Let Me In to Hit Theaters on October 1st
In 2008 Let the Right One In, a Swedish film about a boy’s friendship with a young girl vampire, was released to critical acclaim and resonated internationally on a greater level than any other Swedish film of the decade. Likely inspired by the current popularity of vampire-based media such as Twilight and True Blood, an American remake similarly titled Let Me In was commissioned by Overture Films. The film now has an official release date of October 1, 2010. Let Me In is directed by Cloverfield’s Matt Reeves, and stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloe Moretz, and Richard Jenkins. For a look at the film’s potential and a full plot synopsis, hit the jump.
I was a bit surprised to see that the film is scheduled for a wide release, if only because the rather subdued tone of the original seemed more suited for arthouse cinemas. I am curious to see how »

10-Year-Old Michael Cera Will Kill You with His Mind
4 hours ago
After you see Youth in Revolt this Friday (and you should because it’s hilarious), you’ll be dispelled of any notion that Michael Cera can only play shy, mild-manner characters. His alter-ego in the film, Francois Dillinger is a character folks wouldn’t normally expect from Cera and that expectation helps make him even funnier.
But Cera’s always had this kind of range. While I would like to direct you to his YouTube video “Impossible is the Opposite of Possible” and his web-series “Clark and Michael” (co-starring Clark Duke), I believe this clip Cera showed on Late Night with David Letterman will demonstrate that most folks don’t know his true power. And that true power is he can kill you with his mind. Hit the jump to check out the video.

Collider Nominated For Best News Blog by TotalFilm.com!
In what is a tremendous honor for us here at Collider, TotalFilm.com has nominated our site for Best Movie Blog of 2010. For those who don’t know, Total Film began back in 1997 and is one of the best-selling movie magazines around. In their nomination of our site, TotalFilm.com described us thusly: “On the up-and-up, Collider have had a strong year bolstered by some big exclusives and a lot of hard work.” If we win, we would like to share our award with Megan Fox, the boy who handed Megan Fox a flower, and all the foreign child labor we pay to write news. I’m just kidding about that last one. We don’t pay them anything.
However, we are in some fine company. But there are some things* I feel you should know about our fellow nominees so you can make a fully informed decision: the folks »

Seven Features Still in Running for VFX Oscar Race
5 hours ago
Are there really six other movies this year that can compete with the visuals of Avatar, which is clearly on a mission for world domination? According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, apparently so. The Academy has announced these seven films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 82nd Academy Awards: Avatar, District 9, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 2012.
Thursday, Jan. 21, all members of the academy’s Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films, and then pick the three they think should make it to the final round on Oscar night. The Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday, Feb, 2, at 5:30 a.m. Pt.
Having seen all of these except 2012 (I just couldn’t bring myself to do it), if I were a betting man, »

Robocop Remake Out of Juice Unless it Drinks 3D?
While MGM clearly searches for solid ground, Darren Aronofsky’s RoboCop reboot has stalled, according to MovieHole. The essential crux of the delay is that Mary Parent, Chairperson of MGM, seems to want the film in 3-D.
We have James Cameron’s massive success with Avatar to thank for that, though it isn’t entirely his fault that he successfully launched a franchise on the back of an extra dimension. Bringing an alien world to life in 3-D makes sense, but a film like RoboCop might not.
In fact, it is Aronofsky that appears to be against the change. To find out why and the possible future of the re-imagining, hit the jump.
As “Nash,” from RoboCop Archive, tells MovieHole:
“I’ve spoken with Phoenix Pictures [and] asked them about the status of Robocop… they told me that the project is on hold. The problem is that Mary Parent, Chairperson of MGM, »

Warner Bros. Will Bring More Content to Netflix…28 Days Later
6 hours ago
Warner Bros. has made a deal with Netflix to increase their stock of WB DVD and Blu-rays, but only after the film has been available to consumers to purchase for 28 days after its street date. In exchange, not only will Netflix be able to offer the availability of these new releases to their customers. But the best part of the deal for Netflix consumers is that WB will also be expanding Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” selection of movies. This is a massive boon to Netflix’s VOD service where recent new VOD movies include Zac Efron: The Ultimate Idol and The Gamers: Dorkness Rising. However, it’s not all bad. I did just add Spymate to my queue (and you should too).
Hit the jump for my thoughts on the deal along with the full press release.
While I am a little disappointed about the move to delay rentals in order to sell movies, »

Taylor Lautner and Tom Cruise to Co-Star in Flyboy Movie Northern Lights
6 hours ago
According to Deadline, Taylor Lautner and Tom Cruise will be co-starring in a film called Northern Lights, with filming set to start on April 1st. David Ellison’s Skydance Productions is behind the film, and John Moore of Max Payne fame will be directing. This film makes Lautner now the highest paid teenage star with his salary for the role rumored at $7.5 million, though that salary does not include countless tween-girl screams. And no, Lautner won’t be playing a shirtless werewolf. Sorry to get your hopes up, but you’ll have to wait until Eclipse for more of that.
The plot of Northern Lights sounds an awful lot like Top Gun, but if you ask me that’s not a problem since it’s easily the best airplane-based homoerotic American action movie other than Con-Air. The film is about “a gifted, young aerobatics pilot who faces off with his controlling, »

