My So-Called Life lands on Hulu

12 August 2009 4:30 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Today I don't feel like Brian Krakow standing sad and alone in the street holding my bike. Nope, today it feels like the Internet is giving me a big warm hug thanks to the debut of My So-Called Life on Hulu. The site is now streaming every episode of ABC's pioneering but short-lived series about a teenage girl growing up in the '90s.

For the uninitiated, My So-Called Life stars Claire Danes as Angela Chase, a teen desperately searching for meaning in her life and balancing new friends, the wild Rayanne Graff (A.J. Langer) and gay 15-year-old Rickie Vasquez (Wilson Cruz), with old ones, nerdy Brian (Devon Gummersall) and cheerleader Sharon Cherski (Devon Odessa). The show also chronicles Angela's parents' (Bess Armstrong and Tom Irwin) rocky relationship and her obsession with the broody Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto).Continue reading My So-Called Life lands on Hulu

Why Can’t You Just Butch Up? Gay Men, Effeminacy, and Our War with Ourselves

10 June 2009 8:33 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

In February, Skate Canada, the governing board of Canadian figure skating, announced that it was embarking on a campaign to change the image of men’s skating – from sometimes frilly and flamboyant to more of an emphasis on power, speed, and endurance.

The announcement was greeted negatively by some Glbt groups who saw the move as little more than thinly veiled homophobia and a slap in the face of the sport’s existing fans.

Two-time Olympic silver medalist Elvis Stojko seemed aware of the controversy when he told the Toronto Sun, "It has nothing to do with your sexual preference. It's all about what men's skating is – power and strength. Whether he's gay or straight, it doesn't matter. It's what you're showcasing on the ice. If you're very lyrical and you're really feminine and soft, well, that's not men's skating. That is not men’s skating, okay?” [Note: The emphasis was Stojko's.]

Ask AfterEllen.com (June 2, 2009)

1 June 2009 6:13 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Want to know the status of a particular movie, TV show, or band? Wondering what a certain actress is up to these days? Send your entertainment-related questions to askafterellen@gmail.com — with your first name, city and country — and we'll try to answer as many as we can.

Question: I loved But I'm a Cheerleader, and I have watched Itty Bitty Titty Committee ten times now. Enough already! When is Jamie Babbit's next movie coming out?

― Tina, Columbia, MD

Jamie Babbit

Answer: Did you check out Babbit's 2005 feature, The Quiet, starring Elisha Cuthbert, Camilla Belle and Edie Falco? If not, the cast alone should be enough to send you to the video store.

I passed your question along to Babbitt, who told me:

I'm currently casting for my new film called Breaking The Girl. It's tonally in the vein of Body Heat, with lots of bi beauties and femme fatales. »

The Ladies' Choice Hot 50 Results

21 May 2009 10:40 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

We may be a predominantly gay male entertainment site, but we always try to look out for the ladies here at AfterElton.com. We felt bad that we had to ask our female readers to sit out the Hot 100 voting last month (for that list we wanted a fair representation of whom gay men find attractive), so to make up for it we ran a special poll just for the ladies in last week's Best.Gay.Week.Ever!  We wanted to hear from our female readers about which gay men they find hot.

Call it The Ladies' Choice Hot 50. You'll find the results after the break!

If there's one thing women and gay men can agree on it seems to be Neil Patrick Harris, who headlines both the regular Hot 100 and this list. After some further Hot 100 similarities near the top (John Barrowman, Luke MacFarlane, etc.) things start to diverge considerably. »

Hope, Pride and Courage at GLAAD Awards

20 May 2009 1:42 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Hope, pride and courage were the dominant themes at the 20th Annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamatio (GLAAD) Media Awards, which unraveled with a burst of energy in San Francisco this month. Chatfest darling Chelsea Handler played hostess at the well-attended ceremony, which honored the best in television and journalism. But others turned heads as well. Everybody from the city's mayor, Gavin Newsom, to attendees like finance queen Suze Orman, actors Jason Lewis, Robert Gant, Wilson Cruz and others, delivered spirited commentaries on the advances of Lgbt civil rights over the past year. Meanwhile, actor Chad Allen and Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black nabbed significant honors for their work. It was the third and final GLAAD Awards event this season -- previous awards were handed out in New York and Los Angeles last month -- and it was met... »

L.A. Scene May '09: The GLAAD Awards, an Evening with Women, and The Abbey

13 May 2009 5:56 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

L.A. Scene is a monthly column that chronicles lesbian nightlife and events of interest in Los Angeles. Sarah Witness, an East Coast transplant and obvious femme, has been navigating the snark infested waters of Hollywood since 2001. Although she's an Nyu trained actress, she prefers sipping vodka and making idle chit-chat at really gay nightclubs.

