Empire Release their 20th Birthday Portfolio

3 December 2009 8:20 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

For the 20th anniversary edition of Empire Magazine, not only did they have Steven Spielberg as they’re guest editor and reunite The Goonies, they also did some wonderful photos of famous movie stars recreating famous scenes with a modern twist. The photos featured people like Arnold Schwarzenegger recreating his some Terminator poses, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins doing Silence of the Lambs and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost re-enacting Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Empire have now collated all these images and given them to us in a lovely gallery which shows them off properly. Some of these were available before today but now all 30 images are there.

I think I’m going to create a collage of them all because they’re too good to be kept on the Internet. They need to be displayed on a wall!

Head over to Empire to check them all out. »

2 December 2009 6:45 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

To celebrate their 20th birthday, Empire Magazine invited a whole ton of actors and actresses to ever-so-briefly reprise their most iconic roles for a pretty cool photo shoot. Curious to see what Arnold Schwarzenegger would look like now if he donned those famous black sunglasses and threw on his best badass pose for a photo in front of a motorcycle? Or what about wanting to see Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster reunited for the first time since the Oscar-winning Silence of the Lambs?

Other cool photo ops include Mel Gibson wearing face paint in honor of Braveheart, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost looking back at Shaun of the Dead, Christian Bale returning to his American Psycho days, Ben Stiller showing us all that Zoolander totally deserves a sequel, Gerard Butler giving us his best 300 roar, Laurence Fishburne calling back Morpheus and more. It's a pretty cool idea, even if Tom Cruise »

Simon Pegg's breath struggle

27 November 2009 12:00 AM, PST | Virgin Media - Movies | See recent Virgin Media - Movies news »

Simon Pegg struggled with breathing when working on 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs'. The actor loved voicing wild one-eyed weasel Buck in the animated sequel but admits he particularly found incorporating noises into his portrayal of the character difficult. He explained: ''There was a lot of yahooing, and impact noises when you are getting hit and the breathing is actually hard. When I was doing the whole sequence when he was flashing back to when he was being chased by Rudy the Dinosaur I had to do some really heavy fast breathing. You actually get pretty light headed and it's tough.'' Simon also .. »

DVD review: Ice Age 3 - Dawn of the Dinosaurs

26 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Fox, rental and retail

Even in its third helping, Ice Age retains its freshness to a remarkable degree.

This one works more satisfactorily than part two, with the addition of dinosaurs living in a lovingly realised underworld, and is nicely balanced between thrills, spills and cute critters for the kids and some witty lines for the rest of us. As ever, it's topped and tailed by Scrat's search for an acorn, a running gag and virtual Holy Grail of the series, and a nod to Tex Avery and the Warners shorts.

This series is particularly strong on background and perspective. The notable additional character is voiced by Simon Pegg – he gets in everywhere this year – as a prehistoric weasel. Series regular Carlos Saldanha is again co-director, and with this one making $196m in the Us, there may well be more to come. Smart and inventive, it compares extremely well with the tired Shrek the Third. »

Tintin Might Take Forever

24 November 2009 1:33 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Director Peter Jackson spoke about more than just The Hobbit and The Lovely Bones at a recent press conference. When asked about Steven Spielberg's movie, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which he produced, Jackson said, "Tintin is great. It's made. The movie is cut together and now [we] are turning it into a full-rendered film. So the movie to some degree, exists in a very rough state." That doesn't sound so bound until you read the part about Jackson estimating the post-production process will take two years. Two years until the world gets to see Simon Pegg, Daniel Craig, and Cary Elwes in a Tintin movie? That seems like forever.   Source: BBC »

TV plays it by the book

22 November 2009 11:44 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Broadcasters are taking the safe option by commissioning literary adaptations that guarantee an audience

"In these difficult times there's a little more security in adapting a book than in commissioning an original script," says Liza Marshall, head of drama at Channel 4 and soon to be head of film and TV at Ridley Scott's production company, Scott Free. "Although you couldn't run your drama department purely from the bookshop, books do have an epic scope and a strong author's vision which can really help a channel in tough times."

The rest of the TV industry seems to agree. The next six months sees the small screen looking like a branch of Borders. Sky1 is filming Chris Ryan's Sas thriller Strike Back for transmission next April, alongside a version of Terry Pratchett's Going Postal. The second of its Martina Cole adaptations, The Graft, goes out next summer, while David Morrissey »

Fan Film Friday: Bill Hader’s ‘Bad Lieutenant’

For those getting ready for Nicolas Cage’s version of 1992’s Bad Lieutenant, they should do two things. One: check out our review of the new film before they decide to buy a ticket, and two: check out this amazing video that SNL’s Bill Hader and Mean Magazine put together about a year ago when the remake was first announced.

Hader is currently one of the “Not Ready For Primetime Players” on Saturday Night Live, but he’s also one of the more popular character actors of the past few years. Most will remember him as one of the officers from Superbad, the Shaman in Year One or the park owner in Adventureland. His next big role will be alongside Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Paul.

