Director Joe Wright has laughed off reports he is set to head up the remake of My Fair Lady, insisting he is not connected to the picture.
Daily Variety claimed Wright would be reteaming with Keira Knightley for a new version of the 1964 musical, based on George Bernard Shaw's comedy of manners, Pygmalion.
But the Atonement filmmaker has shot down the rumours, revealing he turned the project down.
He says, "It's not happening! It's all a lie. I thought about it for a couple of minutes and decided not to do it, and then suddenly it got into the press that I was doing it." »

Well, we can't be right all the time. Last week we brought you the news from the trades (it was in Variety! It's not our fault!) that Joe Wright, director of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, would be reteaming with Keira Knightley for a new version of My Fair Lady, scripted by Emma Thompson. It turns out that at least 33.3% of that story is completely untrue, as discovered by Screenrush when they asked Joe Wright about it at the London Film Festival."It's not happening! It's all a lie!" opines Wright. "I thought about it for a couple of minutes and decided not to do it, and then suddenly it got into the press that I was doing it." And his motives for turning it down? "No reason really. You get a lot of scripts and you read them and..."So that's Danny Boyle and Joe Wright out of the director's chair. »

It's nothing like the merry-go-round of screenwriters but it does sometimes seem that pretty much all studio pictures go through a few directors on their way to the screen. Very often a director will board a project, wrestle with it for months, if not years, then depart. Other times, a whole list of directors will have passed pretty much as soon as they close the script and a project can find some time to find somebody willing to commit. The last we told you, Marc Forster was going to direct zombie epic World War Z from a script by Matthew Carnahan. Some rumours bubbled up in the summer that he was off the project, but died down pretty quickly, and now word is definitely that he's very much still in the driving seat. On the other hand, our last report on Joe Wright told you that he would be directing »

Well, here's a spanner in the works: Joe Wright directly contradicts reports from this past weekend that he'll be directing My Fair Lady. For the better part of two years, Keira Knightley has been the odds-on choice to update Eliza Doolittle, and we wrote that she had beaten out Scarlett Johansson for the role just a few days ago. As part of that announcement, Wright's name was dropped as the new director. But not according to him.
You can see in the video below (from Screenrush) that Wright isn't making the movie, plain and simple. It's a natural connection, though, because his first two films - Pride and Prejudice and Atonement - both starred Knightley. Plus, after the disappointing returns of The Soloist, Wright might have been reaching for a sure thing.
No such luck, though: »

When we reported earlier this week that Keira Knightley would star in a Joe Wright-directed remake of My Fair Lady, we were already getting conflicting reports that neither Knightley nor Wright had a thing to do with the movie. Now we have confirmation from one participant, at least. Screenrush caught up with Wright on the red carpet at the London Film Festival, and he assured them that the reports of him directing My Fair Lady are "all a lie." Interestingly, he couldn't say much about Knightley's participation-- "Keira might well do it"-- which probably mean the years-old reports about Knightley being in the film are still valid. Below you can see Wright's rebuttal for yourself, including what seems to be utter bewilderment that anyone would make up this story to begin with. »

When Screenrush grabbed two minutes with Joe Wright on the red carpet for the London Film Festival's Closing Gala film Nowhere Boy, there was really only one thing on our mind to ask him about - My Fair Lady.
Over the last few days the rumour mills have been churning out stories that the Atonement director and Keira Knightley will be reteaming on a remake of the classic George Bernard Shaw adaptation, which was released in 1964 starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison and has been delighting family audiences ever since.
So we were more than a little taken about when Wright flatly denied any involvement in the project, saying that he had mulled over the idea for a couple of days after the script was sent to him, as he would do with any other project, but decided to pass on the opportunity.
Unfortunately he could not tell us which »

Just the other day, we brought you news from a British newspaper that was reporting Keira Knightley had officially singed on to star in My Fair Lady with Joe Wright (Atonement) directing. It all seemed a little shaky and at the time I noted, "I'm always wary of article that include 'we hear....' before they talk about an upcoming scoop." Turns out it was more than a little shaky. It was completely false. Screenrush caught up with Wright last night on the red carpet for Nowhere... »

