Meg Ryan has officially entered The First Wives Club chapter of her career. One year after starring as a spurned wife in the disappointing remake of The Women, she's the lead in Serious Moonlight, opposite Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell, and Justin Long. Hutton plays her cheating husband, and when she discovers his affair with Bell, she ties him to the toilet until he falls back in love with her. The film, due in December, is equally notable for its writer and director. The late Adrienne Shelly (Waitress) penned the script, and Curb Your Enthusiasm's Cheryl Hines receives her first directing credit. »

I’ve not seen Meg Ryan in a movie for a fair while now although I think she was most recently in The Women starring alongside Eva Mendes, Debra Messing and Jada Pinkett Smith. It seems ages since the glory days when she was an A-Lister and quite possibly the biggest actress in Hollywood. Her latest movie is called Serious Moonlight and has been released on Yahoo today. It also stars Timothy Hutton, Justin Long, Kristen Bell and is directed by Cheryl Hines.
After she arrives at her country home for a romantic weekend getaway, things don’t go exactly as planned for high-powered Manhattan lawyer Louise. First, her husband of 13 years, Ian, tells her that he’s leaving her for a younger woman. Then, one thing leads to another, and pretty soon Ian finds himself held captive by an oddly cool Louise who explains that she won’t release »

Making her directorial debut last year with The Women, Murphy Brown creator Diane English didn't exactly stun the world. So perhaps it makes sense that she's leaving chick flicks behind for her next project, and will adapt Paul Auster's novel Timbuktu for Lakeshore Entertainment. According to Variety English will write and direct the film, about a homeless man who sets out with his dog, Mr. Bones, to find his high school English teacher. Published in 1999, the book was called "cloying" in an Entertainment Weekly review, while according to Amazon, Kirkus Reviews called it "shockingly bad, especially for someone of Auster's stature." Not great news for English, who really ought to make a hit to prove that she deservse to handle features. But maybe she's got a trick up her sleeve we're just not seeing. Maybe? »

Paul Auster's Timbuktu has been picked up by Lakeshore Entertainment. The novel is told through the eyes of Mr Bones, a dog struggling to come to terms with the imminent death of his master, a homeless poet called Willy G. Christmas, with whom he embarks on a final journey. Despite being one of America's most prolific writers, Auster's books have largely been ignored by Hollywood, possibly because they rarely offer readily-adaptable, linear narratives While not one of his very best (check out New York Trilogy, a triptych of interlocking detective stories with a Hammett-esque flavour), Timbuktu is at once whimsical and pretty profound, and could make an interesting exception.Lakeshore, the production company most recently behind The Ugly Truth (boo!) and Crank: High Voltage (f#*king yay!), have the task of reshaping the quirky tale into something cinema-worthy. Having brought Chev Chelios back from the dead, it would seem nothing's beyond them. »

If you’re an aspiring screenwriter which, let’s face it, you may be, one way to break into the “business” is through a lab where you work with established mentors and advisers on honing your work and getting it in the hands of the right people. One of the most prestigious and famous of these labs is the one sponsored by Film Independent, a non-profit group dedicated to fostering and nurturing creativity that also produces the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Spirit Awards.
Today, they’ve announced a new group of writers who will participate in this year’s lab. Here’s all the info about the lucky 9 participants from the official press release.

First off, I love Jada Pinkett Smith.
I mean, please. She is nothing short of hot. And her portrayal of lesbian Alex Fisher was just about the only thing worth watching in The Women.
But her show, HawthoRNe, is not so hot.
I tried to love it, I really did. I want to support a series with a strong female lead, especially when that woman happens to be an over-40 woman of color. The fact that Smith is gorgeous is just a bonus.
Unfortunately, HawthoRNe just isn’t all that interesting. Maybe I’m unfairly comparing Smith’s Christina Hawthorne, chief nursing officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital, to Edie Falco’s Nurse Jackie. But Christina seems too valiant and heroic — too perfect. And that’s kind of boring.
Many critics share my opinion but, luckily for Smith and the rest of the HawthoRNe cast, TNT apparently does not. Today the »

Midway through Bride Wars there is a scene where a lone tear falls down Kate Hudson's cheek. That one tear tells a much larger story than all of Bride Wars.
In that one tear is Kate Hudson's career and it goes all the way back to Almost Famous, when William Miller told Penny Lane she had been sold to "Humble Pie for fifty bucks and a case of beer." A tear rolled down Hudson's cheek at that moment as well, and outside of Almost Famous and my moderate liking of How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days I imagine Kate Hudson looks back at a series of missteps and wonders how she went from an Oscar nominated actress in a Cameron Crowe film to a B-list actress performing alongside Dane Cook and following that up with what is likely to be Anne Hathaway's last career misstep »

