Winfrey Will Support Obama At Democratic Crowning

15 August 2008 5:04 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

U.S. chatshow queen Oprah Winfrey has confirmed she will support U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama on the night he is crowned America's Democratic party leader.

The TV icon has championed the Illinois senator throughout his campaign, speaking out on her daily chatshow to urge people to vote for the politician.

Winfrey came under fire from female fans after she refused to back Hillary Clinton - the first woman to run for U.S. presidency - before the politician lost the race to become the Democrat presidential candidate to her rival Obama earlier this year.

And the TV mogul is taking her support a step further, by announcing she will attend Barack's official crowning at the end of the party's four-day convention in Denver, Colorado later this month.

A representative for Winfrey says, "She will be there."

Earlier this month, U.S. economists mathematically calculated the number of votes Winfrey had won for Obama - claiming she had won the senator and estimated 1,015,519 voters so far.

Winfrey School Trial Postponed

4 August 2008 9:12 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Latest: The trial of a former employee accused of abusing children at Oprah Winfrey's all-girl academy in South Africa has been postponed until October.

Former dorm matron Tiny Virginia Makopo was arrested in October on 14 charges including assault, indecent assault and soliciting underage girls to perform indecent acts.

She is accused of committing the crimes at Winfrey's Henley-on-Klip Leadership Academy over a period of four months in 2007.

The trial opened in Johannesburg last Tuesday with Makopo entering a not guilty plea to all charges against her.

However, on Friday, the judge at Sebokeng Magistrate Court ruled the trial will resume on 22 October - when testimony from the remaining victims will be heard.

The delay has come as a blow to the prosecution - who had hoped the trial would be over this summer.

State prosecutor Etienne Venter says, "I'm a bit sad. We were hoping to finish all six victims by now... We're going to try and see if we can finish all six of them in those three days."

If found guilty on all 14 charges, Makopo faces a minimum of 10 years in prison. She is currently free on bail.

Winfrey co-founded the academy in 2006, and in late 2007 issued a heartfelt apology to the students who allegedly suffered at the hands of school officials.
