A Japanese film about a Buddhist mortician is set to be an unlikely commercial success
There aren't many films about the Japanese art of corpse beautification. Still fewer made by a director who previously specialised in soft-core porn and starring an ex-boy band heart-throb. But Departures (Okuribito), which opens in Britain on Friday, is all these things. It won this year's best foreign language Oscar, beating two critically feted films, Waltz with Bashir and The Class.
But why? The film, after all, is hardly a Saturday night no-brainer. Loosely adapted from Aoki Simmons's autobiography Coffinman: The Journal of a Buddhist Mortician, it's about a redundant cellist who finds meaning in his life when he gets a job ceremonially washing bodies, preparing them for entry into the next life. Even in Japan, where films about death and funerals are not uncommon (see Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece Ikiru), the role of the »

Chicago – Just in time for holiday shopping, HBO has released both seasons of the epic “Rome” in one gorgeously-packaged Blu-Ray set with all 22 episodes and bonus material including audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Whatever you may think of the show, “Rome” was one of the most beautifully designed programs of the decade and a perfect fit for 1080p.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
The winner of seven Emmy Awards takes place four hundred years after the founding of the Republic. Rome is brought vividly to life as an allegory for power struggles in any era. In the show, the days of shared power has come to an end and everyone is fighting for their part of the new structure - it’s the perfect backdrop for betrayal, excess, and corruption.
Blending historical figures like Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, and Cleopatra with their own narratives, “Rome” was a gorgeous blend of style and substance. »

Chicago – Ben Foster has stolen scenes in works as diverse as “Six Feet Under,” “Freaks and Geeks,” “3:10 to Yuma,” and “Alpha Dog,” but he truly shines in the spotlight of the lead role in “The Messenger,” giving the best performance of his career to date. The young actor was in town for the Chicago International Film Festival and took some time to speak to us about his research for the film, how one leaves such a dramatic work behind, and his love for co-star Woody Harrelson.
Foster stars in “The Messenger” as Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery, a young man returned home from his tour but with a few months of service left. To fill out his time, Will is assigned to the Casualty Notification Office (and partnered with Woody Harrelson’s Captain Tony Stone), the men who inform “Nok” (next of kin) when their loved one has been killed in the line of duty. »

Justin Theroux's second-act career as a screenwriter has been incredibly entertaining to watch, both because you never expect that actors are paying enough attention on set to go behind the scenes, and hey, every time Variety runs a picture of him, it's never a bad thing. Theroux, once an actor known for roles on Six Feet Under and Charlie's Angels, parlayed his writing work on Tropic Thunder into a gig on Iron Man 2, and now the screenplay jobs just keep rolling in. According to THR, Fox has hired Theroux to write another draft of Space Invader, which is blessedly not an adaptation of the classic arcade game. Instead it's being described as an "astronaut romantic comedy," with Will Arnett attached to play a man who travels to space when he suspects his astronaut girlfriend is cheating on him with another Nasa guy. I really like everything I'm reading about this, »

In the four years since she turned the brooding bohemian Claire Fisher of HBO's Six Feet Under into a hipster icon, Lauren Ambrose has been prolific on stage (as Juliet and Ophelia in two seasons at The Public Theater's Shakespeare In The Park, and more recently on Broadway with Ionesco's Exit The King) and on the big screen (Cold Souls, Where The Wild Things Are). But, this Sunday, with a group of musicians from the Blue Ribbon Boys, The Two Man Gentlemen Band, and other Berkshires-based players she's been jamming with for the past month, the operatically-trained Ambrose will make her NYC singing debut at Joe's Pub as Lauren Ambrose & The Leisure Class. "We'll play standards and covers of rock 'n roll songs in our style," says Ambrose, meaning Ragtime, Louis Armstrong-style jazz. If you can score a ticket to the already sold out show, be sure to listen »

Few young actors are blessed with wildly eclectic bodies of work, but 29-year-old Ben Foster has utilized his trademark intensity to play a bisexual art-school student (TV's "Six Feet Under"), a drug-addicted hoodlum ("Alpha Dog"), a winged superhero ("X-Men: The Last Stand"), a Wild West sociopath ("3:10 to Yuma") and a wannabe vampire who steals the show in "30 Days of Night." In his juiciest role to date, the Boston-born actor stars in "I'm Not There" screenwriter Oren Moverman's terrific directorial debut, "The Messenger." Foster plays Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery, a jaded Army vet who has just returned to the homefront after being wounded in Iraq.
Paired up with the hard-nosed Captain Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson), Will is assigned to be a Casualty Notification Officer, a job that, in its own way, may be more difficult than combat. It's an emotionally authentic story of friendship and coping with unexpected jolts of humor, »

Honestly, the reason why I've gone through the first season of The Big Bang Theory is because an old friend of mine (who studies for a Major in Atmospheric Science and a Minor in Environment) recommended it to me. With that said, I got to admit that the show is likable despite a few plot holes.
Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Hofstadter), an experimental physicist, and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), a theoretical physicist, are two Caltech prodigies in their twenties. Besides, they share the same apartment. One day, Penny (Kaley Cuoco), an attractive blonde with showbiz ambition who works at a Cheesecake Factory restaurant, moves in the apartment across the hall from Leonard's and Sheldon's apartment. Unlike Sheldon, who seriously lacks social skills, Leonard manages to develop a friendship between Penny and him. However, Leonard has a crush on Penny.
Obviously, The Big Bang Theory doesn't reinvent the wheel of sitcoms. This »

Chicago – Many editions of the DVD Round-Up have featured a different genre and focus for each title within it. This week seems a little more thematically linked as we have a trio of foreign horror films and a few more independent films than usual. Of course, there has to a holiday comedy to spice things up.
Consider this column informational with synopsis, tech specs, and special features info for titles that might go otherwise unnoticed, but if you’re looking for more critical opinion, we covered “Sauna” when it played at the EU Film Fest, “Medicine For Melancholy” when it was available on IFC Direct, and “Nothing Like the Holidays” when it played in theaters.

One of our fave TV shows is hitting DVD in the UK this week, the superb Us TV show True Blood.

A sensation in the Us, winning a Golden Globe in its first season (Anna Paquin, Best Actress) True Blood has already made its (fang)marks on the flesh of British viewers pulling in huge viewers on FX and threatening to glamour even more when it makes its terrestrial debut on Channel 4 in October. Feeding our fascination for vampires, Alan Ball looks at a lascivious world occupied by the dead in the »

Where There's Smoke There's Arcade Fire
On the night of September 20, 2007 - my producing partner Sean McKittrick and I went to see the now legendary Arcade Fire show at the Hollywood Bowl. Finally Sam Raimi gets back to what he does best. A damn good splatter-fest that is as funny as it is scary. Alison Lohman turns in a brilliant performance as Christine Brown, a normal young woman who works at an L.A. loan company. After she refuses the mysterious Mrs Ganush an extension on her loan to impress her boss she finds herself on the receiving end of a very nasty curse that transforms her life quite literally into a living hell. Asking for help from a psychic to reverse the curse Christine finds herself in a race against time and in the end she has to choose exactly how far she is prepared to go in order to break the spell.
