Spears + Olsen Snubbed By Emmys

2 July 2008 3:04 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Britney Spears' acclaimed stint on U.S. sitcom How I Met Your Mother hasn't earned her an Emmy nod - she and Mary-Kate Olsen's guest TV spots won't be among those competing for gold.

Both stars have been left off the top 10 list of Emmy semifinalists in the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category.

Instead, Sarah Silverman is a favourite for her part as an obsessed stalker in Monk, alongside Oscar nominee Amy Ryan for her star turn in The Office.

Others on the list include Carrie Fisher and Edie Falco for 30 Rock, and Polly Bergen and Shirley Knight for Desperate Housewives guest spots.

The awards will be handed out on 6 September.

Website GoldDerby.com reveals that the other actresses vying to take home the award include America Ferrera, Tina Fey, Christina Applegate, Mary-Louise Parker, Sarah Silverman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Pushing Daisies star Anna Friel.

Also announced were the top ten stars who will compete in the Best Supporting Drama Actor category. Last year's winner Lost star Terry O'Quinn was missing from the list, which was led by his castmates Naveen Andrews and Michael Emerson.

Other actors to be shortlisted include William Shatner, Ted Danson and T.R. Knight. Also competing in the category are Christian Clemenson, Bruce Dern, Zeljko Ivanek, John Slattery, Blair Underwood and Jake Weber.

The awards will be handed out on 6 September.

Marcia Cross joins indie comedy ‘Peck’

26 June 2008 11:21 AM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Actress Marcia Cross, who’s been playing Bree Van De Kamp on TV’s “Desperate Housewives” for the past four years, will appear in Michael Nickles’ upcoming indie comedy “Peck,” according to Variety.

Although we don’t have that many details about the plot, the film centers on a high school kid who’s struggling with his parents’ incredible strictness and develops an unlikely friendship with the school’s most popular girl.

Keir Gilchrist, Adam Arkin and Brie Larson co-star. Cross jumps into the role of the high schooler’s mother.

Nickles is directing a script by Marc Arneson. Filming is already under way and should wrap this or next week.

Playing a strict mother is nothing new for Marcia Cross, and I’m she can pull this off without major difficulties. Let’s just hope she doesn’t have to play yet another desperate housewife.

Lyne Leaves Martha Stewart

12 June 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Susan Lyne, who became CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia shortly after she was fired as president of ABC Entertainment in 2004 -- and at about the same time that Stewart herself was heading for prison -- has resigned from Mslo. Lyne, who was ousted by ABC's owners, the Walt Disney Co. in 2004, just weeks before two shows that she had championed, Desperate Housewives and Lost, became huge hits, gave no reason for her decision to step down, saying in a statement only that when she took the job, her "principal goal was to rebuild the company and return it to profitability. We have done that." Nevertheless any such remedies have not been reflected in the company's stock, which reached a high of about $37 in early 2005 but are now worth about $7.50.

Longoria Parker 'Not Pregnant'

12 June 2008 9:03 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Eva Longoria Parker's stylist has laughed off fresh rumours the Desperate Housewives actress is pregnant - insisting if she was with child, it would show in the size of her breasts.

The Latina beauty married French basketball star Tony Parker last July and the couple has been plagued by reports they are expecting ever since.

The latest rumours were sparked on Monday after Longoria Parker, who was wearing a loose-fitting dress, was snapped shopping in New York City's Ferragamo boutique - with store employees appearing to point at her belly.

But stylist Robert Verdi, who had accompanied the actress on her shopping trip, is adamant the star is not about to become a first-time mum.

He tells People.com, "I'm not her gynaecologist, but I am her stylist. I see her naked. I see her boobs! That's the first place it would show, and it's not showing!"

And he admits the photos are hilarious because it couldn't be further from the truth: "Eva was holding a handbag that she bought in the crook of her arm.

"The manager came over and said to her, 'I love that bag.' But in the photos, it looks like the woman is gesturing to her midsection. It's too funny."

Beckinsale Denies Longoria Parker Rivalry

7 June 2008 7:28 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Kate Beckinsale has laughed off reports of a rivalry with Eva Longoria Parker - insisting her fellow actress is too "tiny" to be her competition.

Beckinsale has spent a lot of time with Desperate Housewives star Longoria Parker since moving to Los Angeles, sparking speculation the pair befriended one another to further their acting careers.

But the Underworld star insists she doesn't regard the Texan beauty as a rival - because their dissimilar physiques prevent them from competing for film roles.

She says, "How could Eva and I be up for the same parts? She's tiny and I'm fascinated by little people.

"Having said that, I feel like a giant. I've always felt a clunky girl. I could ski home on my feet."

Nielsen Writes Season Finale

23 May 2008 6:55 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Nielsen closed the books on the 2007-08 broadcast season Wednesday by releasing a list showing how each of the major networks' regular programs fared. Not surprisingly, the top of the list was dominated by the two weekly American Idol telecasts on Fox and the weekly Dancing With the Stars telecasts on ABC that aired on four different nights during the season. Four scripted shows also made it into the top ten: Abc's Desperate Housewives at No. 6; Fox's House at No. 8; Cbs's Csi: Crime Scene Investigation at No. 9; and Grey's Anatomy at Number 10. Overall, Fox wound up as the top-rated network for the season, thanks mostly to its American Idol numbers, which averaged 28.75 million on Tuesday nights (No. 1) and 27.78 million on Wednesdays (No. 2). CBS slipped to second place after holding the top spot for the previous five years. Fox was also the only network to improve its ratings this year compared with last year. "What catapulted them is probably that they were the least harmed from the writers strike,'' Brad Adgate, research director at Horizon Media told Bloomberg News. "They had a lot of unscripted shows that were not as impacted, like American Idol.
