A Christmas Carol Rings in $9 Million Friday Box Office Opening
1 hour ago
Disney's A Christmas Carol easily won the battle of four new films at the box office on Friday by pulling in an estimated $9 million.
The Robert Zemeckis motion-capture holiday spectacle starring Jim Carrey in numerous roles bested mo-cap The Polar Express' $6.2 opening Friday but fell a little short of mo-capped Beowulf's $10 million. At its current clip, A Christmas Carol should wrap the weekend with a few million of $25 million.
Second place went to The Fourth Kind with Milla Jovovich at $5 million while The Men Who Stare at Goats earned $4.6 million behind George Clooney and Ewan McGregor.
Richard Kelly's The Box was the odd man out, coming in at $2.85 million or fifth place. Complete estimated weekend box office results will be available midday Sunday. »

Star Trek (2009) Blu-ray Review
Space. The Final Frontier. A place few were willing to venture with the last two Star Trek: The Next Generation helmed films. On virtual life support, J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot collaborators reinvented the iconic franchise into something hardened Star Trek fans and casual moviegoers without an ounce of prior interest in the series could equally digest and enjoy. His efforts carried Star Trek into a new frontier of success and riches at the 2009 box office, to a place where Paramount's treatment of the Blu-ray Disc release should . and marvelously does - fall into the esteemed category of exemplary.
Star Trek's reboot begins with a huge bang, a knockout prologue that chronicles the birth of James T. Kirk and the death of his father, a Starship Captain (for twelve minutes), all during a surprise attack by a renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana). Flash forward a quarter of a »

FlashForward Season 1, Episode 7 Review: The Gift
6 November 2009 6:56 AM, PST
For viewers on the verge of quitting FlashForward, frustrated by its tendency to ask questions without providing answers, "The Gift" should feel like a breath of fresh air. It not only definitively answers the question of whether the visions have to come true, it also sees fit to show us the nature of the Blue Hand and we find out whether Aaron's daughter is dead or alive. But in spite of its new-found willingness to answer its mysteries, it is hard to brand this episode a success.
It transpires that the Blue Hand is not a secret organization conspiring to destroy the world but rather a suicide club for those without flashforwards. It is hard to believe though that people would wish to be electrocuted, water-boarded and otherwise tortured simply because they think they will die soon. After all, knowledge of your own mortality does not stop you feeling pain. »

