It has been mentioned before over the past month or so that Jeff Bridges is going the Robert Duvall route with his new film, Crazy Heart. After three Oscar nominations in ten years, Duvall finally triumphed playing a country singer in Tender Mercies. He's since gone on to two more nominations, giving him five in all.
Bridges is vying for nomination number five with Crazy Heart, and since the movie was picked up by Fox Searchlight, his name has been consistently thrown in the Best Actor race. What we hope is that he's in the running on the strength of his performance rather than a wide open Best Actor category and a heaping helping of sentimentality.
Curiously enough, Duvall also co-stars in Crazy Heart, and you can see two of the finer examplars of American film acting in one of the following clips, a video collection that also includes Bridges »

Opening December 16th is Fox Searchlight’s Crazy Heart. If you haven’t heard about the film…it’s understandable. Originally scheduled for release next year, Fox Searchlight has mounted an impressive last minute campaign to get the film into theaters this year as they’re trying to get Jeff Bridges his long deserved Oscar.
But let me back up a second. First, you might want to read the synopsis:
Jeff Bridges stars as the richly comic, semi-tragic romantic anti-hero Bad Blake in the debut feature film Crazy Heart from writer-director Scott Cooper. Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. »

Is there hope for Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon's relationship? Amid reports of "are they or aren't they still a couple," Gyllenhaal, 28, used the buzz word of the week - girlfriend - shortly after arriving at a Beverly Hills Hotel suite Thursday for a press conference for his new film Brothers. "I've learned so much from the kids in my life, and somehow they just become the center of your life and the way you look at things," he told Grazia Australia, referring to his 3-year-old niece Ramona (daughter of Maggie Gyllenhaal) and possibly Witherspoon's children, Ava, 10, and Deacon, »

Maggie Gyllenhaal knows she and her husband, Peter Sarsgaard, aren't big-money targets for the paparazzi. In fact, they could come face-to-face with a pack of shutterbugs and still go unnoticed. It happened earlier this year when Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard were in a café during a break from rehearsing for their off-Broadway production of Uncle Vanya. "There were a ton of paparazzi in the café with their huge cameras and laptops," Gyllenhaal tells me while sitting in a Beverly Hills hotel room, where she's holed up doing press for her new flick, Crazy Heart. This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.
First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.
Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.
Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...
The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

Things have been happening recently in the Oscar race that has my head spinning, and primarily because several films I have yet to see continue to change their status.
Just yesterday I mentioned how I forgot to add Sandra Bullock's performance from The Blind Side to the Best Actress prediction race only to have one reader remind me Marion Cotillard's performance in Nine has been moved from Supporting to Lead and Natalie Portman's performance in Brothers has moved from contention in Lead to Supporting.
I have also updated the charts by adding Maggie Gyllenhaal's Crazy Heart performance to the Best Actress charts along with Michelle Monaghan's performance in Trucker.
Now, other than The Blind Side and Trucker, I haven't seen Brother, Nine or Crazy Heart, which is a large reason these continue to escape me, but I think I have things pretty much squared away now. »

It looks like Oprah is trading in her Angel Network for something a bit more seedy. The media mogul is teaming with HBO to executive produce the pilot for a series described by Variety as “a sexually charged hour-long series pilot about a woman who leaves her seemingly perfect marriage and children in Santa Monica for the underbelly of L.A., where she indulges her secret fantasies and desires.”
The pilot will be written by Erin Cressida Wilson, the genius behind 2002’s Secretary, in which Maggie Gyllenhaal was hired on as James Spader's sexually submissive office worker. For those of you who haven’t seen it, rent it. Of course, be forewarned that anything starring James Spader within the last 10 to 15 years will most certainly be twisted.
Erin has also written for Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus and Chloe.

The first trailer for Jeff Bridges led drama “Crazy Heart,” has arrived online.
Jeff Bridges (Bad Blake), “Crazy Heart” Photo
“Crazy Heart” plot: Bridges plays Bad Blake, a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. Gyllenhaal is being campaigned in the lead actress category, though it’s likely Bridges (and the film’s original music by T-Bone Burnett) are the film’s more reasonable shots at Oscar contention. Bridges has even been catapulted to most prognosticator’s winner predictions.
Adapted from a book written by Thomas Cobb, the film is both written and directed by actor/filmmaker Scott Cooper and is making »

I said it yesterday when the poster premiered and I'll say it again: Fox Searchlight is throwing every ounce of their weight behind Crazy Heart as their big deal Oscar contender of the season, even if it will only result in a Best Actor nod for Jeff Bridges. The shock-and-awe campaign continues apiece today with the trailer's debut at Apple.com-- you can watch it in high-res there or embedded in our player below. It plays out exactly how you'd expect-- washed-up singer Bridges finds a new lease on life thanks to a relationship with a much younger journalist, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The western settings and Bridges' performance seem perfectly on-key, but in this brief glimpse, it's very, very hard to buy a relationship between Gyllenhaal and Bridges-- I don't care if he is The Dude. I'll be interested to see if they can pull it off over the »

Is Crazy Heart going to be this year's The Wrestler? Fox Searchlight is certainly hoping so... they've even inserted the phrase "broken-down" into the movie's synopsis. The film stars Jeff Bridges as an alcoholic country singer named Bad Blake, who takes one last shot at redemption after meeting a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who is trying to get to the real story about his life. Okay, so maybe there's a little bit of Anvil in there too? The movie is the directorial debut of Scott Cooper, who up until now was best known as an actor (his previous credits include AMC's western mini-series Broken Trail). Fox Searchlight was originally going to release Crazy Heart in the spring but decided to move up the release date in order to make a push for the Oscars. I'm sure we'd all love to see Jeff Bridges win one at this point in his career, »

Yesterday we saw the first poster and images from Crazy Heart, Fox Searchlight's film which stars Jeff Bridges as "a washed-up, alcoholic country singer who gets his life back on track thanks to a reporter-type (Maggie Gyllenhaal)." I've heard from a couple of people in the know that Bridges will be a contender for Best Actor with his performance. And lets not forget that Robert Duval and Colin Farrell round out the cast. Searchlight has now released the first trailer for the film, which you can watch embedded after the jump. The story is drawing strong comparisons to Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, and after watching the trailer, you will definitely see why. As always, I'd love to hear what you think -- leave your thoughts in the comments below!