George Lucas Talks Star Wars with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show
7 hours ago
Last night, George Lucas appeared on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to promote his new book “George Lucas’ Blockbusting.” However, as would be expected, the focus on the conversation wasn’t on his new book, but immediately centered on the Star Wars franchise. Every single Star Wars fan should check this video out. I’m a huge, Huge fan of Stewart as both a comedian and as a journalist. He pretty much always speaks his mind and asks the questions that need to be asked. In this case he just goes for it and asks the questions that fans often wonder about when it comes to Lucas, such as-and I’m paraphrasing a bit-how does it feel to piss off a whole generation of fans and do you still believe you’re as creative as you used to be? The latter one I found especially brilliant and ballsy. Granted, »

Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis Might Get a Hall Pass
8 hours ago
As reported by THR, Owen Wilson has signed on for the lead role in the Farrelly Brothers’ upcoming comedy Hall Pass. The film focuses on a couple who have reached a stagnant point in their marriage. In order to spice things up a bit, the wife gives her husband a “hall pass,” which allows him to engage in extramarital encounters for a whole week.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly rewrote the spec script by Pete Jones and will be directing and producing the film. Jason Sudeikis of SNL fame-one-half of the “Two A-Holes”-is in negotiations to co-star alongside Wilson. The movie begins production February 23.
As with any comedy, the cast makes the film and both Wilson and Sudeikis-if he ends up committing-have proven their comedic chops. Also, even though the Farrellys hit a bit of a hiccup in their last theatrical outing with 2007’s Heartbreak Kid, their record still holds strong with films like, »

Paranormal Activity Blu-ray Review
The horror genre is the cruelest in cinema. Though a not-terribly funny comedy may be genial enough to give it a pass, it’s fair to say scares are cut and dried. And, for all the genre entries, most movies aren’t that scary, and many modern films can’t even deliver on the promised “Boo! Scares” of a door slammed shut or a zombie showing up in an improbable place. For the most part horror filmmakers are just as willing to rely on gore. But there’s an art to a good scare film, and the lower fidelity the better; CGI just isn’t scary. But more than anything, horror is about tone, and what Paranormal Activity does absolutely right is never let the viewer off the hook. Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat star as themselves (essentially) as a couple who records the supernatural happenings at their place. My »

Filming on Guillermo Del Toro’s The Hobbit Scheduled to Begin in June
20 hours ago
According to Production Weekly’s Twitter feed, Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is scheduling to begin its 14-month production this June. For those who need a brief refresher, The Hobbit is being released in two parts; Part 1 is scheduled for December 2011 and Part 2 is scheduled for December 2012. Since these films are being shot back-to-back, the 14-month shoot isn’t surprising, but the question will be how the shoot affects those release dates. Will they see that things are moving along quickly enough that they should be able to make their target or-and this is the depressing part, kids-will they have to reschedule in order to get it right. I can’t see Gdt or producer Peter Jackson willing to rush a film just to make an arbitrary release date, and if it takes another year, so be it. We’ll all be just as excited. »

Super Bowl Xliv Ads Revealed - Universal, Paramount and Walt Disney Buy Spots
20 hours ago
With Super Bowl Xliv airing in a month (February 7, 2010), the list of advertisers who have bought spots has been revealed. While the country is still in a recession and some may think paying almost $3 million for 30 seconds of airtime is crazy, the fact is…you’re going to get around 100 million people watching your commercial, and that’s an enormous amount of eyeballs.
So to try and raise awareness for this year’s biggest movies, Universal, Paramount and Walt Disney have all bought TV spots. Universal and Disney have purchased one spot, while Paramount bought three. Universal will probably show Robin Hood or Wolfman, Walt Disney might go with Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3 or Prince of Persia, but you don’t have to wonder about Paramount, as they’ll be showing Shutter Island, Iron Man 2 and The Last Airbender during the first and second quarters. For fans of all these films, »

Zombieland Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick Take a Shot at Deadpool
21 hours ago
With Ryan Reynolds set to reprise his role in the upcoming spinoff-of-a-spinoff Deadpool, Fox has hired Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to give words to the “Merc with a Mouth.” While some may wonder how the whole “mouth” thing is going to happen after the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, producer Lauren Shuler Donner has already said that this will be a reboot of the character. She also says that this is going to be a “dark, snarky, very funny movie.”
There is currently no start date for Deadpool, but Variety notes that Reynolds should have a window in his schedule after Green Lantern finishes shooting this summer. Fox is lucky that Reynolds will already be bulked up and can once again make the majority of male geeks in the audience feel bad about their physiques. On a positive note, Reese and Wernick say they will stay true »

