James Franco Cast in Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours
3 hours ago
Production Weekly is reporting that James Franco has been cast as the lead in Danny Boyle's (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) next film project, 127 Hours, a story of Aron Ralston, the mountain climber who amputated his own arm to free himself after being trapped by a boulder for nearly five days. The industry paper also reports that production will begin in early March in Utah. The screenplay written by frequent Boyle collaborator and Slumdog Millionaire writer Simon Beaufoy is said to contain no dialogue what-so-ever for the first hour of the story. In the true life story, Ralston was completely alone, stuck in the canyon. And Boyle has said that he would not be introducing any volleyball tricks a la Tom Hanks in Castaway. »

The Estate of Philip K. Dick Threatening Google With Legal Action
3 hours ago
Google have decided to call their new cellphone the Nexus One which suggests it's a full five... er... Nexuses not as good as those naughty Replicants that gave Rick Deckard such trouble in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, filmed as Blade Runner. This comparison has not been lost on the estate of author Philip K. Dick who have launched a law suit against the company. There are a great many other products and companies called Nexus this and Nexus that, from a Tyne and Wear subway system to a manufacturer of "custom designed plugs, jacks and switches". The difference here is that Google have gone for Nexus 'Number' and, according to The Wall Street Journal, "the association between the phone and the book are cemented by the fact that the Nexus One runs Google's Android operating system". Yes - Android. I think that word is in the book too. »

James Cameron Meets Atomic Bomb Survivor To Research Film
4 hours ago
Update: Sad news. Tsutomi Yamaguchi has died. A tragic reminder of how important Cameron's promise to honour the victims of this tragic moment in history actually is. Here's the Guardian's report. After years and years of slaving away over Avatar - though most definitely, I think we're agreed, not in vain - what is James Cameron doing now? It would seem he's already plunged straight back into hard work. According to reports, Cameron paid a visit to Nagasaki, Japan, on the 22nd of December. He was there to visit Tsutomu Yamaguchi, one of the few survivors of the American Atomic bomb attacks on Japan in the second World War. Cameron made the visit to a hospital, where Yamaguchi is staying, being treated for cancer. He was accompanied by Charles Pellegrino, who has written a new book about the attrocities called The Last Train from Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back. Where »

A Behind the Scenes Look at Platinum Dunes’ A Nightmare on Elm Street
5 hours ago
Final Destination just hit DVD, and bundled on the disc is a short behind the scenes preview of the upcoming remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, from Platinum Dunes. The clip shows off some new footage, including the creation of Freddy Krueger's knives, and has a few quick interview clips with Jackie Earle Haley, who plays this incarnation of the horror icon. I'm still on the fence about this one; so much of what we've seen from Sam Bayer's version of the story looks too much like a beat-by-beat regurgitation of the original, with a scant few new touches. But I love Haley, and I'd be thrilled if this turned out to be as much fun as the first and third films in the original series. Check out the clip after the break. The quality is low, and we'll update when a better one is available. For the time being, »

So… Is Back to the Future Coming to Blu-ray This Year Or Not?
Break out the champers because the short answer appears to be yes. But why the confusion? The story starts on December 28th, when Spanish home video site Zona DVD ran an Iberian equivalent of an April Fools joke and unveiled a spoof trade ad for Blu-ray releases of the Back to the Future trilogy. "5 Discs in High Definition" it declared, "Totally remastered and restored, supervised by director Robert Zemeckis". There's also a box-out which promises "New exclusive short film Jaws 19 in 3D". Looks immediately to me to be a fake, if a wonderfully well produced one, and you can see it in full below the break. Check this out for a nice prank: People started asking around as to whether this sellsheet was genuine, and of course some of these questions were directed at online disc mavens like Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits. His particular response was far from expected, »

New Warner Bros. DVDs Won’t Appear on Netflix for 28 Days After Release
5 hours ago
The slumping DVD business has caused a lot of consternation at film studios, which rely on DVD revenue to buoy profit margins. Now Warner Bros. has restructured the deal under which Netflix offers the studio's discs to subscribers. Starting this month, Netflix will wait 28 days after the release of new Warner Bros. DVD titles before offering them to subscribers.(This probably isn't the sequel to 28 Days Later you were hoping for.) This is the same deal that Warner Bros. has with Redbox, and while the Redbox terms led to a lawsuit, Netflix has accepted the new structure in exchange for other terms favorable to the rental company. An inkling of this deal was first heard in August, and the La Times reports that Netflix has agreed to the 28-day "sell-through" window in exchange for "improved financial terms, higher inventory levels and increased access to content for its online streaming service. »

Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life to Get Cannes Premiere?
If I were putting together a 'most anticipated films of 2010' list one of the highest-ranked entries would be The Tree of Life, the new Terrence Malick generational family drama that has been simmering in an edit bay for months. Once positioned as a possible release late last year, the film wasn't finished in time, and has been penned in for the best possible release date: when it's done. But a few buried nuggets of info in recently published articles suggest that we'll definitely see the film this year (not a given, with Malick) and that it will have a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. There's also a new synopsis, which should be considered spoilerish; it's at the bottom of the post. The Playlist assembled a couple of mentions that hit the web over the holidays, and taken together they paint an optimistic picture of the film's eventual release. »

More on Hall Pass, the Farrelly Brothers Comedy Starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis
7 hours ago
I mentioned Hall Pass in brief yesterday while talking about Sean Penn's reported return to the cast of the Farrelly Brothers take on The Three Stooges. At the time all we had were a few basic details: Owen Wilson is starring the film, which the Farrellys will shoot in Atlanta next month. (With Atlanta standing in for New England.) New Line picked up the film after Fox put it in turnaround, and it sounds like a comedy in line with the tame recent work of the filmmaking brothers rather than the broad, over the top stuff that made them popular in the first place. We've got a few more details now, thanks to trade reports. I'm betting there's not yet enough known to ignite more than cautious curiosity in most readers. THR offers a slightly expanded synopsis of the film, which was written by Peter Jones as a spec, »

Update: There is Not Another Editor on Wolfman
7 hours ago
[Update: Universal has contacted us to confirm that there are no two competing cuts of Wolfman. According to the film's producer, "The movie's been done for a while. We finished the cut, and obviously we are now mixing and scoring and putting in our final effects right now, but the movie's been finished. The concept of having two competing cuts and the studio having their own editing room and all that simply not true." AICN has more details as well. The original article follows.] There's not long now to make any alterations, and even less time to test screen them, but The Playlist are reporting that yet another editor has been brought on to recut The Wolfman, street date February 12th. According to them, Walter Murch and Mark Goldblatt are done with their work on the picture and currently, two edit bays are lit up with director Joe Johnston in one »

Taylor Lautner Will Co-Star with Tom Cruise in Northern Lights
8 hours ago
Seems premature to be giving Taylor Lautner multi-million paydays based only on New Moon, doesn't it? The film did amazingly well, and he became an instant heartthrob, but how much of that was Lautner and how much was just Twilight? Impossible to tell until he's in a non-Twilight film or two. Which is why he's being courted left and right for new films, including Max Steel and Cancun. Before those get a chance to get off the ground, however, he'll earn $7.5m to star as Tom Cruise's son in Northern Lights, a film that sounds like Top Gun, Jr. Nikki Finke has the story; she says that John Moore (who last directed the woeful Max Payne) will direct the film with Lautner and Cruise starring. An April 1 start date is reported. The film is about "a gifted, young, aerobatics pilot who faces off with his controlling, billionaire father and »

MGM Updates: The Hobbit, Robocop and a Remake of FX
8 hours ago
The sell-off situation with MGM right now seems to be the eye of a film news storm, all sorts of other business swirling around it, crashing and smashing and, sometimes, just whizzing by perfectly intact like that darn cow from Twister. Just last night we found out that Bond 23 is being fast-tracked, despite earlier indication that he was being put on ice and today we get updates on Bilbo Baggins, Robocop and Rollie Tyler, FX supremo. The latest on The Hobbit, via Production Weekly, is that production is set to start in June and continue for 14 months. That of course means a healthy overlap between post production of the first film and production of the second as Del Toro and co. power on to a late 2011 release. Maybe they're so well prepared with animatics that assembling the basic edit will be a piece of cake, but there's definitely »

Avatar Earns China’s Biggest-Ever Opening Box Office
11 hours ago
After delays forestalled the original opening date, Avatar opened in China on Monday and quickly took in about 33.03m yuan (Usd$4.8m) to become the biggest-ever film open in the country's history. The previous record holder opened just this past December. Zhang Yimou's A Simple Noodle Story (the director's loose remake of Blood Simple) took in 21m yuan on December 10. As when James Cameron's movie opened in the States and the UK, the film faced highly inclement weather in many major markets, says Variety. High ticket prices (up to 150 yuan / $22 in Beijing) helped the record-breaking take. Reactions to the film so far seem to be in line primarily with those heard around the world: the technology on display overcomes any other shortcomings. Cameron's Titanic did well in China, too, with a 320m yuan take. Pirated DVDs have also been selling quickly, says Variety, based on conversations with street vendors. »