We all already know that Keira Knightley is a fair lady, but now she is the Fair Lady. The 24-year-old English actress has landed the role of Eliza Doolittle in the new remake of the Academy Award-winning 1964 musical, My Fair Lady.
The original film, based on the Broadways smash, starred Audrey Hepburn as Cockney flower girl Eliza and Rex Harrison as the prickly, precise professor Henry Higgins. Keira reportedly beat out Scarlett Johansson for the iconic role. Other than Natalie Portman, it’s hard to think of another young actress who could possibly attempt to take Audrey’s place.
And this news just keeps getting better. The script is being written by — get this — Oscar-winner Emma Thompson. Yes, that Emma Thompson. Directing will be Joe Wright, who grew accustomed to Keira’s face when he directed her in 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. And James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, is being »

According to Telegraph.co.uk, Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean) has won the role of Eliza Doolittle in a new film adaptation of “My Fair Lady.”
Scarlett Johansson was also up for the lead role, but the site reported that Joe Wright has come on to direct, and it seems that Wright has gone with Knightley, who he directed in “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement” to star.
Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) is writing the screenplay. Daniel Craig is also being mentioned as a possibility to play Professor Henry Higgins.
Knightley, the 24-year-old actress, last starred in “The Duchess” and has a few new upcoming roles, including in William Monahan’s “London Boulevard.”

Keira Knightley has not landed a role in "My Fair Lady". Few days after U.K.'s Telegraph reported that she has beaten Scarlett Johansson to play the major character in the remake of 1964 film with the same title, Gossip Cop has received a confirmation from her agent's office, who said the news was "not true."
Moreover, the agent's office claimed they knew nothing about the upcoming movie's production. Meanwhile, Keira's involvement in singing lessons, which has been linked to her preparation for joining the musical film, has been described as part of her forthcoming stage debut in a London production of a play entitled "The Misanthrope."
U.K.'s Telegraph was the first which came up with news that Keira Knightley has been chosen to portray Eliza Doolittle in the 2011 film. Moreover, the site reported that she will team up once again with director Joe Wright, with whom she »

It seems that Keira Knightley is the fair lady of choice for director Joe Wright. According to Daily Telegraph actress Keira Knightley will star the remake My Fair Lady.
Scarlett Johansson was also up for the lead role, but the site reported that Joe Wright has come on to direct, and it seems that Wright has gone with Knightley, who he directed in Pride & Prejudice, to star. Here's a quote from an unidentified source for the site.
"Joe and Keira are looking forward to working together again immensely," says a friend of the 37-year-old director.
Wright had been previously attached to direct the film Indian Summer, but left the project, which freed him up to direct this film.

We reported nearly a year and a half ago that Keira Knightley would be playing the lead in a remake of My Fair Lady, a musical that would also draw from the original stage play's source material, George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. Now London's Daily Telegraph is reporting, with a jubilant "By George She's Got It!", that Knightley has beat on Scarlett Johansson for the role. Oh, and self-explanatory site Gossip Cop is crowing that the Telegraph story is bogus, and Knightley doesn't even know the project exists. What's going on? I have no idea, really. The My Fair Lady remake had been linked to Danny Boyle at one point, but he's apparently putting that one off. Instead Joe Wright, who directed Knightley in both Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, is reportedly tackling the project, in the wake of his planned film Indian Summer getting put in deep-freeze by Universal over »

Last summer, it was reported that Columbia was setting up a remake of My Fair Lady and that Keira Knightley was pursuing the iconic, Cockney role of Eliza Doolittle. While Knightley has been "attached" ever since, The Telegraph reports that Scarlett Johansson was also vying for the role. But Knightley won out, and the Telegraph not only confirms that she's got the role, but that Joe Wright will be directing. Emma Thompson is writing the script.
Knightley has been taking singing lessons ever since the possibility came up (and I actually think she proved she had a good voice in The Edge of Love), and I think she'll be absolutely charming as Doolittle. But then I'm biased towards her. Even if you aren't (and I expect many "too skinny!" comments), I think the combination of Wright and Thompson pushes this into very, very promising territory. Thompson can do no wrong by me. »

