Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: December 6, 2009

13 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It’s Sunday and that means that it’s Wrap Up time.

This week:

The box office is Blind Sided; if you go down to the woods today you might see Tom Cavanagh in Yogi Bear; Leonardo DiCaprio knows Jack Frost in The Guardians; Have you ever heard Gun, With Occasional Music? Beautiful Creatures say P.S I Love You; John Madden will Dolittle directing with My Fair Lady and it’s all in the double barrel name as Paul Thomas Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman find religion.

Box Office

Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side just keeps doing better and better. The uplifting sports drama has took the top spot with an impressive $20 million after three weeks on the charts. 2009 has been a great year for Bullock and if Warner Bros. gives the actress the expected Oscar push then 2010 shouldn’t be too bad either.

Michelle Williams to Play Marilyn Monroe?

4 December 2009 12:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you had to pick a young actress to play Marilyn Monroe, who would you choose? Can you even think of someone who'd truly fit the role? Personally, I can't, but I do know one thing: Michelle Williams -- God, I love her -- wouldn't even make my top 50. So, seeing the Tweet from Production Weekly claiming the Oscar-nominated actress is in talks to play the titular icon in a movie called My Week with Marilyn made me nearly fall out of my chair.

I'm not sure if my reaction is more unfair to Williams or Monroe, but I guess I imagine someone less talented and less wholesome-looking. Someone like Scarlett Johansson, who was previously rumored to be in line for the film. Or Megan Fox, Malin Ackerman, Anna Faris or any other pin-up type currently included in Maxim's Hot 100.

Monthly Movie Preview – December 2009

3 December 2009 1:53 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.

First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.

Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

Yogi Bear Recruits Tom Cavanagh

1 December 2009 12:44 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The big-screen outing for Yogi Bear, due late next year, has found a Ranger Smith / male lead, and that actor is Tom Cavanagh! Ok, he's not quite a household name yet, but he played Jd's brother in Scrubs so he gets a pass from us.Cavanagh's Ranger becomes the love interest for Anna Faris' documentary filmmaker as she visits Jellystone Park to shoot a film. We're guessing the two get thrown together thanks, at least partly, to the exploits of eccentric bear Yogi (voiced by Dan Aykroyd) and his counterpart BooBoo (voiced by Justin Timberlake). It's all being directed by Eric Brevig, who brought us the rather charming Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and written by Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia. Let's hope it all turns out smarter than the average live action / CG-animated mix, eh? »

Yogi Bear Gets A Ranger Smith

30 November 2009 10:59 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

A few weeks ago when it was announced here that Anna Faris had been cast as the non-animated lead in the new live-actionish movie version of Yogi Bear, I wondered what the hell happened to Ranger Smith. Well here he is! He.s being played by Tom Cavanagh, a guy who.s never been in anything that wasn.t utterly forgettable. If you know him at all, maybe it.s as the lead in the wholly awful Heather Graham movie Gray Matters in which she victimizes her brother by lezzing out with his wife behind his back. Some Tom Cavanagh.s playing Ranger Smith and he has no particular qualifications other than that he does, rather strangely, actually sort of look like him (I think it.s the ears). Well this is the Yogi Bear movie, what the hell did you expect? Robert De Niro already did Rocky & Bullwinkle, he »

Yogi Bear Finds His Ranger Smith: Tom Carvanagh

30 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Last month when I posted the last casting update for the hybrid live-action/computer animated feature based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Yogi Bear, I wondered if Park Ranger Smith would be included in the film, as he had yet to be mentioned. Variety now has word that Tom Carvanagh (Ed) has joined the cast, and will be playing Ranger Smith. Carvanagh will play the live-action lead, and romantic interest of another live-action character named Rachel (Anna Faris), a nature documentary filmmaker who is trying to film Yogi and Boo-Boo for her next project. Dan Aykroydwill voice the computer animated Yogi, the lovable Jellystone Park bear who is notorious for his attempts at stealing picnic baskets from campers, much to the displeasure of Park Ranger Smith. And Justin Timberlake will voice the computer animated Boo-Boo, a bow-tied bear cub who acts as Yogi's constant companion and conscience. The film also features »

Cavanagh, Miller Join ‘Yogi Bear’

30 November 2009 5:59 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Tom Cavanagh and T.J. Miller have joined the cast of Warner Bros’ live-action/CGI hybrid Yogi Bear.  The two will be playing park rangers at Jellystone Park with Cavanagh filling the role of Ranger Smith, the male lead and love interest of Anna Faris’ character.

Faris, Cavanagh, and Miller will fill the live-action portion of the Eric Brevig movie, according to Variety, and the bears (Yogi and Boo-Boo) are being created using computer animation to be voiced by Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake.  I wish I was kidding, but I couldn’t make this stuff up.  I’m just not clever enough to come up with a Ghostbuster and former boy band member as the voices of two cartoon, picnic basket-stealing bears.

As for the new cast choices, Cavanagh has been acting for almost 20 years and the best thing he’s done is a recurring supporting role on “Scrubs.”  Then there’s Miller, »

Birthday Suits: The Blonde and the Bookish

29 November 2009 4:24 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Celebrating cinematic birthdays for 11/29. Which celebrity would you most like to spank today?

Blond³: Diane, Anna and Cathy

1832 Louisa May Alcott wrote the oft-adapted Little Women

1895 Busby Berkeley, legendary choreographer/director. What would the early musicals have been without him?

1898 C.S. Lewis wrote the Chronicles of Narnia which were made into unfortunately generic movies. He also wrote The Screwtape Letters which I personally pray will never see the silver screen despite Hollywood's efforts. Some books just deserve the undiluted perfection of their original form. Sir Anthony Hopkins played him in the weepy bio Shadowlands (1993)

1901 Mildred Harris, silent film actress and Mrs Charlie Chaplin (for a few years)

1918 Madeleine L'Engle prolific author, most famous for Wrinkle in Time

1931 Shintarô Katsu the original blind swordsman Zatoichi

1932 Diane Ladd, if you don't love her Oscar nom'ed performances in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Rambling Rose and Wild at Heart, well... what's wrong with you? »

T.J. Miller Creates Yogi Bear Audition Tape with Actual Bear; Gets Cast in Movie

22 November 2009 1:59 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Most of you probably know T.J. Miller as Hud, the frazzled cameraman/comic relief in Matt Reeves' Cloverfield. Turns out that since that performance, Miller has been angling for a role in the forthcoming adaptation of Yogi Bear. While cartoon-to-screen adaptations have typically ended up being abominations, this one at least looks like it has a pretty good cast going for it, with Anna Faris, Justin Timberlake, and Dan Aykroyd signing on a few weeks ago. According to The Apiary, Miller had already been called in to audition twice for the role. Afterwards, as a joke, Miller worked with filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts to create the below audition tape, in which Miller interacts with a real-life bear. The video somehow made its way to Barry Meyer, the chairman of Warner Brothers, resulting in an offer for the part of Ranger Jones. Presumably, Ranger Jones will be a live-action role, while »
