Move Over 'Paranormal Activity' - Here Comes 'Blair Witch 3'

2 November 2009 5:01 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Looking to literally re-capitalize on a filmmaking style they re-invented back in 1999, The Blair Witch Project writer-directors, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, are this close to returning to the big screen with another Blair Witch installment – one that could potentially reunite the original film's stars, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. Speaking to the Toronto Star, Sanchez says that the new film would forget Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows ever happened (thank god), and it would pick up right where the original left off. He adds, "We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it." Considering the smash success of Paranormal...

'Paranormal Activity' Success Spurs 'Blair Witch' Sequel Chatter

2 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Big shock there, right? A decade after the release of "The Blair Witch Project," we have director Oren Peli's found-footage supernatural thriller "Paranormal Activity" setting Hollywood ablaze with an record setting box office performance in comparison to its miniscule, sub-$15,000 budget. So it's no wonder that the "Blair Witch" creators, in many ways the progenitors of this sort of phenomenon, are looking to bring it back home to their original success story.

We heard back in August from co-directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick that "Blair Witch 3" talk was happening, but Sanchez spoke to The Star last week a little more about how those talks are shaping up so far (via Latino Review).

"We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now," Sanchez explained. "It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it."

Pack Your Rucksacks For Blair Witch 3

1 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

No great surprise this, but with zero-budget word-of-mouth horror phenomenon Paranormal Activity cleaning up at the box office, the creator of a certain other zero-budget word-of-mouth horror phenomenon from a decade ago, is talking a revisit. Anyone for Blair Witch 3?"I wouldn't be completely honest if I said I wasn't jealous of Paranormal Activity," Eduardo Sanchez, co-creator of The Blair Witch Project (along with Daniel Myrick) tells the Toronto Star. "There's the feeling that, I could have done this... I know how to make these films. To me it's like, man, maybe I should go back and kind of milk this one more time."The original Blair Witch, as any fule kno, took Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C Williams and a camcorder, dumped them in the woods to improvise, and scared the crap out of them for a week. The resulting film, presented as the found footage of a group of missing hikers, »

'Blair Witch' Sequel Now Seems Very Likely

31 October 2009 9:40 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

A couple times this year, the subject of a proper Blair Witch Project sequel has been mentioned, and creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez have even chimed in on it. Now, with the success of Paranormal Activity, a Blair Witch 3 - which would positively ignore that Book of Shadows even exists - looks closer to becoming a reality than ever.

Speaking to The Toronto Star, Sánchez says, "We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it." If it's the same Lionsgate I think it is, I'd say there's a slim chance this would get squashed.

According to the writer-director, the film would pick up where the first one left off, whatever that means. I don't want to give anything away, but...some key characters didn't make it. Sánchez »

Eduardo Sanchez to Pitch The Blair Witch Project Sequel

31 October 2009 9:13 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It seems that the success of the box office phenomenon Paranormal Activity has kickstarted the efforts the pioneering indie filmmakers a decade before them. The Toronto Star recently spoke with The Blair Witch Project co-director Eduardo Sanchez, who revealed that he and co-director Daniel Myrick are readying The Blair Witch Project 3. Here's an excerpt from the article.

They're now at the point where they're ready to do a Blair Witch 3, once again sharing writing and directing. They'd pick up from where the original left off, pretending Blair Witch 2 never happened. The duo recently went on a drive through their original Blair Witch haunts, about a half hour from S&#225nchez's Maryland home, looking for inspiration.

They've worked up a treatment for a new story, which would involve original cast members Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, albeit in smaller roles.

The Blair Witch Project: Ten Years On – Part 1

28 October 2009 5:01 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Halloween is upon us! Ten years ago this week, to coincide with Halloween, The Blair Witch Project was released in the UK. Combine that fact with the recent release of the Blair-like Paranormal Activity, and it’s clearly the perfect time to take a look back at the original shaky-cam horror movie.

Today, i’m going to look at how Blair Witch became a cultural phenomenon at the time, tomorrow take a look at the movie itself, and on Saturday will discuss how it’s influence is still felt by the industry today.

The Nineties were somewhat of a boon time for low budget independent film. With Kevin Smith’s huge Clerks success, and a whole raft of Tarantino wannabes putting together their own gangster tales, everyone felt like they could become the next big thing.

In 1993, two filmmakers, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, came up with the concept for »

Humpday's Joshua Leonard Is Telling A Lie

16 October 2009 6:18 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

In this year's Humpday Joshua Leonard played the kind of character who reminds office drones of what they're missing, a 30-year-old vagabond living a life of travel and adventure and sex, rather than the monotonous but maybe more content life his old friend (played by Mark Duplass) has built for himself. But it seems Leonard will be slipping into the other role in The Lie, an indie he will direct based on T.C. Boyle's short story that ran in The New Yorker last year (you can read the full story online here). According to Variety Leonard adapted the story with Jess Weixler and Mark Webber, both of whom will star in the film as well. Jane Adams, Kelli Garner, P.J. Ransone, Gerry Bednob and Kirk Baltz will round out the cast as well. The original story is pretty slim on plot and characters, and presumably Leonard and company »

Joshua Leonard To Direct The Lie

15 October 2009 11:36 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The last time Joshua Leonard stepped behind the camera, it caused quite a stir. That, of course, was on The Blair Witch Project when he played one of the three ill-fated student filmmakers who tangled with the eponymous menace.A decade on, and Leonard is ready to go behind the camera again, this time for real, on the indie drama, The Lie.The movie is based on a short story, written by T.C. Boyle, that appeared in The New Yorker, about a man who changes his life when he lies in order to get out of work. Sounds a little like The Invention of Lying – let’s hope that Leonard’s film hits the mark that Ricky Gervais’ appalling comedy missed so spectacularly.Leonard, who finally buried the Blair Witch curse this year by starring in the acclaimed indie comedy, Humpday (and the HBO show, Hung), will also star in the movie, »

Exclusive: Blair Witch 10th Anniversary Q&A

24 August 2009 12:08 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

On August 20th Hollywood's historic Egyptian Theatre hosted a 10th anniversary screening of The Blair Witch Project followed by a Q&A with several members of the film's cast and crew. Of course Dread Central was there, camera in-hand, to record the auspicious occasion.

