Director: Louis Leterrier Stars: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: In a loose adaptation from Greek mythology, Perseus (Worthington) who was born of a god but raised as a man, sets off on an epic mission to combat Hades (Fiennes) before he can seize power from Zeus (Neeson) and unleash hell on earth.
THE BUZZ: 3D is cool, PG-13 is a bummer for this of us who like our mythology dark and heady (though this is from the same studio that brought us the similarly rated Dark Knight). This remake has been around for a while -- the better part of the decade -- with Stephen Norrington once aboard to direct (eek). Most people know that this project jumped off the block faster than the formerly troubled, Tarsem Singh-helmed War of Gods (which is now about to commence filming), but did you know that director Louis Leterrier went on record to say the original Titans inspired his Hulk remake? Director: Julie Anne Robinson Stars: Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: A drama centered on a rebellious young woman (Cyrus) who is sent to spend the summer with her estranged father, who abandoned his family in the past.
THE BUZZ: TV director Julie Anne Robinson, who has worked on awesome shows from "Pushing Daisies" to "Weeds," makes her feature debut as Miley Cyrus her first non-Hannah appearance since Big Fish (sorry, voice roles don't count). Taking a quick glance at the storyline, the first original screenplay written by Notebook novelist Nicholas Sparks, it's clear this is a custom-fit tale for Ms. Cyrus and her audience, who are getting ready to graduate from standard Disney fare. Let's hope this one embraces the rebellious spirit and channels it effectively for all involved. We like Miley, and we hope in real life she pushes out on her own. Director: Tyler Perry Stars: Janet Jackson, Tyler Perry, Jill Scott (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: Four couples reunite for their annual vacation in order to socialize and to spend time analyzing their marriages. Their intimate week in the Bahamas is disrupted by the arrival of an ex-husband determined to win back his recently remarried wife. THE BUZZ: The first therapeutic vacation resulted in one of Tyler Perry's biggest non-Madea movies, so look for bigger, more melodramatic story arcs in part two which, coupled with Jackson-family mania, could attract movie-goers who have yet to have their first TP experience. Director: Roger Kumble Stars: Brendan Fraser, Brooke Shields (Full Cast) Studio: Summit Entertainment The Plot: An arrogant real estate agent gets in way over his head after he agrees to develop property on an Oregon forest and the area's animals sabotage his plans. THE BUZZ: Originally set to star Jeremy Piven, then Steve Carell before going with Fraser. We're fine with BF channeling his Loony Tunes: Back in Action slapstick side again, as long as the critters in this anti-suburban sprawl flick don't go all G-Force on us. Director: Tim Blake Nelson Stars: Edward Norton, Keri Russell, Henry Max Nelson (Full Cast) Studio: First Look International The Plot: An Ivy League professor (Norton) is lured back to his Oklahoma hometown, where his twin brother (Norton), a small-time pot grower, has concocted a scheme to take down a local drug lord.
THE BUZZ: Dual roles, dual roles -- how will they be handled by none other than Edward Norton? We know LoG is an Norton pet project, but we're wondering if the idea has been percolating since the mid-to-late 1990s, because the movie has the feel of a hybrid comedy from that era. Reviews have been grumpy-to-great, but most have pointed out the romance between square Norton and Keri Russell's characters comes out of nowhere. And most everyone wished for more Richard Dreyfuss. Director: Shawn Levy Stars: Steve Carell, Tina Fey (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation The Plot: In New York City, a case of mistaken identity turns a bored married couple's attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more thrilling and dangerous.
THE BUZZ: We hope Tina Fey and Steve Carrell made squeaky clean director Sean Levy (he most recently made the Night at the Museum sequel) tell 1,000 dirty jokes before cameras rolled on this adventure-comedy. We love both leads, and while we can guess how Farrell is going to play his character, we're in rapture wondering if Fey will be, like, Liz Lemon in action-hero mode? Swooning. And you couldn't really ask for a better supporting cast? Message Boards: This movie looks... | I SAW IT :) Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews | |||||

Director: David Nixon Patrick Doughtie Stars: Tanner Maguire, Jeffrey Johnson, Robyn Lively (Full Cast) Studio: Vivendi Entertainment The Plot: A young boy writes letters to God as he fights cancer, inspiring, among many other people, a postal worker tasked with "delivering" the boy's mail.
THE BUZZ: Crewmembers from Fireproof are present here -- in fact, director Bob Scott was the co-producer/assistant director of the Kirk Cameron Faith-based hit. Director: Nash Edgerton Stars: David Roberts, Claire van der Boom, Joel Edgerton (Full Cast) Studio: Apparition The Plot: An unscrupulous businessman (Roberts) looks to help his mistress (van der Boom) abscond with the dividends from her husband's lastest crime. THE BUZZ: Nash Edgerton does stunts, produces shorts, and apparently has made a neo-noir thriller worthy of Coen Bros. comparisons. Even if the film is thoroughly derivative -- though it looks to be otherwise -- we're just happy indie-minded distributors such as Apparition are taking chances on imports like this one. Also, Joel Edgerton, the co-star/writer/producer/brother here, should be a bonafide genre star by this next year, since he has Warrior due later in 2010 and The Thing remake in 2011. Director: Neil LaBute Stars: Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: A patriarch's funeral leads to a series of family arguments, revealing dark secrets and possibly murder.