Yesterday, when I read the headline "Lucy Lawless to star in Spartacus" on Variety.com, I just about did a spit-take with my morning coffee. I figured it was probably too good to be true, probably just an April Fool's Day joke (as they seem to be all the rage these days in the online world). Then I took the time to actually read the too-brief article itself.
Yes, Lucy Lawless will star in Spartacus: Blood and Sand, but not as Spartacus. Rather, she'll play a "proprietor of a camp for gladiators." Which is fine, as any Lawless casting news is good news as far as I'm concerned. In more good news, the "new fantasy-and-fighting series" will be helmed by Rob Tapert (Lawless's real-life husband) and Sam Raimi, the guys who brought us the series that made Lawless famous, Xena: Warrior Princess.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand will begin production in April, »

Hello and welcome to another dose of film fun Boxwishers. After the kick-ass action of Watchmen fortnight, we’re toning it down a bit this week. We’ve got four of the sunshine styles as worn by Jennifer Aniston in comedy/ drama Marley & Me that are just perfect for your summer wardrobe and all the gossip on how to get the sophisticated look of Julia Roberts and Clive Owen in saucy spy thriller Duplicity. But before all that, let’s check out some of the new DVD releases coming your way from today and it’s certainly a mixed bag of goodies certain to please all tastes. There’s period splendour, goofy comedy hijinks, non-stop chase action and fashionable women getting bitchy – what more could you ask for?

It’s news that probably won’t even register on Tom Hanks’s radar, but after poor reviews for last year’s The Women and little much else to write home about recently maybe Meg Ryan’s agent might be a little more psyched. What are we talking about? The news that the pair’s 1993 romance, Sleepless in Seattle is treading the increasingly well-worn path from screen to stage, with a musical version in the pipeline imaginatively entitled Sleepless in Seattle: The Musical. I just don’t know they come up with it!
Jeff Arch, who wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay to the original film is onboard, busily working on the script (or book as it’s known in stage circles) with composer/ lyricist Leslie Bricusse charged with adding the necessary songs. My Big Fat Greek Wedding helmer Joel Zwick is set to direct and the production will »

The night before the Academy Awards, another ceremony served as a worthy prelude. No, not the Spirit Awards — that show is far too classy. This awards show selected the worst of the worst for a Golden Raspberry Award. The big “winner” was a familiar, um, face.
Paris Hilton tied the record for the most awards, scoring worst actress for The Hottie and the Nottie, worst supporting actress for Repo! The Genetic Opera and worst on-screen couple for her pairing with either Christine Lakin or Joel David Moore in Hottie.
Sadly, I missed Hilton’s tours de farce, but the Razzie Awards have my respect based on her fellow nominees for worst supporting actress:
Carmen Electra — Disaster Move and Meet the Spartans
Kim Kardashian — Disaster Movie
Jenny McCarthy — Witless Protection
Leelee Sobieski — 88 Minutes and In the Name of the King
I saw 88 Minutes. It took me a week to get the smell out of my clothes. »

Mike Myers, Uwe Boll, and Paris Hilton swept almost every award at the 2009 Razzie Awards, the ceremony recognizing the worst in movies.
The voters selected The Love Guru as the absolute worst movie of last year, beating out a particularly awful category including M. Night Shyamalan’s latest waste of time, The Happening. Myers also “won” for screenplay and actor.
Paris Hilton’s three Razzies tied for most individual awards with last year’s Eddie Murphy sweep.
Uwe Boll received the award for career achievement since he’s never made a good movie ever. He also picked up a Razzie for “Worst Director.”

Jessica Alba and Diego Luna have been named the worst actors in the 2nd Annual Lazzie Awards by Latina.com for their apparent unimpressive performances on their films. Alba, 27, was awarded the shameful title for her roles in all her 2008 films: "The Love Guru," "Goodluck Chuck" and "The Eye." Luna, 29, was dishonored for his portrayal as a gay clingy boyfriend in "Milk."
Eva Mendes was also criticized for her stereotypical Latina performance in "The Women" for embodying the "ultimate negative image that Latinas have been fighting against for ages: a sex-crazed, man-eating, soulless spitfire."
And while co-star Penelope Cruz is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the Oscar Awards this Sunday, Javier Bardem and Scarlett Johansson have picked up an award at the Lazzies for the Ickiest Onscreen Chemistry in a Movie.

Michael Vartan will co-star opposite Jada Pinkett Smith in "Time Heals," an upcoming series from TNT which Sony TV are producing.Set to make its premiere later this year, the series focuses on a strong and caring nursing director in a North Carolina hospital. Vartan will play Tom Wakefield, the director of medicine at the hospital. Apparently, the colleagues care for each other, quite possibly more than just on a working basis. Pinkett Smith was last seen in "The Women" with Meg Ryan, Annette Bening and Eva Mendes. Vartan is in post-production for James B. Rogers "Demoted" starring Sean Astin and David Cross. »

The Oscars attempt (emphasis on the word, “attempt”) to recognize cinemas greatest achievements each year. The Razzies, on the other hand, recognize cinema’s greatest underachievements each year.
After seeing the nominees for this year’s Razzie Awards, I’m beginning to think that the Razzie judges need to be given jobs on the Oscar selection committee. Maybe then the Oscar noms would be a little bit more spot-on.
Here are the 2008 Razzie Award nominees for your viewing displeasure.
