Poitier Pays Tribute To Hogan's Heroes Star Dixon

19 March 2008 5:12 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Legendary star Sydney Poitier has paid tribute to veteran actor Ivan Dixon, who has died at the age of 76.

Dixon, who appeared in TV shows including Hogan's Heroes, died of kidney failure at the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday.

Fellow thespian Poitier became friends with Dixon when they worked together on 1958 movie The Defiant Ones and has praised the late star, insisting he was often the better actor.

Poitier says in a statement, "As an actor, you had to be careful. He was quite likely to walk off with the scene."

Dixon's long-running career began on Broadway, New York but he was most famous for his television roles, which also included stints on hit shows including The Waltons, The Rockford Files, Magnum, P.I.and In The Heat Of The Night. He also appeared in cult 1970s movie Carwash.

Dixon is survived by his wife of 53 years, Berlie, his daughter Doris and son Alan.
