Live From Tiff 2009: T Minus 2: Get Low & Soul Kitchen

8 September 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- T minus two. Nothing to report on, except I ran into a pair of poster one sheets of films I'll be covering that obviously caught my eye. The first we have the one sheet for (a smaller, clearer version of it can be found on IMDb) Aaron Schneider's feature length film debut. A cinematographer by trade, Schneider's last short actually won him the Oscar and this lifts from the short. Written by Chris Provenzano, C. Gaby Mitchell and Scott Seeke, Get Low is based on the winning short Two Soldiers and based on the true story of Felix "Bush" Breazeale. Set in the depression-era 1930s Tennessee, when a man with a shady past (Robert Duvall) tries to find redemption through witnessing his own funeral as part of a funeral home’s promotional stunt. Sissy Spacek plays a woman from his past and Bill Murray makes a rare appearance »

Dennis Hopper Returns to Crash with All New Cast Members

21 July 2009 6:20 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

They say Los Angeles is a city built of desire-a place of hope, possibilities, and a brighter tomorrow. Los Angeles is also a vast urban sprawl where those who don't attain their dreams can fall into isolation and despair. The Starz original series Crash premieres Friday, September 18 at 10:00 p.m. (et/pt).

Season two of Crash goes beyond the police storylines of the first season to focus on a farther-reaching collection of Angelenos from different social strata as their lives intersect. Is it by fate or coincidence that a billionaire visionary collapses in a parking lot and is helped by a strip-mall security guard? That a girl is murdered at the athletic club where she works? This season, multiple new storylines explore the human connections made in pivotal moments when characters must literally or figuratively fight for their lives. Nothing seems random in season two of Crash; instead, a »

Fox Searchlight goes 'Crazy' for Country Pic

21 July 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- How could you go wrong with character names such as Tommy Sweet, Jean Craddock and Bad Blake? Fox Searchlight has boarded a low budget indie pic which apparently works with a Tender Mercies-like plot and features a strong foursome of Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhall, Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall. Variety reports that Searchlight paid a low seven-figure minimum guarantee for worldwide rights to the indie drama, set for release in the spring. Perhaps a Sundance showcase is in the cards?Actor Scott Cooper made his directing debut with this feature, recently starred with Duvall in someone else's feature-length directorial debut. Aaron Schneider's Get Low will play out to buyers and the Torontonians in September. Based on the debut novel by Thomas Cobb, this centers on a down-on-his-luck, alcoholic country music singer named Bad Blake (Bridges) who is able to get his life and career back on track »

Tony Award Nominations / Movie Connections

5 May 2009 11:42 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Tony Award Nominations are upon us. As is my inconsistent tradition, I thought I'd share a little bit about a movies you can rent or think about to create an unfulfilling celluloid guilty-by-association approximation of the Broadway experience of the 2008/2009 season before the TONYs roll around on June 7th. Not everyone gets to New York to see the shows. And even if you live here, like me, you don't get to them in your financially challenged years. Tony Winners Cynthia Nixon (who seems to be everywhere lately, right?) and In the Height's man Lin-Manuel Miranda are announcing them live any minute now.

If you want a reminder of what's eligible which you can use to see who got snubbed check out this eligibility chart.

Foote, who died this month, was best known as a playwright but also wrote screenplays, with such movies as To Kill a Mockingbird and Tender Mercies, both of which won him Oscars. Bloom is also starring in Mark Ruffalo's directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious.