The Oscars, Australian Government, and You: A Guide to Oscar Nods
21 hours ago
On February 2nd, at 5:30 a.m. Pst the Academy will announce its final list of Oscar hopefuls. But how are the nominees selected? Raffle? Some kind of barbaric fire ritual? Screenwriter/blogger John August gives us the answer. The final list of ten nominees is actually pruned down from a few hundred potential films (274 this year) by preferential voting rather than by a plurality. That way, a movie needs more than 10% of the total votes to be nominated. Preferential voting essentially lessens the chance of a wasted vote by giving each voter a series of fall back choices instead of one all or nothing shot. Australia uses the same system for political elections.
Hit the jump to see a breakdown of the system.
It’s kind of a confusing concept so I’ll try to give a practical example. My list of the ten best movies of the year looks like this. »

Lost Creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse “Talk” about the Final Season
23 hours ago
If you’re wondering why I put “talk” in quotations in the headline, it’s because Lost creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have mastered the art of talking about the show’s future without really saying anything. The Live Feed conducted an interview with Lindelof and Cuse where they were asked about the final season and while they revealed very little, Lost fans will take any table scraps they can find as they anxiously await the February 2nd season premiere.
Hit the jump for Lindelof and Cuse talking about who may be returning, how the final season will fit in with the whole, how they expect the finale to be received, and why they both loved the season finale of The Shield.
Describing the tone of the new season, Cuse says they’ll be bringing it back around and it will be most similar to season one. They’re »

Michael Mann To Direct HBO Pilot Luck by Deadwood Creator David Milch
23 hours ago
HBO is tapping Michael Mann to direct the hour-long series pilot for Luck by Deadwood creator David Milch. Mann was drawn to Luck based on the script itself, as well as feedback from Martin Scorsese and his experience directing Boardwalk Empire for HBO. It also helps that he and Milch have a long-standing friendship, going back to the days when they were working on Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues respectively. When asked about Mann directing, Milch said, “I am feeling very lucky to have Michael direct this and am champing at the bit, to borrow a few horse racing phrases.”
Find out more about Luck after the jump.
Speaking with BFDMemo, here’s what Milch had to say about Luck, “The pilot is about a bunch of intersecting lives in the world of the horse racing track.” On the surface the premise seems somewhat pedestrian, but Milch went onto »

Director Jonathan Levine and Actress Anna Kendrick Join McAvoy and Rogen in I’M With Cancer
5 January 2010 6:06 PM, PST
The untitled James McAvoy/Seth Rogen cancer dramedy from Mandate Pictures hit a speed bump back in November when director Nicole Holofcener (Friends with Money) dropped out. Today comes news from The Hollywood Reporter that the project is once again moving forward with director Jonathan Levine (The Wackness) set to take over the helmer’s position and actress Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air, Twilight) signed on to co-star. The upcoming flick, which has a working title of I’m with Cancer, is set to begin principal photography in February and will see McAvoy playing Adam, a young man who is forced to battle cancer in his 20’s. Kendrick will play Katherine, a psychologist who helps Adam through the process. The film is based on its writer Will Reiser’s own experiences with cancer. Rogen, in addition to co-starring, will produce along with partner Evan Goldberg.

Spider-man 4 Start Date Pushed Back, Release Date Now Uncertain; Could Film Be in 3D?
5 January 2010 5:00 PM, PST
The next installment of the Spider-Man franchise could lose its coveted May 11, 2011 opening (due to script problems). Director Sam Raimi has yet to settle on a script, a process that has already involved screenwriters Jamie Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, and Gary Ross. Currently in the hands of Alvin Sargant, who wrote Spider-Man 2 and 3, Sony is still planning on a Summer 2011 release but studio sources are saying, “It is unlikely that May 11, 2011, date will be made.”
Originally set to start filming in February, production was pushed back to early March then late March or early April. Currently there is no official start date. While Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal assured fans they were still working toward the original date saying, “I’m going to do everything I can to make May,” she acknowledged the importance of having a completed script, “…I’m not going to start a movie where the script isn’t right yet. »

Ron Howard and Vince Vaughn Randomly Team-Up for Comedy about Infidelity
5 January 2010 5:00 PM, PST
I don’t know which of these things surprises me the most: that Ron Howard is making a comedy starring Vince Vaughn, Ron Howard will be working off a script not by Akiva Goldsman (which mean the movie has the potential to be good), or that Howard is making a movie that is neither Oscar-bait or a big action blockbuster.
BFDMemo reports that Vaughn will star in a Howard-directed (and currently untitled) film about infidelity written by Allen Loeb (21, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps). While I found their recent films terrible, both Vaughn and Howard have had good years at the box office with Couples Retreat grossing $108 million and Angels & Demons pocketing $485 million worldwide.
