Marvel's Avi Arad Secures Rights for a CGI Popeye Movie

24 September 2009 1:40 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Yesterday we keyed you in on some updates regarding a whole slew of Marvel properties from Ghost Rider to Daredevil. Well within that Variety article was a lot of information thrown around concerning all the reboots of franchises and tying most of them back to Marvel Studios founder and chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment, Avi Arad. The guy has had his hands in all Marvel productions, but a little tidbit that almost went overlooked regarding a project Arad is working on outside of the Marvel universe: "Arad has also secured rights to make a CGI animated feature based on the venerable strongman Popeye." Popeye the Sailor Man has been an iconic comic character since its inception in the late 1920's, but an attempt at a cinematic adaptation of the spinach eating sailor left something to be desired. Marvel is full speed ahead with several projects: Ghost Rider 2, Thor, Avengers, Captain America, and...Popeye. Marvel head Avi Arad has secured the rights to the tattooed spinach lover for a CGI animated feature. Popeye first appeared in the 1920's in comic form and has moved up since those days. The sailor has taken many forms from video games to advertisements to cartoons, this guy has seen it all. Robin Williams even lent his comedic chops to show his own version of the beloved... »

A computer-generated movie version of Popeye has undergone development. Marvel studio head Avi Arad revealed that he has secured the rights to the character and plans to reboot the famed sailor in a feature-length film utilising computer technology, Variety reports. Created by Elzie Crisler Segar, Popeye was first introduced to the public in the 1929 King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre. The character was adapted by Max and Dave Fleischer (more) »

New Popeye Movie in Development

24 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Marvel head Avi Arad recently revealed that studios are hard at work on "Ghost Rider 2," "Fantastic Four" and "Daredevil" reboots and a "Silver Surfer" spin-off. But that's not all that he has planned. Arad also secured the rights to "Popeye," in hopes of rebooting that franchise as well. But he won't go down the same path that the 1980 film, starring Robin Williams, did. He is instead planning to make it a CGI animated feature. Popeye the Sailor first appeared in comic strips back in 1929 and went on to be featured in comic books, animated films, video games, hundreds of advertisements and numerous television shows. The character has been around so long that he has entered the public domain in most countries. Unfortunately for Arad, Popeye remain under copyright in the Us. Popeye on "Family Guy": »

A CGI Popeye in the Works?

24 September 2009 6:37 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

In an article primarily focusing on a Ghost Rider sequel and other Marvel Comics movies currently in development, Variety reports that a CGI Popeye movie might be heading to the big screen.

Avi Arad, the man credited for dragging Marvel out of bankruptcy and setting it up to become a producer of its own film properties, left the company in 2007, but he hasn't left the characters behind. Arad, who is producing the Ghost Rider and Spider-Man franchises at Columbia, said that Marvel characters can be mined for movie ideas for decades.

I had this poster of the Marvel universe, with these beautifully drawn characters, and we used to say you could throw a dart, hit a character and make a hit movie under the Marvel brand. There is [a] long list yet to be unleashed. According to the article, Arad is separately developing an adaptation of the popular Japanese anime property »

First Look at ‘The Smurfs’ Movie

1 September 2009 1:29 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

With Hollywood scooping up as many franchises and rebooting them as possible these days, each of us are bound to see our favorite childhood TV show turned into a multi-million dollar film. For fans of The Smurfs, especially all the members of the Official Smurf Fan Club, that dream is finally coming true.

A few months back, Columbia Pictures announced that they were retooling the 1980s cartoon for not only the big screen, but in 3D as well. Now that some time has passed, the first poster has been revealed, showing us what the new-and-improved smurfs will look like, and if anyone has ever collected the Smurf figures, they know what to expect.

The script comes from the team of David N. Weiss and J. David Stern, who penned the script for other family films such as Shrek 2 and The Rugrats Movie. Behind the director’s chair is Raja Gosnell, »

Cool Stuff: Rick Baker’s Real Life Popeye

31 August 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

What would Popeye look like if he were a real life human? Probably nothing like Robin Williams... Six time Academy Award-winning special effects makeup artist Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black) apparently decided to sculpt a real-life version of the famous cartoon sailor man. However, I am unable to find the original source for the photo. I would love to see a horror movie trailer of Popeye using this design, kinda like how FunnyOrDie did with Gobstopper. Robin Williams Joins 'Wedding Banned'

28 August 2009 8:03 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The insanity. The epically hairy arms. The alien ways. As a child of the 80s, it's hard not to love Robin Williams. Popeye, Mork, Garp, The Frog Prince ... his Add comedy left an indelible impact on so many of us.

Unfortunately, it's been a good long while since I, for one, have been eager and anxious for a Williams film. In fact, I remember my last fan twinges clearly -- it was 1996 with The Birdcage. Soon after, Willims busied himself with drama and thrills, and they never held the same appeal. Sure, he headed back for the laughs a handful of years ago, but mainly with incomparable family films and side gigs. Now, however ... now it looks like we might get a Robin Williams comedic renaissance.

World's Greatest Dad is in limited release with great reviews, and The Hollywood Reporter posts that he will also play Dad in Touchstone's Wedding Banned. »

Duvall's Crazy Antics Exposed By Tabloid

27 August 2009 1:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Jack Nicholson's The Shining co-star Shelley Duvall has been exposed as an alien-obsessed crazy lady in a U.S. tabloid expose.

The actress, who also starred opposite Robin Williams in Popeye, has friends and neighbours in Blanco, Texas worried because she spends night after night patrolling her backyard, convinced her home is a portal for little green men.

One local tells the Globe, "Shelley is such a tragic soul. I feel terrible for her and wish someone could step in and do something. She desperately needs help."

Blano residents tell the tabloid that 60-year-old Duvall, who hasn't acted since 2002, flashes her car lights in a bid to communicate with extra-terrestrials and "wanders around town... looking dishevelled, strange and totally crazy."

Another local says, "She mutters to herself and talks about aliens living in her body."

And a local hardware supplier adds, "One time she came in and asked for dirt and boards to block up a hole in her backyard because, she said, 'That's a portal into another dimension. That's where the aliens are coming in.'" »

Popeye Now Public Domain in EU—Mickey Mouse Next?

1 January 2009 8:43 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Did you know? Starting today, Popeye enters public domain in Europe, according to their copyright law that protects an author's rights only until 70 years after their death. Popeye's creator Elzie Segar died young at the age of 43 in 1938, only 9 years after Popeye made his first appearance in a 1929 comic strip. In the Us, however, which protects rights for 95 years after the author's death, Popeye will remain copyrighted until 2024.

Popeye gets discharged in Europe

1 January 2009 6:34 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Mark Evanier reminds us that Popeye falls into the public domain today in Europe under an EU law that restricts the rights of authors to 70 years after their death. Elzie "E. C." Segar, the Illinois artist who created Popeye, Olive Oyl, brother Castor Oyl and Bluto, died in 1938. So if you're in Old Blighty and feel the urge to print t-shirts or write that story of Popeye the Sailor Man and his lusty sea life with Bluto, rum, sodomy, and the lash-- now's your chance.

Just don't let us know about it here in America, as King Features Syndicate still holds the copyright and trademark here and plan on vigorously enforcing it. »