There are few Hollywood starlets that I rate more highly than marginally spade-faced Keira Knightley, and of all late actresses I am fairly unoriginal in my fondness for Audrey Hepburn, so the rumours quite some time ago that Knightley has signed up to fill Hepburn’s shoes in a planned remake of My Fair Lady is, for me, great news. The whispers around the project died down though, until today when stories have begun circulating that Joe Wright, director of Knightley in Pride and Prejudice and the amazing Atonement, is also set to be involved. So Audrey Hepburn is back, but unlike Audrey, Keira’s vocals won’t be dubbed if her singing in last year’s The Edge of Love is anything to go by. The problem seems to be, however, whether or not any individual can ever truly succeed in a performance that has been done to perfection already, »

Well it looks like Keira Knightley really has given up on contemporary films. The 24-year-old actress is reportedly going to star in My Fair Lady, the latest adaptation from English director Joe Wright, whose other project, Indian Summer, fell apart just last week. England's Daily Telegraph reported last Friday that they had gotten word from "a friend of the director" that Wright would be directing My Fair Lady next with Knightley starring in the read role as Eliza Doolittle. This remake has been around for a while, with Scarlett Johansson also rumored for the role, but apparently it's now in Knightley's hands with Wright on-board. My Fair Lady is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaw's novel Pygmalion. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins so that she can pass as a lady. Higgins takes credit for Eliza's success, »

Just you wait Henry Higgins, just you wait. Joe Wright, director of Pride And Prejudice and Atonement, is to remake the 1960's eight-time Oscar winning film My Fair Lady. After the cancellation of Indian Summer due to budget and plot conflicts, Wright is now free to take on the family favourite that originally starred Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.
Additionally, it is looking more and more likely that Keira Knightley will play cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle after producer Duncan Kenworthy was cited saying "I think Keira would be absolutely fabulous in it". Knightley was allegedly in competition with the musically minded Scarlett Johansson.
So Knightley is looking more and more like the obvious choice for the role -a London girl, cheekbones galore and with a few singing lessons under her belt. If the casting goes ahead, let's just hope she can deliver a successful remake of a George Cukor classic. »

If this is all confirmed, this becomes a major upcoming project, one worth noting now. Keira Knightley and Joe Wright have had a very successful collaboration so far on both "Pride and Prejudice" and "Atonement," and both of them have benefitted from those successes. The two of them working together on anything becomes news by virtue of their track record together. But the two of them working together on "My Fair Lady" with a screenplay by Emma Thompson? That is news. Really, really good news. I've liked Wright more than his material so far, but I think "My Fair Lady" is a... »

Looks like the long developing new film adaptation of My Fair Lady is about to gear up again - Joe Wright has apparently signed on to direct, with Keira Knightley all but confirmed to star. According to The Telegraph, Wright has been chosen to helm the film now that he's available again following the collapse of Indian Summer, which was felled by budgetary concerns and protests by the Indian government over its storyline. Also in the story is mention of the fact that Knightley - who has been mentioned in connection with the film before -...

For those not yet accustomed enough to her face, Keira Knightley, long rumoured to be on for the role, will shortly be starring as Eliza Doolittle in a redo of My Fair Lady. She'll be re-teaming with Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice), whose Indian Summer is currently on-hold, and possibly now permanently cancelled. As you'll recall from your A Levels, My Fair Lady is the famous musical based on George Bernard Shaw's song-free Pygmalion, in which cockernee Eliza Doolittle is taken under the wing of Professor 'Enry 'Iggins, and lady-fied, for a bet. Julie Andrews made the role her own on stage, but was passed over for George Cukor's 1964 film version in favour of Audrey Hepburn, whose voice was then dubbed for the singing bits. Not so with Keira, who's been taking singing lessons, and won the role despite stiff competition from Scarlett Johansson. Emma Thompson is writing the script, »