GLAAD Media Awards

I attended the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles on on April 18. When I told a number of lesbian friends that I would be going to this, rather than lurking typically around West Hollywood on a Saturday night, they told me this was pointless because GLAAD is mostly for guys. Some of my best friends know guys, so I decided to give it a whirl.

And guess what? It was a giant sea of gay. Shocking. Actually, I have never seen so many gay people in one room. »

AfterElton Fantasy Casting: Who should steal Bradley Cooper's heart in "Valentine's Day"?

12 May 2009 1:52 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Alias star Bradley Cooper, who's made memorable appearances in Nip/Tuck and starred in the short-lived Kitchen Confidential (and also is rumored to be the favorite for the title role in the big-screen Green Lantern) will co-star in the Garry Marshall-directed ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day:

Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine, Bradley Cooper and Ashton Kutcher are in final negotiations to star in the movie, which has five slightly interconnecting stories playing out during a Valentine's Day in Los Angeles.

Roberts is an army officer on leave from Iraq on a flight to L.A. Cooper, on the same flight, is a gay man whose lover is a closeted football player.

Okay, while we all try to wipe the incomprehensible sentence "Roberts is an army officer on leave from Iraq" from our minds, let's ponder who should play the as-yet-uncast role of Bradley's closeted football player lover. »

The 2009 AfterElton Hot 100

10 May 2009 9:48 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

After triumphing for two years in a row, Jake Gyllenhaal is not the winner of our third annual AfterElton.com Hot 100 poll (see the results for 2007 here and 2008 here). So which out man did take the top spot? If you’re the kind of person who always burns their mouth biting into that piping hot chocolate chip cookie, you can just cheat and go here to learn who came in first place.

Here at AfterElton.com, we’re thrilled to announce an out gay man topped this year’s list – especially this particular man as most of us voted for him as well. In fact, out gay men snagged nearly 20% of the spots, including the top three. To be sure, we’ve nothing against our straight male crushes, but it says something great about 2009 that there are so many out men to choose from.

The 2009 AfterElton Hot 100: Men of Color

10 May 2009 9:47 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

While African-American men only nabbed 4% of the slots on the Hot 100 list, they pretty much ruled the roost when it came to this category. Indeed, it was nearly a Top 10 sweep with only Wilson Cruz and Mario López sneaking in at the end. As for Asians, B.D. Wong landed at #14 and Daniel Dae Kim came in at #18 while Sendhil Ramamurthy pretty much carried the torch for Indian representation by placing #12. The next highest-ranking man of Indian descent was British native Dev Patel, who made quite an impact in Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Alas, the success of that movie only propelled Dev to #28.

After Cruz and López, the next highest ranking men of Hispanic descent were Gael García Bernal and Guillermo Díaz at #s 20 and 21, respectively. Pop singer Ricky Martin clocked in at #26 followed by soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo at #40.

With any luck, the election of Barack Obama will remind all of us »

Beyond the Gay Role

4 March 2009 6:18 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Given the fact that Sean Penn just nabbed an Oscar for playing gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk, surely there is still no stigma attached to playing gay, right?

That’s an easy assumption for many viewers – gay and straight – to make, but what do the men who play these roles believe?

AfterElton.com talked with a number of actors who have played gay roles past and present for their thoughts. Do they think playing a gay role can help, hurt or have no real effect on their careers? How has that changed over the years? What do their peers think? And have we finally moved beyond the stigma a gay role once carried?

Their answers might surprise you.

Surprising reaction to gay role on “Raising The Bar.”

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: Have you been watching The Soup? Besides the always-adorable Joel McHale, there is a really hot guy that shows up every once and a while, mostly to either get shot by Joel or shoot himself. All I know is that he has a great body and needs to take his shirt off more. Who is he? And no, I'm not talking about the guy in the man-kini. -- Daniel, Vacaville, California

Production assistant Matt Carney greases up on The Soup

A: His name is Matt Carney and he really is a production assistant on the show, just like they say. “I started as an intern in ’07,” he tells the Monkey, “and eventually collected enough dirt on enough people that they had no choice but to hire me as a Production Assistant. »

Thandie Newton

Answer: Since it's really up to the individual in question to officially label their sexual orientation, I think it's safer to say that she's "potentially" bisexual.

Actress Thandie Newton (W., Crash) is married to director Ol Parker, who made many new lesbian friends when he wrote and directed the romantic comedy Imagine Me & You (2005), starring Piper Perabo and Lena Headey. »