V Season 1, Episode 1 Review: Pilot
4 November 2009 6:39 AM, PST
The original 1983 miniseries V is a tense, slow-building piece of science fiction that showed the creation of a fascist movement in the United States by the alien Visitors.
An allegory for the creation of the Nazi movement, the original V portrays humanity becoming divided by propaganda with some choosing to collaborate with the alien regime and others forming underground resistance cells. Rightly acknowledged as a classic of the genre, expectations have been high for this new "reimagining" that premiered on ABC this week.
On the surface much remains the same between remake and source. Both share the arrival of alien Visitors, promising technological salvation to humanity's problems. Each explores how the media can be manipulated to spread propaganda, why some choose to collaborate and how resistance movements come into being.
Where this reimagining departs from the original concept is in aspects of its execution such as its lightning-quick pacing, topical »
Heroes Season 4, Episode 8 Review: Once Upon a Time in Texas
3 November 2009 6:21 PM, PST
One of the most compelling storylines from the first season of Heroes was the ill-fated romance between time-traveling Hiro and waitress Charlie (Jayma Mays, Glee). This week's episode "Once Upon a Time in Texas" revisits that storyline in what could be considered a risky move; after all, a poor effort could tarnish a beloved episode or risk drawing unfavorable comparisons between seasons one and four.
The episode begins with Hiro traveling back in time three years to the Burnt Toast Café in Odessa, Texas to try to save Charlie's life. Arriving on the day on which Sylar should murder her, he enters the café where he watches Sylar talk with her about her total recall ability.
Lurking in the background is Samuel, who has traveled back in time to attempt to recruit Hiro to his 'family' of carnies. Realizing what Hiro intends to do, Samuel asks him if he understands »
Star Wars The Clone Wars: Season One Blu-ray Review
3 November 2009 12:13 PM, PST
As the Star Wars prequel trilogy unfolded it became painfully clear that the Clone Wars emotionally alluded to by Ben Kenobi in A New Hope would not be the focus. The narrative chosen by George Lucas was a major blow to scores of adults who waited decades to see insinuated epic battles unfold only to be given glimpses of a galaxy-wide war through a short montage of Jedi being purged and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it skirmish pitting Wookies and Clones against droids.
The exclusion of the Clone Wars in the Star Wars prequels opened the door for spin-off alternative forms of entertainment to delve deeper into the world of Clones, Jedi, politics and the Separatist forces. After a short test of anime-influenced Clone Wars shorts on the Cartoon Network, LucasFilm embarked on a new CGI animated show that will cover the Clone Wars slipped over between episodes II and III of the live-action films. »
See a New Volturi Twilight Featurette
3 November 2009 9:43 AM, PST
The Twilight Saga: New Moon is ramping up over at MySpace with the addition of a new Volturi themed featurette that compliments last week's similar piece on the Wolf Pack.
This time we get to see Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Michael Sheen, Christopher Heyerdahl, Jamie Campbell Bower, Cameron Bright and even Stephanie Meyer chime in on the Volturi. Robert gets smacked around as his fight scene inside the Volturi lair is broken down. No Taylor Lautner for a welcome change.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon prepares to hit theaters on November 20. Ironically, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse wrapped principal photography just last week.

3 November 2009 9:26 AM, PST
The Prophet is looking to get back on track after a pitiful showing the last two weeks of the Weekend Box Office Prophet game.
Whereas last weekend saw Michael Jackson's This Is It as the lone new wide release film, this upcoming weekend sees four new films attempt to dethrone the King of Pop. Other newcomers include The Box with Cameron Diaz and James Marsden, The Fourth Kind with Milla Jovovich, and The Men Who Stare at Goats with George Clooney, Jeff Bridges and Ewan McGregor looking for laughs.
The objective of the Weekend Box Office game is twofold. You will predict the weekend box office gross for five films and try to be the closest of everyone playing. If you are, then you are hoping the cumulative score of »

Weekend Box Office Prophet Game Results: October 30 - November 1
2 November 2009 7:24 PM, PST
The Prophet made two critical errors in this past round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet game that cost him dearly.
First, he did not believe Michael Jackson fans would have shown up in force for the Wednesday and Thursday showings. They did, and it had a negative effect on the weekend as many had already seen the film. Second, he forgot about a little celebration called Halloween which kept many from theaters in favor of parties and trick-or-treating.
The results was the Prophet missing Michael Jackson's This Is It by an astronomical $28 million en route to his worst finish yet. Even though the Prophet was closer to Saw VI, Law Abiding Citizen and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant than the average player score which normally means no prize, a prize will still be awarded to Beefncheddar for placing first in their second round participating and for the Prophet's abysmal overall performance. »

Terminator Franchise On The Block
2 November 2009 9:41 AM, PST
The future is not set for the Terminator franchise but its fate may soon be decided.
According to an article at the Financial Times, Fti Captial Advisors will be auctioning off the rights to all future Terminator movie and television projects to the highest bidder. This would potentially include a sequel to Terminator Salvation which the winner would be vesting an interest in with the purchase.
Sony Pictures and Summit Entertainment are said to have expressed interest in snatching up Terminator on the cheap. Summit in particular is bathing in Twilight cash and adding the Terminator brand to its stable would help solidify its future past the Twilight years.
This news comes as Warner Home Video prepares to release Terminator Salvation on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, the latter with 3 additional minutes of footage not seen in theaters. »
