New International Trailer for 'Tropic Thunder'

8 July 2008 9:26 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The summer of Robert Downey Jr. is halfway over, with Iron Man fading into the ether at the box office, but soon enough, he'll be everywhere again in support of his new comedy, Tropic Thunder. I've never spoken to Ben Stiller so I don't have any idea what his personality is like (some comedians, you know, are real jackasses), but I wonder if he's Ok with all the attention being on Downey. After all, Stiller's technically the lead and it's a movie he wrote and directed. Nobody cares about that, though; they just want to see Iron Man in blackface.

Well, we get to see a little bit more of that - although what's most revealing is the pre-surgery Kirk Lazarus - in the new international trailer for Tropic Thunder.

I wish they'd kept Danny McBride's pantsuit line in this one. Oh well. Seek it out if you haven't heard it.

Hancock Has Super Debut

3 July 2008 10:37 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Sony's Hancock showed the strength of a superhero in its debut on Tuesday, grossing $6.8 million during two screenings in 3,680 theaters. (It adds 280 more this weekend.) While the preview screenings took in more than an earlier superhero movie, Iron Man, in May ($5.5 million), it fell well below last year's previews of Transformers ($8.8 million), which set the stage for a Fourth of July holiday haul of $155.4 million. Box-office forecasters are predicting that Hancock should wind up with $100-120 million through Sunday. However, many analysts are waiting to see how word-of-mouth will affect the film. Reviews of the film were mostly negative, and if audiences react the way the critics did, ticket sales could drop by Sunday. Meanwhile, Disney-Pixar's Wall-E continued to pick up steam, actually earning more than Hancock on Tuesday ($7.6 million), and although it played throughout the day, a large percentage of its tickets were sold at discounted children's prices.

Dances With The Arthouse: A Summer Vacation to 'Berlin' and the Best Josh Brolin Movies of 2008

2 July 2008 6:12 AM, PDT | From fantasymoguls.com | See recent Fantasy Moguls news

Greetings, everyone. Here comes the wandering column interested in taking the temperature of arthouse film releases. Well, if there's no doubt my colleague Shrykespeare is in the middle of a season where every week brings its "columning challenge" (Iron Man! Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! The Dark Knight!), the story is different for your humble host, as I have to dig deeply to find, once in a while, an independent film taking a chance at confronting the summer blockbusters. But this is how it is. When the heat of summer is weighing on your shoulders, finding shelter in a climate-controlled movie theater to spend two hours watching something big, something light, something fun, is an easy and sometimes pleasant thing to do.

Showbiz Stock Watch: Paramount Will Be 2008's No. 1 Studio, but Who Will Finish With Second-Best Market Share?

1 July 2008 11:12 PM, PDT | From fantasymoguls.com | See recent Fantasy Moguls news

July 1 marks the halfway point of the moviegoing year, and there is a clear winner among the major Hollywood studios. With the three highest-grossing movies of 2008 so far under its belt, Paramount is riding high. Both Marvel's Iron Man and Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull are now $300 million movies, and DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda is at $181 million already, and a cinch to eclipse the $200 million mark. When it happens, the Melrose Avenue gang will become the first studio in history to put out back-to-back-to-back $200 million movies.

Hancock

1 July 2008 2:16 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

From the moment Hancock first introduces Will Smith as a drunken, glowering, foul-mouthed superhero, it seems clear that he's eventually going to rehabilitate himself into the charming version of Will Smith, the one who became famous on the strength of wisecracks and a famously infectious grin. The movie telegraphs that change in the trailer and even in the first half-hour of action, as Smith's hostile hero—who frequently causes millions of dollars in damages while sloppily foiling crimes in Los Angeles—meets PR man Jason Bateman, who offers him a major public-image makeover. But the obvious never happens. Instead, Hancock takes off at right angles, essentially turning into M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable, as seen through the big action lens of modern superhero movies like Iron Man and the Spider-Man series. Like Shyamalan's movies, Hancock leans clumsily on a twisted, complicated mythology that's revealed in awkward chunks just in time to become.

Get Smart Takes It To The Max

24 June 2008 10:40 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Get Smart, starring Steve Carell as title character Maxwell Smart, took in $38.68 million over the weekend, well above estimates by box-office predictors and Warner Bros., the studio that released it, according to final figures released Monday by Media by Numbers. The only other film to open wide, Paramount's The Love Guru, starring Mike Myers, found little love among moviegoers as it debuted in fourth place with just $13.91 million. Meanwhile, the second week of Universal's The Incredible Hulk slipped to second place with $22.14 million, while Kung Fu Panda, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount, brought in $21.93 million in its third week. Meanwhile, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull returned to the top of the international box office for the third week with $25 million. The film has now taken in $392 million overseas versus $291 million at home. The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Get Smart, Warner Bros., $38,683,480, (New); 2. ‘Disaster Movie’ trailer appears on the Web

24 June 2008 7:38 AM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Our quick thoughts: Do the names Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer ring a bell? Yep, they’re the untalented makers of the “Scary Movie” series, “Date Movie,” “Epic Movie” and “Meet the Spartans,” and on Aug. 29, 2008, they will return to the big screen with “Disaster Movie,” yet another ridiculous spoof comedy that will likely earn the title of worst film of the year.

This time, the plot (can you call it a plot, really?) centers on a group of immature youngsters struggling with a series of catastrophic events. As you can see in this lame trailer, the film spoofs “Iron Man,” “Sex and the City,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “Juno,” among many others.

