that "a strike is probably a positive for the company." He noted that Fox airs more non-scripted and primetime animated shows than its competitors -- shows that are unaffected by the strike. "We would expect if anything that it would lift our market share and have us win this season by an even greater margin than we expect to," Chernin said.

Analysts pointed out that several shows last week got a boost as a result of college-age viewers being included in the Nielsen survey for the first time. ABC's Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, and What About Brian; NBC's Scrubs and The Office; Fox's Til Death; and CW's Gilmore Girls all saw huge leaps of 50 percent or more in their ratings for 18-49-year-olds. Fox is trying to breathe new life into the Brad Garrett series 'Til Death, which has languished in the ratings all season and has taken a drubbing from TV critics. Not only is it switching the series to Wednesdays after American Idol beginning in March (it also gets the post-Idol slot on February 27 and 28) but, according to TV Guide, Garrett has persuaded Ray Romano to make a guest appearance on an upcoming episode. Earlier this month, syndicated gossip columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith reported that Garrett and Romano are also planning a concert tour that will conclude in April with performances in Las Vegas.
