Crazy Heart Bumped to December Release

6 November 2009 5:23 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

It seems that Fox Searchlight, desperate to have at least one film out by the end of the year (looks like they oddly don’t have enough on their plate this season) will be bumping Crazy Heart up to a December 16 release date. It’s a little romantic drama of sorts, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and the omnipresent Jeff Bridges, alongside Robert Duvall.

Written and directed by actor Scott Cooper, Crazy Heart centers around “the story of boozing and broken-down country singer Bad Blake (Bridges), who finds redemption with the help of a young journalist (Gyllenhaal).” I don’t know about you, but it would be refreshing to see Bridges not play alcoholics so often in his latter years. He’s becoming sort of typecast.

Crazy Heart was originally a novel by Thomas Cobb, so if you’re interested, check that out!

Fox Searchlight's Oscar hopeful 'Crazy Heart' gets a release date

5 November 2009 5:01 PM, PST | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

Fox Searchlight, the studio arm behind last year's Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire, must have had a terrific last-minute screening of their country music-themed acquisition Crazy Heart starring Jeff Bridges. The studio has settled on the release date of Dec. 16 after quickly putting together a last-minute press viewing of their film yesterday in Los Angeles. The studio acquired the movie back in July from writer-director Scott Cooper. It centers on Bad Blake (Bridges), a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who has had too many marriages, too many years on the road and too many drinks. He reaches out to Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal »

Fox Searchlight Jumps 'Crazy Heart' Into Oscar Season

4 November 2009 6:47 AM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By the Los Angeles Times

We knew Fox Searchlight was in love with "Crazy Heart," the low-budget country music drama that stars Jeff Bridges as a faded, booze-fueled singer named Bad Blake who's trying to get his career back on track. Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Scott Cooper, the film costars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Robert Duvall and Colin Farrell.

Searchlight acquired the film in July, taking it off the market with a low seven-figure bid, enamored by the film's acting and nuanced storytelling. Its original plan was to release the movie in the spring of 2010. But Searchlight is now plann... »

Prince Gyllenhaal

3 November 2009 3:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

One of the things I've never quite understood about videogames turned movies is how you're supposed to play them.

But I miss Jake Gyllenhaal so here he is all acrobatic like in The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

More Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Info

I haven't yet read any internet opinions about this new trailer, so haven't a clue what the consensus is but if it's hugely negative, I'm here to say that that's just silly. This looks exactly like the other video games turned movies (Tomb Raider) or movies that seem like they're based on video games even when they're not (The Mummy... or wait, was that?). They're all marketed in this same bombastic way with loud music, "fun" bits and CGI heavy promises of spectacle. Though I can't remember offhand if most trailers for films of this genre spend this much time describing »

Katie Holmes Replaces Liv Tyler in 'The Romantics'

2 November 2009 10:33 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Not too long ago, Katie Holmes was the one getting ousted. After romancing Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, she was set aside so Maggie Gyllenhaal could whip up a much more spot-on Rachel Dawes. Now it's her time to take over a role. It might not be part of a well-established franchise, but Variety reports that Holmes will be replacing Liv Tyler in the romantic comedy The Romantics.

As I wrote when Tyler signed on for the project, this film sees Galt Niederhoffer adapting and directing from her own novel, which focuses on a group of college friends who reunite after 6 years for a wedding. The event brings up a rivalry between the groom, the bride, and her maid of honor. Anna Paquin is playing the bride, Josh Duhamel is the groom, and Holmes is stepping in as maid of honor. (Other cast include Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, »

Red Carpet: Underworked, Overworked, Erratically Co-Worked

27 October 2009 4:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Did you miss red carpet lineup? Too bad, it's back anyway! Here's a random sampling of celebrities who've been working the red this past week. As always, it's chosen based on who I wanna talk about.

I didn't used to think much of Eva Green, who was looking smashing in movie star red in London for the premiere of her new film Cracks, but two things changed my mind. First, her chemistry with Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and two, the shot of her flying through the air in The Golden Compass. I'm sad we'll never see more of witchy Serafina Pekkala. The further we get away from that movie the more I'm bummed that it didn't quite work. The book was so terrific but studios and filmmakers should never take on source material that's bolder than they are (this is one of the many reasons that Peter Jackson's »

First Look: Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang Trailer

19 October 2009 10:42 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Remember when the first Nanny McPhee hit theatres back in 2005? Friends, family, colleagues, everyone kept telling me how fantastic the film was. Me being me however, I dismissed it as a silly family movie…that is up until I finally caught it on Sky Movies in 2006.