Check out the trailer above and feel free to share your thoughts on this flick or on past spoof comedies. I personally think “Disaster Movie” is going to suck just as much as its insulting predecessors.

Get Smart Looks Smart With $39.2 Million

23 June 2008 10:28 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Would you believe that Warner Bros.' Get Smart, starring Steve Carell, took in an estimated $39.2 million at the box office over the weekend? That was about $10 million more than what most box-office forecasters had predicted. On the other hand, Paramount's The Love Guru, starring Mike Myers, took in just $14 million, about $10 million less than what forecasters had predicted. Two holdover films were almost too close to call. Paramount said that the DreamWorks' Animation-produced Kung Fu Panda took in $21.7 million, while Universal claimed that The Incredible Hulk took in $21.6 million. While box-office trackers Media by Numbers listed them as the No. 2 and No. 3 film in its top-ten chart, their positions could change when final figures are released later today (Monday). Overall, the top 12 movies took in about $136.9 million, up 10 percent over the comparable weekend a year ago. The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Get Smart, $39.2 million; 2. Kung Fu Panda, $21.7 million; 3. The Incredible Hulk, $21.6 million; 4. The Love Guru, $14 million; 5. The Happening, $10 million; 6. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $8.4 million; 7. You Don't Mess With the Zohan, $7.2 million; 8. Sex and the City, $6.5 million; 9. Iron Man, $4 million; 10. The Strangers, $1.9 million.

Hollywood Mourns Special-Effects Star Winston

23 June 2008 5:05 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Stars including Sigourney Weaver, Jon Favreau, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Steven Spielberg gathered at the funeral of special effects guru Stan Winston, following his death from cancer.

The Oscar-winning visual effects artist died at his home in Malibu, California on 15 June, aged 62.

Winston won Oscars for his work in Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Jurassic Park.

He also created notable visual effects for hit films including Predator, Edward Scissorhands and Batman Returns.

His most recent work can be seen in summer blockbusters Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Friends, relatives and showbusiness associates all gathered to pay their respects to Winston at a memorial service on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Legendary director Spielberg led the afternoon's tributes, telling the gathering, "What Stan did is that he took our dreams - he took all of our dreams - and he blended them with his own dreams.

"He then workshopped those dreams with pencil, clay and later years on the computer. He would basically give life to all of our ideas. He would make them come to life."

Showbiz Stock Watch: Despite Mike Myers's Underperforming 'The Love Guru,' Paramount Likely Surpasses $1 Billion in Domestic Sales in Record Time!

22 June 2008 10:20 PM, PDT | From fantasymoguls.com | See recent Fantasy Moguls news

Last weekend, Paramount Pictures International confirmed that it blew past the $1 billion mark in international sales for 2008, reaching that benchmark six weeks faster than in 2007. Now, based on this weekend's estimates (June 20-22), it appears that Paramount has surpassed $1 billion in domestic ticket sales as well. Despite the failure of Mike Myers's The Love Guru, which managed only an estimated $14 million this weekend, DreamWorks's Kung Fu Panda added a likely $21.7 million, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull generated about $8.4 million and Iron Man picked up another $4 million. That should be just enough to push the Melrose Avenue gang past the billion dollar mark.

It’s been a good year so far for Robert Downey Jr., and now the “Iron Man” actor has been selected as one of 25 artists to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.

Not only is Downey Jr. starring in the first ’08 summer blockbuster to top the $300 million mark, but he also has two other projects coming up this year. On Aug. 15, 2008, he will be seen in Ben Stiller’s action comedy “Tropic Thunder,” and later this year, he will star opposite Jamie Foxx in Joe Wright’s drama “The Soloist.”

According to Digital Spy, Ralph Fiennes, Sir Ben Kingsley, Hugh Jackman, Cameron Diaz, Tim Burton, Shakira and Felicity Huffman are also on the list of recipients.

The stars will be unveiled some time in 2009. Downey Jr. delivered some awesome performances over the past years, and he certainly deserves his star on Hollywood’s most famous sidewalk.

'Iron Man' Breaks $300 Million Barrier

19 June 2008 6:07 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

It took 48 days for Iron Man to become the first $300 million earning film released in 2008. The Marvel superhero movie, released May 2nd, crossed over into Movie Valhalla on June 18th, according to numbers released by Box Office Mojo. In so doing, Iron Man becomes just the 27th movie to make $300 million or more in the U.S., and is the 15th fastest to get there.

Its 48 days beat Finding Nemo and the first Harry Potter movie (51 and 52 days, respectively), but fell short of the 44-day mark established by Titanic and the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Titanic, of course, is the highest-grossing film of all time, and in terms of domestic receipts, it made another $300 million after its first 44 days.

The all-time $300 million land speed record is held by the second Pirates flick, At World's End, which made it to the finish line in a dizzying 16 days. If you're a little slow,

TiVo Users Don't Skip Movie Ads

Commercials for new movies are the least likely to be skipped by users of TiVo digital video recorders, according to a study by the DVR maker. The study, conducted in April, found that the least fast-forwarded (and most-watched) ad was for Universal's comedy film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which aired during NBC's The Office. (The episode itself, however, did not even make TiVo's list of the ten most-watched shows.) The second least fast-forwarded ad was for Sony Pictures' Hancock which aired during an episode of ABC's Grey's Anatomy. Other movies making the top-ten list included Sony's Made of Honor (#4), Universal's Baby Mama (#7), and Paramount/Marvel's Iron Man (#10).