Taking part in the evening's festivities were co-writer and co-director Dan Myrick, cast members Joshua Leonard and Heather Donahue, production designer Ben Rock, and producers Robin Cowie and Michael Monello. On its surface the film told the story of three student filmmakers who in October of 1994 disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary...A year later their footage was found. But it was so much more than that. It was lightning in a bottle that, through a viral marketing campaign that will probably never be duplicated, set the standard for the cinéma-vérité experience.

Blair Witch 3?

12 August 2009 8:17 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

A few weeks ago Entertainment Weekly did a 10-year anniversary "Where Are They Now?" piece on the people behind The Blair Witch Project, which had you all scared and maybe-sorta believing it was real this time in the summer of '99. The actors have either quit Hollywood or found modest success (Josh Leonard was in this summer's indie hit Humpday), but as for the filmmakers, it's been a whole lot of nothin'. But wait! They still have their brilliant original idea to cling to, which is apparently exactly what they're about to do. In a retrospective piece at BBC.co.uk directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez said they are in the process of making a third Blair Witch, though probably one bearing little relation to the sequel that the two of them had nothing to do with. Says Sanchez, "Ideally, each Blair Witch film would be a completely different »

'Blair Witch Project' Sequel Talk... This Time, From The Directors!

12 August 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It’s been ten years since “The Blair Witch Project” exploded onto movie screens and into the pop culture history books. Yet as big a phenomenon as that groundbreaking and highly influential horror film was, writer/directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick have failed to follow it in the past decade with something equally compelling. The pair spoke to BBC News recently about the film’s anniversary -- it opened in the UK in October 1999 -- and they mentioned plans for another sequel to their hit debut.

Could a “Blair Witch 3” bring the duo back into the limelight though? Sanchez and Myrick received executive producer credit on the very disappointing sequel “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2,” but they can’t be blamed for how bad that installment turned out. Perhaps they have some good ideas for what to do with a third film?

'Humpday'

5 August 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Talk about testing a friendship. In Lynn Shelton’s Humpday, two college buddies are reunited and soon, via a drunken dare, decide to film themselves having sex, though both men are straight and no latent attraction exists between them. Hilarity ensues, right? Well, yes and no.

While the plot of Humpday is undeniably titillating, its themes and observations are utterly serious—and seriously funny. Writer/Director Shelton (who also appears in a small but pivotal role) scored critical points with last year’s My Effortless Brilliance, another Indie of the "Mumblecore" variety that examined male friendship. For whatever reason, she’s really nailed (pardon the pun) this particular corner of the relationship universe. Shelton’s observations about male bonding rituals and their attending insecurities are of a rare quality; in short, they feel totally true. She’s able to capture that truth in beautifully awkward, small moments, without obvious gags or punchlines. »

Indie-Tech: ‘Bitter Feast’ Takes Lo-Fi to a New Low

We're sitting on a screener of the indie horror flick I Sell The Dead here at Reject HQ, but only because we're waiting for a dark and stormy night to break that shit out. Called the ScareFlix series (the brainchild of producer Larry Fessenden), the latest in the series might just be a groundbreaking film, and not just by ridiculously-low-budget indie horror thrill film standards. Joe Maggio (Paper Covers Rock) has written and directed his first genre film, Bitter Feast, starring Joshua Leonard (of indie staff favorite Humpday) and James LeGros (The Last Winter). Making the movie for $16.50 and a pack of Jujubees, Bitter Feast is the first feature to be shot on a Dslr camera. As far as anyone knows. (And recording over your little brother's junior high graduation with your girlfriend's drunken rendition of "The Humpty Dance" doesn't count. Beautiful Losers is released on August 7th in the UK.

Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a

generation. In the early 1990s a loose-knit group of like-minded outsiders found common ground at a little

NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the Diy (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop

& graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence

from the “establishment” art world, this group and the subcultures they sprang from have now become a

movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Quickcard Review

Humpday

Directed by: Lynn Shelton

Cast: Mark Duplass, Joshua Leonard, Alycia Delmore, Lynn Shelton

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: July 31, 2009 (Portland)

Plot: It’s been a decade since Ben (Duplass) and Andrew (Leonard) were in college. Ben has settled down and found a job, wife (Delmore), and home. Andrew took the alternate route as a vagabond artist. One drunk night leads to the idea of making “art” by taping two straight guys having sex … with each other.

Who’s It For? Looking for a conversation flick that tackles some new ground? You’ve come to the right place.

Expectations: Based on the poster (my only knowledge of the film) I decided I was sitting down to a movie about to homosexuals who pretty much had the personalities of two straight guys … and one had a big beard.

Overall

Oh indie films (happy sigh). There are »