Continuing on from that first, fantastic installment is Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang – and it looks like the series has lost none of it’s charm!

In Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, Oscar®-winning actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson returns to the role of the magical nanny who appears when she’s needed the most and wanted the least in the next chapter of the hilarious and heartwarming fable that has enchanted children around the world. In the latest installment, Nanny McPhee appears at the door of a harried young mother, Mrs. Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who is trying to run the »

Actor Peter Sarsgaard once had his heart broken after driving from New York to North Carolina to surprise a girlfriend on Valentine's Day.

Now happily married to actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, the Boys Don't Cry star recalls presenting a former love with a short story he had written for her only to discover she'd met someone else.

The actor tells WENN, "I was at Bard College. It was around eight o'clock at night and Valentine's Day was the next day. I drove all the way down to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill through the night and arrived in the morning.

"I showed up on this girl's front step and I had written a short story to read to her, which was slightly ripped off from another writer.

"A guy who played for Unc Chapel Hill was there with her; he was a very large gentleman and that was her new boyfriend.

"I took off and went to a Tears For Fears concert and wept all the way through it." »

Actor Peter Sarsgaard is hoping to move away from his wife Maggie Gyllenhaal's native New York - insisting the couple should raise its family in a quieter city.

The longterm couple wed in May and share a home in Brooklyn, where they raise three-year-old daughter Ramona.

However, Illinois-born Sarsgaard admits as their little girl grows older he's more keen for a change of pace - in his personal and professional lives.

He tells the New York Post, "Down the line, maybe someday I'd like to live in the Pacific Northwest. Trees, water, fewer people. And write. I'd like to write fiction." »

Gyllenhaal's Baby Girl Felt Homesick In London

7 October 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Maggie Gyllenhaal is carefully considering future film roles after her two-year-old daughter grew homesick in London while she was shooting Nanny McPhee And The Big Bang.

The Secretary star has been loving living in the British capital with husband Peter Sarsgaard while filming the family movie but her little girl Ramona was desperately missing New York.

She says, "When you're pregnant, people love giving advice. And the advice that I have the most disdain for is, 'Oh, kids are so adaptable. Just throw them on your back and take them wherever you want. They will manage.' I brought my daughter to London for four months and she is happy here, we have had a great time here, but she wakes up in the morning and says, 'Mama, I miss Brooklyn.'

"I think, yes, it is hard to be two and all of a sudden be in a totally new place. It's very different to being 31 and doing that. The thing is, children are adaptable. They will manage, I believe, but always at a cost." »

An Education From Oliver Stone

From left: An Education star Carey Mulligan and Maggie GyllenhaalLast night, after the New York premiere of An Education, Oliver Stone asked me what I thought of Carey Mulligan's hair. As Jenny, the precocious English schoolgirl she plays in Lone Scherfig's film, Mulligan wore her hair long and dark, but she had since cut it pixie-short and dyed it red. Stone has cast her in Wall Street 2, which is currently filming in Manhattan. Having seen her triumphant performance at Sundance in An Education (which took home that festival's top award), Stone had no doubt that she could act, but he was curious to know what people would make of the 'do she'll have in his film. "Some people say it looks like Audrey Hepburn," said Stone, "but it's more Shirley MacLaine" in The Apartment. It was Maggie Gyllenhaal who reccomended that Mulligan chop it all off. Away We Go Blu-ray Review

29 September 2009 9:13 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Upon finishing Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road (2008) it felt like the life had been drained out of me. While impeccably produced and acted, the film is so emotionally heavy and unrelentingly depressing, I am relieved there was not a firearm or straight razor within arm's reach during viewing. I have the utmost respect for the caliber of the work but should it be so painful to endure? Almost as an anecdote, the director churned out the indie flick Away We Go (2009) within six months that is a total reversal in tone from his previous effort. Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are unmarried and awaiting the birth of their first child when surprised by the news that his parents are leaving the country for two years with the kicker that they are departing before the due date. Since Verona's folks are deceased (which is part of the reason she »
