Breaking: 'Thor' jumps on 'Spider-Man 4's' release date
36 minutes ago
After the recent news of dissent between director Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures over the direction of "Spider-Man 4," it's now somewhat official that the film won't make its original May 6, 2011 release date. Sources tell HitFix that Paramount Pictures will announce that Marvel Studios' "Thor" will move from its original May 20 debut to the premier more lucrative May 6 date. That will make "Thor" the fourth Marvel character to kick off the summer after the first "Spider-Man" (May 3, 2002), "Iron Man" (May 2, 2008) and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (May 1, 2009). As one would expect, Paramount would »

Carrie Underwood learns 'How I Met Your Mother'
"American Idol" winner and country superstar Carrie Underwood is set to show off her acting skills on CBS' "How I Met Your Mother." In a March episode of the long-running comedy, which celebrates its 100th episode next Monday, Underwood will play Tiffany, a pharmaceutical sales rep who becomes a potential love interest for Josh Radnor's Ted. Might Underwood be the "Mother" of the title? We're just going to go out on a limb and say "No," though "How I Met Your Mother" got a nice ratings bump from a guest appearance by Britney Spears, so they may be hoping »

Tmr: Sean Penn's still a Stooge and are there really two cuts of 'The Wolf Man'?
Welcome to The Morning Read. As I was working yesterday on some articles, I was inspired by the "10 best man-in-gorilla-suit movies" list by Mr. Beaks at AICN to throw on some Three Stooges shorts. Those guys knew the value of a good man-in-a-gorilla-suit gag, and sure enough, about two shorts into the disc I randomly picked, there was an entire bit about a mad scientist who wanted to put Curly's brain in a gorilla's body. Good stuff. And obviously there's something about the simple vulgarity of the Three Stooges that endures. As long as I've known the Farrelly Brothers, they've been interested in making »
Susan Boyle stays at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 one more week
6 hours ago
Can Ke$ha stop Susan Boyle? The party girl seems to be the only hope in the foreseeable future for knocking the “Britain’s Got Talent” winner out of the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200. For the sixth consecutive row, Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” stays at the pinnacle, although her post-Christmas numbers drop dramatically to 136,000 copies. However, her six-week talent is an astonishing 3.1 million copies and that’s just in the U.S. alone. As you may have heard, her end-of-the-year surge in the U.K. propelled her past Lady Gaga’s “The Game” as the year’s top-seller. In the U.S., »

Watch: Mariah Carey rules Palm Springs gala with bizarre acceptance speech
7 hours ago
Palm Springs, Calif. (AP) — Mariah Carey lived up to her sometimes loopy reputation at the Palm Springs International Film Festival awards as she gave a long, rambling acceptance speech after being named Breakthrough Actress for her performance in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire." Carey, teetering in a skin-tight, black-beaded full-length Herve Leger gown, was escorted onto the stage Tuesday night, and at the podium, greeted her presenter and "Precious" director Lee Daniels with a little dance and a big hug. Carey hesitated for a few seconds, looked to the ceiling, sighed and said, "Please forgive me, because »

Keisha Castle-Hughes has signed on to guest star in an episode of the syndicated hit "Legend of the Seeker." Castle-Hughes will be filming her appearance this week, shooting in her native New Zealand. The 19-year-old actress will play a young woman claiming to be the living embodiment of a God. She apparently has plenty of power to go with that confidence, so it's up to Richard (Craig Horner), Kahlan (Bridget Regan) and Zedd (Bruce Spence) to find out the truth about her identity. In 2004, Castle-Hughes became the younger performer to be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for »

TV Ratings: 'NCIS' duo, 'Biggest Loser' squish Fox's Orange Bowl

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, January 5, 2009. Fox's college football bowl coverage had pretty much had its way with the competition in recent nights, but the Orange Bowl, featuring Iowa and Georgia Tech, was no match for CBS' regular dramas or the high-powered return of "The Biggest Loser" to NBC. Among adults 18-49, NBC won Tuesday night with a 3.8 rating, nipping the 3.7 rating for CBS and the 3.2 rating for Fox in the key demographic. ABC's 1.3 rating was a distant fourth, while The CW trailed with a 0.4 rating. Overall, though, CBS was in »

SXSW this year is totally going to Kick Ass
15 hours ago
Earlier today, I was goofing around on Twitter (big surprise) and Rebecca Feferman, who is in charge of press and publicity for South By Southwest (SXSW) was asking if anyone wanted to guess what movie might be opening the festival this year. I wrote back, "Beats me, but I bet it will kick ass." I got this e-mail a few minutes later as a reward for guessing it right. Here are the first official titles announced for the fest, and trust me... if you're able to get there for opening night, "Kick-Ass" is totally worth it. -------- Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } /* Style Definitions */ »
Oscar Watch: 'The Messenger' becomes a Best Picture wild card
16 hours ago
With films such as "Avatar," "The Hurt Locker," "Up," "Precious," "Up in the Air," "An Education" and "Inglourious Basterds" already viewed as safe Oscar bets there has been lots of speculation about which pictures will fill the last two to three slots in the Academy's new ten nominee Best Picture system. Following the holiday break, a somewhat surprising wild card entry has appeared on the scene: "The Messenger." Oren Moverman's moving portrait of a returning Iraq soldier who has to deal with the difficult task of being assigned to notify the kin of fallen servicemen wasn't one of the major discoveries »
Watch: Big Boi's video for 'Shine Blockas'
Oh sure, you can watch the video for Big Boi’s “Shine Blockas,” which raced with the far superior Jay-z clip for “On to the Next One,” to be the first video of 2010, but the only reason to is if you’re missing Gucci Mane since his unfortunate incarceration or just to hear the song, which is infinitely more interesting than the video. You’ll also learn that a Big Boi is Falcons fan, no surprise there given his Atlanta roots. After an amusing intro filmed at a Wal-Mart (where he’s looking for footies), the clip, basically turns into a collage of Outkast’s Big »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both pilots come from Sony TV and the Tantamount shingle. The trade paper says that the Mencia pilot will be based on the comic's professional and family life, which means that it'll actually be based on family jokes previously told by Ray Romano. Oh, we kid! Mitchel Katlin and Nat Bernstein will be writing the Mencia pilot, which actually looks at a man in the middle of a multigenerational immigrant family. In his »

Vince Vaughn is reportedly cheating with Ron Howard
5 January 2010 4:58 PM, PST
After spending the better part of the past five years helming two "Da Vinci Code" thrillers and the Oscar-nominated drama "Frost/Nixon," Ron Howard is heading back to comedy. Most don't realize the "Apollo 13" director has a long history in laughers starting with his debut "Night Shift" and then "Splash," "Gung Ho," "Parenthood" and the disappointing "The Paper" and "Edtv." Now, Howard is teaming up with Vince Vaughn for a new untitled comedy about infidelity. Written by Alan Loeb, the new project is generically described as "an exploration of the comedic fallout surrounding infidelity between lovers and friends." At least, that's »
