I've been re-watching the early series of SG-1 and I just realised how much better it used to be. I've spotted several changes that writers must have made, here are a few I noticed.
1. They lost patience while writing stories i.e. when they first had a storyline running i.e. the Tollan they paced it out, they were in four episodes in five series 1,3,4 and 5, but when in the later series i.e. the Sodan they threw them all into the ninth series and then killed the all.
2. They began breaking their own 'scientific laws.' Each sci-fi has its own laws of what is possible and in series 9 and 10 they began ignoring them i.e. transport rings, we saw several times that they had to be linked to the receiving rings in order to pass through the ships shield, but in a few episodes we saw people pass through shields without any trouble at all. Also the Ori Supergate makes no sense, if it is near a black hole how come it is not pulled into it? As well Vala somehow traveled through the black hole to the Ori galaxy, if this is possible why do the Ori need a Supergate?
3. The comedy of SG-1 was always just subtle and there to show a bond between the team but with the episode 'Insiders' all the Ba'al jokes were too much and Nerus ruined the image of the Goa'uld, as he contradicts the entire first 8 years.
4. Daniel Jackson changed. Michael Shanks initially left the series because he thought Daniel was becoming just another gun toting character and wasn't the moral centre of SG-1 anymore, but he is now carrying a P-90 fighting as much as the rest of SG-1 while in the past he only had a 9mm and only really fought when necessary.
5. Lack of 'stand alone episode' SG-1 was full episodes about new planets and new cultures, we saw these as seperate from the main arc of the Goa'uld and looking back I see how little they appeared in the early years. Now every new culture is somehow linked to fighting the Ori or is a Lucian Alliance with Ba'al appearing a few times.
6. Returning to used up ideas. SG-1 did its alternate universe stories in series 1 and 3, which were good stories but the episodes in series 9 and 10 just looked weak.