SciFriday: Why The Coincidences Of 'Star Trek' Worked

19 November 2009 8:45 PM, PST | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in this year's blockbuster hit "Star Trek," had some great thoughts to share about his role recently on Twitter. Besides praising the writing work of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and adding the great directorial work of J.J. Abrams, Pegg also addressed something that has been a concern of some fans since the film's release last May: There's an awful lot of coincidence. "I love that Scotty shows up late," Pegg said on Twitter. "The film is about fate. About time healing itself. He's furthest away, and yet he is found. Some have questioned the coincidences, but they are the point. Destiny is stronger than time and circumstance. The crew are supposed to unite." Since the film was released, this is a column I have tried to write, but usually something ... »

Edgar Wright's 'Times' Complaint, Tom Cruise And Justin Bieber In Today's Twitter-Wood

For the record, I always link back to the source and cite everyone's tweets that I use from the Twitter-Wood follow list, including Edgar Wright. That's more than can be said for an edited version of an Edward Woodward memorial he wrote on his blog that showed up in edited form on the Times website, though, according to his posts today.

I do make a minimal number of edits, such as the f-bomb in Ice-t's Twitter Pic of the Day winner today, which was followed by yet another Brett Ratner/Michael Jackson pic. You need see that one for the giant wig along. Check it all out after the jump along with a "New Moon" cast shot from Gil Birmingham, Alyson Hannigan's musical Joss Whedon nostalgia and Jamie Campbell Bower's befuddlement over Justin Bieber. Rob Liefeld's 'Twilight' Connection And Brian Bendis' 'Thor' Set Visit In Today's Twitter Report

The last 24 hours have been exciting for comics-related movie watchers on Twitter. Not only did some behind-the-scenes posts pop up from "Thor" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," two of the biggest upcoming releases in the genre, but Rob Liefeld dropped an eye-opening bomb about his defunct "Badrock" film — which he says almost happened in 1996 with "Twilight Saga: New Moon" director Chris Weitz.

Aside from those tweets, there's also a pretty spectacular Terry Moore Spider-Man sketch waiting after the jump. Check that out, along with Tony Moore's answer to fanboy hate, Simon Pegg's thoughts on Scotty in "Star Trek" and a prediction for the English language from Jeffrey Rowland.

The rebirth of Khan: should he be played by an unknown in Star Trek 2?

19 November 2009 9:19 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Rumours abound that Jj Abrams - if he is to helm the revamped Enterprise's second outing - will cast Lost hunk Nestor Carbonell in the role made famous by Ricardo Montalban. Is that playing too safe?

Directors have their favourites. Follow David Lynch on his latest journey to Planet Weird and you'll probably find Laura Dern landed some time before you; pick up a Sam Raimi flick and don't be surprised if he's found some way to shoehorn in Bruce Campbell.

One of the things about last year's Star Trek revamp that impressed me most was that Jj Abrams didn't fall back on tried and tested actors from his previous ventures to populate the bridge of the USS Enterprise. Sure, there was Simon Pegg, who starred in the director's debut movie in charge, Mission Impossible 3, and Zoe Saldana from his Bad Robot production company's TV series Six Degrees. But Chris Pine was a near unknown, »

Edward Woodward Dies Age 79

Yesterday cinema lost one of its true greats. After a long battle with a series of illnesses including pneumonia Edward Woodwardpassed away at Truro hospital in Cornwall surrounded by his beloved family.

Edward Woodward was born on June 1st 1930 in Croydon and enjoyed initial success on the small screen. In 1967 he starred in “Callan” a TV series that ran up until 1972. He played a world-weary assassin for the S.I.S. and showed the world a glimpse of how he could handle the brooding intensity that was to become his trademark.

1973 saw him take the role he will be best remembered for when he starred as Sergeant Howie in the seminal cult horror film The Wicker Man.

His performance as the young, straight-laced, intensely religious copper ranks among the best in the world. He gave a performance so haunting that it was forever burned into the soul of every film lover worldwide. »

'Star Trek' Gets Re-Energized on Blu-ray

16 November 2009 9:45 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Franchise reboots have become a go-to moneymaker for Hollywood in the past few decades. Find a popular, but overexposed series of films that has all but breathed its last breath. Add a new cast of pretty, bankable faces, updated and explosive special effects and a script that toes the line between tribute and parody, stir, and hope audiences will show up for the results. But nine times out of ten, a franchise reboot pales in comparison to the original and succeeds at little but making the audience long for the movies they initially loved. Thankfully, J.J. Abrams' reboot of the 'Star Trek' saga avoids all of these pitfalls and emerges as a smart, fun and original version of the world of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Star Trek starts from the very beginning as George Kirk is named captain of the Enterprise for 12 minutes before a tragic »