THE BUZZ: If you've not seen the original 2007 comedy directed by Frank Oz, do it. Then, compare for yourself. Surprisingly hilarious turns from Peter Dinklage and Alan Tudyk are a tough acts to follow -- let alone, remake. Message Boards: Restricted clip | Seriously??? Director: Matthew Vaughn Stars: Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloe Moretz (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: Despite the fact that he has zero superpowers, teenage fanboy Dave Lizewski (Johnson) looks to reincarnate himself as a crime-fighting superhero named Kick-Ass, a decision that will inspire a subculture of copy cats, put his life in danger, and unite him with a similarly minded father-daughter duo (Cage and Moretz).
THE BUZZ: Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz could become two of the hottest young stars this year if their respective projects live up to the advance hype; aside from this comic adaptation, Johnson is playing John Lennon in Nowhere Boy while Ms. Moretz will appear in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Let Me In. Perhaps they should start dating one another to really cause a tabloid frenzy. Anyway, back to this adaptation of the comics by Mark Millar (he's the guy behind Wanted, too). You might remember that director Matthew Vaughn raised the cash for the production independently since the major studios feared the comic's level of hyper-violence; if I recall correctly, this was right before the Iron Man era, when the idea of developing "unknown" comics wasn't an option in Hollywood. Fast forward to Comic-Con 2009, with Lionsgate on board and knockout footage that was received better than Avatar and other major league projects, and an online sensation was born. The question of whether or not this one goes mainstream might not matter; with such a low budget, a built-in audience, and a storyline that naturally leads to a sequel -- which already has a premise, according to Millar -- a second chapter here could be more of a sure thing than Wanted 2. Director: Sylvain White Stars: Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: After being betrayed and left for dead, members of a CIA black ops team root out those who targeted them for assassination. THE BUZZ: Andy Diggle is one of the most treasured contemporary sci-fi comics writers, and Warner Bros., who undoubtedly learned a series of lessons from the non-event that was the Watchmen, has outfitted the characters from Eisner nominated espionage series with a cast cultivated for crossover appeal (though, yes, we think it's curious to have Jeffrey Dean Morgan in another comics adaptation). And there's the odd/cool couple of director Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) and screenwriter Peter Berg (The Kingdom), who is more familiar with the genre. If you'd like to download the first issue of the comic, go here. Director: Alan Poul Stars: Jennifer Lopez, Alex O'Loughlin (Full Cast) Studio: CBS Films The Plot: Single gal Zoe (Lopez) meets potential husband Stan (O'Loughlin) on the day of her artificial insemination. Despite the initial spark, the two lovers begin to wonder if they're taking the right steps to an enduring romance.
THE BUZZ: Chances are Jennifer Lopez's second big-screen comeback attempt might be irresistible to the Sex and the City set (it's cool that there's a smattering of female-friendly movies this spring/summer). Look for a big return on a modest budget, though it's doubtful Back-up will rack-up blockbuster numbers. Casting Patrick Dempsey might've helped to that end? Hopefully director Alan Poul, recently of the short-lived TV show "Swingtown", will bring some of that show's style to these proceedings. Director: Samuel Bayer Stars: Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: Disfigured serial killer Freddy Krueger (Haley) stalks a group of young people in their dreams, forcing them to remain awake as the only alternative to death.
THE BUZZ: This might be the most appealing horror remake to date, merely due to the casting of Jackie Earle Haley as the sweatered one. And in the world of music video directors turned auteurs, here's hoping Samuel Bayer ("Smells Like Teen Spirit") is more Michel Gondry/Spike Jonze than McG/Joseph Khan. Have to admit I dug the teaser trailer, and I'm into the other cast members, especially Kyle Gallner (the most successful ex-"Veronica Mars" star?), Rooney Mara (potential new scream queen action), and Thomas Dekker (who should be seen this year in All About Evil, the first midnight movie directed by a drag queen). Director: Glenn Ficarra John Requa Stars: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann (Full Cast) Studio: Consolidated Pictures Group The Plot: On his second go-round behind bars, scam artist Steven Russell (Carrey) commits the ultimate con in order to break out and win back the heart of Phillip Morris (McGregor), with whom he fell in love during his first prison sentence.
THE BUZZ: The major studios didn't touch this movie, even though it played well with Sundance audiences of all stripes. It's as though the apparent difficulty in marketing a gay-themed film trumps the presence of A-List stars and worshipped Bad Santa screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa joining up to adapt and direct this true story. Consolidated Pictures Group, who did a wonderful job with Bottle Shock, snapped up the movie months after the festival, and I hope they've used the better part of the year since the acquisition to put an ace marketing plan in place? In other words: please, please, please don't let this be a slip through the specialty-film market cracks.
