Humpday takes bromance love to the next level | Ben Walters

Are you man enough for a little man-on-man action? Lynn Shelton's film Humpday pushes the boundaries of the buddy movie right over the line

You might have noticed that films about guys have been getting pretty

gay lately. Of course, homosociality has underpinned many Hollywood genres from the off – gangster movies, war movies and buddy movies all thrive on men appreciating each other's manliness – and the American classics are studded with such adorable couples as Felix and Oscar, Butch and Sundance, and Ratso and Joe. But over the past few years, the sap has been rising.

If 2005's Brokeback Mountain didn't exactly open the floodgates to a mainstream queer romance cycle – the tantalising trailer for Satan's Alley embedded in Tropic Thunder notwithstanding – it ushered in some notable toe-dipping. The comedies of the Judd Apatow stable are full of male bonding that revels in pseudo-sodomitic signifiers, especially Superbad and Pineapple Express »

Predictions 2010 Sundance Film Festival: Agrelo, D'Arienzo, Gibney

What do docs The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and Mad Hat Ballroom have in common? DVD Review: ‘Humpday’ Takes Heterosexual Comedy to a New Level

24 November 2009 7:40 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – While Apatowian bromances like “I Love You, Man” play male bonding for laughs, Lynn Shelton’s perceptive indie comedy delves into the untapped complexities of brotherly love. After garnering the Special Jury Prize at Sundance, “Humpday” had a very limited theatrical run, and deserves to find an audience on DVD. It is one of the best micro-budget indies to fall under the media-created genre definition of “mumblecore.” These films examine the sex lives and relationships of ordinary twenty- and thirty-somethings with a level of candid intimacy rarely achieved in mainstream filmmaking.

DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0

Shelton is one of the few “mumblecore” filmmakers who attempts to bridge her improvisational scenes with a strong narrative arc (the Duplass Brothers made a similar successful effort in “The Puffy Chair”). In “Humpday,” Mark Duplass (currently on FX’s “The League”) stars as Ben, a young man on the verge of starting a family with »

Blair Witch Remake Is Probably Not What It Seems

23 November 2009 12:50 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

A casting notice for a film called The Blair Witch Remake would seem to suggest, obviously enough, that The Blair Witch Project is being remade, but a close look at the circumstances raises a few questions. The characters listed are Dennis Hither, Michael Adams, Donald Walker and Allison James as opposed to Heather Donahue, Josh Leonard and Mike Williams. What's more, the female role is apparently not one of the filmmakers this time around, with Dennis listed as the main role. I'll put the full casting notices after the break. Another question mark hovers over the use of the Blair Witch name. I'd be very surprised if Lionsgate, who hold the rights to any sequels, would allow another film to pitch up on their turf like that. We know that Myrick and Sanchez have recently been talking about a third Blair Witch film... could this possibly be it? I'm pretty »

Lynn Shelton Presents Even Gayer Humpday Semi-Sequel

17 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

It was a rough summer for a lot of worthy indie films, and one of the worthiest -- Lynn Shelton's shaggy, surprising mumblecore farce Humpday -- didn't manage to find an audience commensurate with its buzz. The comedy is being released on DVD today, and to mark the occasion, Shelton's made available a short film inspired by it. This time, instead of watching straight dudes Mark Duplass and Josh Leonard attempt a bedroom encounter, a gay man and a lesbian have the unlikely honors. »

“Beyond Gay”: Presenting Lynn Shelton’s “Sequel” to “Humpday”

Last summer, as Lynn Shelton’s Sundance fave “Humpday” was about to open in theaters, Dan Savage, the founder of Seattle amateur porn festival “Hump!” called out Shelton on his blog. “He demanded that I show Hump! some love because, as he pointed out, without the existence of Hump!, there would have been no ‘Humpday,’” Shelton told indieWIRE today. “I had to agree.” “Humpday” follows two heterosexual guys (played by Joshua Leonard … »

Another Blair Witch Might be in the Works

14 November 2009 10:08 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

After the incredible success of the ultra-low budget Paranormal Activity sparked sequel rumors, the co-creator of the original "shakycam" success, The Blair Witch Project, Eduardo Sánchez, emerged to talk about the possibility of making another Blair Witch.

Sánchez and co-creator Daniel Myrick declined to work on Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 because they "didn't want to be seen as one-trick ponies, but Sánchez admits to being "jealous" of Paranormal Activity and its creator, Oren Peli.

I'm happy for the guy ... but at the same time, there's the feeling that, man, I could have done this. It would have been different and might not have been as good. But I know how to make these films. To me it's like, man, maybe I should go back and kind of milk this one more time.

And, apparently, Sánchez and Myrick do plan to reunite on another Blair Witch movie, though it »

Move Over 'Paranormal Activity' - Here Comes 'Blair Witch 3'

2 November 2009 5:01 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Looking to literally re-capitalize on a filmmaking style they re-invented back in 1999, The Blair Witch Project writer-directors, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, are this close to returning to the big screen with another Blair Witch installment – one that could potentially reunite the original film's stars, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. Speaking to the Toronto Star, Sanchez says that the new film would forget Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows ever happened (thank god), and it would pick up right where the original left off. He adds, "We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it." Considering the smash success of Paranormal...

