Little-known actor Reeve Carney has landed Broadway's most-anticipated new role - as Spider-man.
The young star, who also fronts rockers Carney, has beaten thousands of hopefuls to land the role of Peter Parker and his superhero alter-ego in mega-budget musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.
He'll join Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming, who have already signed on for Julie Taymor's ambitious project, which has been scored by U2 stars Bono and The Edge.
Carney's biggest role to date came in 1999 film Snow Falling on Cedars, in which he played Ethan Hawke's character Ishmael as a child.
Director Taymor asked the 26 year old to try out for Spider-Man after impressing her on the set of her new film The Tempest.
The Spider-Man musical will open at the Hilton Theatre in New York next spring. A set date for the run has yet to be announced. »

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (at left); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because »

Sin City producer Stephen L'Heureux's Solipsist Films has acquired the rights to Ed Laroche's graphic novel Almighty.
According to Mania, Black Hawk Down screenwriter Ken Nolan is attached to write the script and potential directors are being approached.
Created, written and drawn by Laroche, Almighty takes place in 2098 and follows a female motorcycling mercenary called Fale, who is hired to rescue a girl and bring her home across a third world America - "a fractured landscape of segregated zones driven by neo-tribalism."
Laroche said: "At its heart Almighty is a pursuit story. As the story unfolds there are other things that are attached to it but at the core of it, a girl has been kidnapped and someone has hired a killer to find her and bring her home." The official website for Almighty is here.
Mania adds that Solipsist has also picked up screen rights on two other titles. »

In recent weeks, there’s been some chatter as to what characters, or more specifically, villains, we will see in the upcoming fourth installment to the Spider-Man franchise.
First, we heard arguably crazy speculation that Bruce Campbell’s larger role in Spider-Man 4 would see him playing a villain such as Mysterio. Unlikely in the eyes of many fans, but we followed that up with a report on director Sam Raimi discussing the Spider-Man 4 villains where he admitted he favored the idea of The Lizard but wasn’t keen or familiar with the idea of Carnage.
Then, we finally got one confirmation on the topic of potential villains: Dylan Baker would in fact be returning as Dr. Curt Connors in the next movie but that didn’t necessarily mean he’d be transforming in the scaly green two-armed lizard, especially not if you can take Baker’s words as »

Before there was Spider-Man, Sam Raimi began his multi-billion dollar career with little more than $375,000 and a script for a schlocky X-rated horror film. But when Evil Dead was released in 1981, its gore and wit garnered it a cult following, amassing box office earnings of $2.4 million in the U.S. and over $29 million worldwide. Its success led to several sequels, a stage musical, and cult fame for its writer-director and its star, Bruce Campbell.... »

Rumor has it, Julianne Moore will land a role as a new love interest of Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy in "30 Rock". According to E! Online, the actress meets all criteria to be the perfect partner of the network executive as she is "age-appropriate, hot, funny and lives in New York." However, Julianne's representative refused to deny or confirm the news and just stated, "You would need to contact NBC for an official answer."
Previously, Alec has given a hint about who will be his new on-screen lover, telling E! Online "I won't say who it is, but someone very near to us who may be coming on to play my girlfriend for four episodes." Unfortunately, NBC has remained mum when asked who will play the character.
In related news, James Franco has been reported joining "30 Rock". According to Entertainment Weekly, a source has confirmed that the "Spider-Man" actor will »

Guilty pleasures come in all forms. A few quickly spring to my slightly demented mind: s'mores, Bo Derek movies, Debbie Gibson (she's from my hometown and the girl can still sing), muffin tops, Xanadu. And these days, my television guilty pleasure is Legend of the Seeker, the campy, cheesetastic fantasy souffle from Spider-Man auteur Sam Raimi and his longtime creative partner, Rob Tapert. Together, these guys have given us such delicious TV junk food as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, Cleopatra 2525 and more, and Legend of the Seeker is right up there with the best of 'em. The show is based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth books, and it follows Richard (Craig Horner), who's destined be the titular heroic Seeker; Kahlan (Bridget Regan), a bewitching, butt-kicking Confessor and Richard's would-be great love; and Zedd (Bruce Spence), an eccentric and powerful wizard who accompanies Kahlan and Richard on their adventures. »

News broke a while ago that James Franco was going to be making a guest appearance on the long-running soap opera, General Hospital. I found this fun, because I watch Gh (stop making fun of me…..I like some soaps). Apparently Franco had asked to appear on Gh to experience the demanding shoot schedule of soap actors. I have a lot of respect for them. Do you know how difficult it would be to learn your lines and film for a show that airs every single day?
Franco will first appear in Port Charles on November 20 and will be some sort of nemesis of Jason Morgan.
Franco will also be appearing in 30 Rock. This guy is all over the map, but I like this move. Because it tells me two things: (1) Franco has range, which is always nice in an actor, and (2) he's not too prissy to appear on television, »

We’ve seen a lot of origin stories in the past few years – Wolverine just came out this summer, Magneto may or may not be happening, there is always Superman and of course Batman’s origin has been told several times. Heck, The Hobbit can even be considered an origin story. Ghost Rider was unfortunately given an origin movie that dated back to the old west. I’m a huge fan of Tremors and the 4th movie went back to the old west as well, for an origin story about the subterranean monster worm.
So I understand why studios and copyright holders want to make origin movies on comic book characters and even monsters, but I cannot for the life of me figure out this latest news coming from “wrastlin” news site Lords of Pain. WWE, in a bid to capitalize on one of their brands, is in the process »

