I liked Mr. Deeds. It's a good if not great film. Some people may feel that it does a real dis-service to the 1930's original, but I think that's often what you get when you update stories for modern audiences.
Adam Sandler plays Deeds, a modest, well-liked pizzeria owner in a small town in New Hampshire. He learns that his great-uncle, who recently perished atop a mountain peak, was an enormously rich man (thanks to a media empire), and has left Deeds a large portion of his estate. Soon, Deeds is falling for a pretty tabloid show producer (Winona Ryder) who is masquerading as a school nurse in order to worm her way into Deeds' life. He also has to deal with a greedy WASP yuppie (Peter Gallagher), who (this is such a cliche) who wants to get his greedy mitts on the majority of the company's shares.
At times this movie lapses into typical crude Adam Sandler material, but it's also so endearing at times (Sandler's character is pretty likable, although in typical Sandler fashion, he also has a "wicked" temper at times), that I think it's better than his usual output.
Ryder is also appealing, and keep an eye on John Turturro. His supporting performance is hilarious.
As usual, some of Sandler's cohorts (Allen Covert, Peter Dante, Steve Buscemi, et al.) have roles in the picture.
Definitely above-average for Adam Sandler.