'Paranormal Activity' Success Spurs 'Blair Witch' Sequel Chatter

2 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Big shock there, right? A decade after the release of "The Blair Witch Project," we have director Oren Peli's found-footage supernatural thriller "Paranormal Activity" setting Hollywood ablaze with an record setting box office performance in comparison to its miniscule, sub-$15,000 budget. So it's no wonder that the "Blair Witch" creators, in many ways the progenitors of this sort of phenomenon, are looking to bring it back home to their original success story.

We heard back in August from co-directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick that "Blair Witch 3" talk was happening, but Sanchez spoke to The Star last week a little more about how those talks are shaping up so far (via Latino Review).

"We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now," Sanchez explained. "It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it."

Pack Your Rucksacks For Blair Witch 3

1 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

No great surprise this, but with zero-budget word-of-mouth horror phenomenon Paranormal Activity cleaning up at the box office, the creator of a certain other zero-budget word-of-mouth horror phenomenon from a decade ago, is talking a revisit. Anyone for Blair Witch 3?"I wouldn't be completely honest if I said I wasn't jealous of Paranormal Activity," Eduardo Sanchez, co-creator of The Blair Witch Project (along with Daniel Myrick) tells the Toronto Star. "There's the feeling that, I could have done this... I know how to make these films. To me it's like, man, maybe I should go back and kind of milk this one more time."The original Blair Witch, as any fule kno, took Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C Williams and a camcorder, dumped them in the woods to improvise, and scared the crap out of them for a week. The resulting film, presented as the found footage of a group of missing hikers, »

'Blair Witch' Sequel Now Seems Very Likely

31 October 2009 9:40 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

A couple times this year, the subject of a proper Blair Witch Project sequel has been mentioned, and creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez have even chimed in on it. Now, with the success of Paranormal Activity, a Blair Witch 3 - which would positively ignore that Book of Shadows even exists - looks closer to becoming a reality than ever.

Speaking to The Toronto Star, Sánchez says, "We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it." If it's the same Lionsgate I think it is, I'd say there's a slim chance this would get squashed.

According to the writer-director, the film would pick up where the first one left off, whatever that means. I don't want to give anything away, but...some key characters didn't make it. Sánchez »

Eduardo Sanchez to Pitch The Blair Witch Project Sequel

31 October 2009 9:13 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It seems that the success of the box office phenomenon Paranormal Activity has kickstarted the efforts the pioneering indie filmmakers a decade before them. The Toronto Star recently spoke with The Blair Witch Project co-director Eduardo Sanchez, who revealed that he and co-director Daniel Myrick are readying The Blair Witch Project 3. Here's an excerpt from the article.

They're now at the point where they're ready to do a Blair Witch 3, once again sharing writing and directing. They'd pick up from where the original left off, pretending Blair Witch 2 never happened. The duo recently went on a drive through their original Blair Witch haunts, about a half hour from S&#225nchez's Maryland home, looking for inspiration.

They've worked up a treatment for a new story, which would involve original cast members Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, albeit in smaller roles.

The Blair Witch Project: Ten Years On – Part 1

28 October 2009 5:01 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Halloween is upon us! Ten years ago this week, to coincide with Halloween, The Blair Witch Project was released in the UK. Combine that fact with the recent release of the Blair-like Paranormal Activity, and it’s clearly the perfect time to take a look back at the original shaky-cam horror movie.

Today, i’m going to look at how Blair Witch became a cultural phenomenon at the time, tomorrow take a look at the movie itself, and on Saturday will discuss how it’s influence is still felt by the industry today.

The Nineties were somewhat of a boon time for low budget independent film. With Kevin Smith’s huge Clerks success, and a whole raft of Tarantino wannabes putting together their own gangster tales, everyone felt like they could become the next big thing.

In 1993, two filmmakers, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, came up with the concept for »

Humpday's Joshua Leonard Is Telling A Lie

16 October 2009 6:18 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

In this year's Humpday Joshua Leonard played the kind of character who reminds office drones of what they're missing, a 30-year-old vagabond living a life of travel and adventure and sex, rather than the monotonous but maybe more content life his old friend (played by Mark Duplass) has built for himself. But it seems Leonard will be slipping into the other role in The Lie, an indie he will direct based on T.C. Boyle's short story that ran in The New Yorker last year (you can read the full story online here). According to Variety Leonard adapted the story with Jess Weixler and Mark Webber, both of whom will star in the film as well. Jane Adams, Kelli Garner, P.J. Ransone, Gerry Bednob and Kirk Baltz will round out the cast as well. The original story is pretty slim on plot and characters, and presumably Leonard and company »

Joshua Leonard To Direct The Lie

15 October 2009 11:36 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The last time Joshua Leonard stepped behind the camera, it caused quite a stir. That, of course, was on The Blair Witch Project when he played one of the three ill-fated student filmmakers who tangled with the eponymous menace.A decade on, and Leonard is ready to go behind the camera again, this time for real, on the indie drama, The Lie.The movie is based on a short story, written by T.C. Boyle, that appeared in The New Yorker, about a man who changes his life when he lies in order to get out of work. Sounds a little like The Invention of Lying – let’s hope that Leonard’s film hits the mark that Ricky Gervais’ appalling comedy missed so spectacularly.Leonard, who finally buried the Blair Witch curse this year by starring in the acclaimed indie comedy, Humpday (and the HBO show, Hung), will also star in the movie, »