Performance artist James Franco will follow up his General Hospital arc as a monochromatic Port Charles stranger with a guest appearance on 30 Rock. In the episode, which begins production this week, Franco is lured into an agent-engineered fauxmance with Jenna (Jane Krakowski). While there is a 25 percent chance that the Milk actor will be nominated for a Guest Actor Emmy even if he is wheeled around Studio 6H unconscious in a Spider-Man mask, let's hope he has more scenery to chew than last week's guest star Betty White. Wouldn't you love to know who's giving actor James Franco career advice these days? I'm not knocking him or her, but I'd love to figure out the strategy. Or maybe this is just Franco being Franco (like Manny being Manny, for you baseball fans out there)?
James has just started filming his two-month arc on General Hospital -- check out the first pic (right) -- and now Michael Ausiello reports that James Franco will do a guest spot on 30 Rock.
How's that for a career trajectory -- from box office bonanza (Spider-Man) to Oscar feature (Milk) to daytime soap (General Hospital) to Emmy-winning sitcom (30 Rock). He's like a human pinball machine looking for a perfect score!

Even though Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin died in the first Spider-Man flick, the actor behind the mask, Willem Dafoe, managed to re-appear in both the second and third film in the series, through the diluted mind of Osborn Jr. But Harry Osborn (who was played by James Franco) died in the third movie, so that should supposedly be the end of the Osborns, right? Well, that might not be the case after all, at least not if Dafoe has anything to say about the matter, as he isn't opposed to re-appearing in the fourth flick, though he has yet to receive a call. "Let's put it this way — no one's called," Dafoe tells MTV News [1] when asked whether or not he will make a return. "I think it's possible, but I haven't heard anything." So how could it be possible? Perhaps The Green Goblin didn't die after all in the first movie, »

In the early '80s, an unknown director (Sam Raimi) took a miniscule budget and crafted what would become the cult horror-comedy The Evil Dead. That movie is still fun to watch today for its ingenuity and its ability to juggle both straight horror elements and hilarious satire. But the gruesome dismemberments and multi-colored bodily fluids (not to mention a very disturbing, not-so-subtly-suggestive use of tree limbs) were enough to earn the movie an X rating (changed to an Nc-17 when the X rating was laid to rest in the early '90s).
Raimi has of course reached stratospheric heights since then, crafting two larger-budget sequels and helming the massively successful Spider-Man franchise. Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell went on to relative fame as a cult-movie icon, using his leading-man looks and his impeccable timing to forge a career out of schlocky comedy genre-hybrids, such as Bubba Ho-Tep and the »

You've probably heard the news about Spider-Man star James Franco joining the cast of General Hospital for some time now. As ridiculous as it sounds, we're here to tell you that this is not an elaborate hoax and we even have his soap debut photo to prove it!
Franco is slated to appear on the long-running ABC daytime series for two months beginning November 20, which coincides with November sweeps. Without doubt, Franco's addition is expected to bring in more viewers to General Hospital, which is struggling to keep ratings high these days.

Dylan Baker is returning for the upcoming Spider-Man 4 to possibly play the Lizard, but what about Willem Dafoe?
Dafoe played the Green Goblin in Spider-Man and then re-appeared, despite his character's death, in both sequels. With James Franco, who played Dafoe's son Harry Osborn, dying in Spider-Man 3, is there still a way for Dafoe to show up in Spider-Man 4? Dafoe told MTV that anything's "possible."
I think it's possible. But I haven't heard anything. Let's put it this way — no one's called.
How's that for leaving things open?

Tobey Maguire told The La Times that the intensity of working on his latest movie, the family drama Brothers, had such an effect that he "lost a lot of joy" while working on it.
I wasn't even aware of it. I don't mean it to sound goofy or artsy or something, but two days before we wrapped, I started telling some jokes and laughing, whatever, and it was like a release for me. I hadn't done that in, like, two months.
Brothers follows a military wife (Natalie Portman) who is told that her husband (Maguire) has died in Afghanistan. Grieving, she finds solace with her husband's brother (Jake Gyllenhaal) until her husband suddenly arrives home. The role is a real change of pace for the Spider-Man actor, who was pleased to shed some light on the real problems that soldiers face.

From Splash Page: We recently brought you the news that Dylan Baker will reprise his role as Dr. Curt Connors in "Spider-Man 4," heralding some hope that The Lizard could finally make his long-awaited debut as Peter Parker's newest nemesis. But let's not forget some of Spidey's other contenders, like the Green Goblin.
While the villain might thrive on the bright lights of Broadway courtesy of Alan Cumming, original Green Goblin actor Willem Dafoe's future involvement in the Sam Raimi-directed franchise isn't exactly a certainty—in fact, Dafoe himself still doesn't know whether he'll appear in future "Spider-Man" movies.

At the end of the day, we're not sure there's even a story here, because if there is, it strikes us a story about nothing. Here's how it goes: MTV speaks to Willem Dafoe. Dafoe acknowledges that his return to the 'Spider-Man' franchise as Green Goblin "isn't exactly a certainty" (when was it ever even under consideration?). Then Dafoe remarks that he "think(s) it's possible."
Sure, flying cars are possible, too...but no-one expects them anytime soon, if ever.
Dafoe's return to the franchise is problematic, chiefly because of his character's death in the first Spider-Man. And while Dafoe has reprised the role in the two subsequent outings as a mirror-bound apparition seen by his son, Harry...with Harry dead as well, there's no realistic way to resurrect the Goblin—assuming Raimi even wanted to in the first place.
"I think it's possible," Dafoe told MTV, adding, »
