The Mighty Thor may finally have found his father, with the news that Anthony Hopkins is in talks to play the one-eyed Norse Allfather Odin (aka Woden, Wotan, or if you're a Neil Gaiman fan, Mr Wednesday) in Kenneth Branagh's mythic Marvel epic.Maybe he's had his enthusiasm for big-budget Hollywood reignited with The Wolfman, or maybe it was Branagh's involvement that persuaded him, but either way, it'll be great to see Hopkins back in a blockbuster, and he joins a stonking cast which, you'll know by now, also includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki (Odin's other, adopted son), Natalie Portman as nurse Jane Foster, and Jamie Alexander as the Lady Sif (plus Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury and Stellan Skarsgard in a still unspecified role). As portrayed in the comics, Odin ought to be considerally more dressed and less drunk than Hopkins' turn as King Hrothgar in Beowulf. »

Anthony Hopkins has taken a leap from being a cannibalistic serial killer to be a Marvel Universe god. According to Variety, the actor who received an Academy Award for his Dr. Hannibal Lecter portrayal in 1991's "The Silence of the Lambs" has come on board the forthcoming Marvel's adaptation, "Thor".
The publication claimed that the 71-year-old has signed on to star as Odin, the father of the titular character as well as of Thor's half-brother and nemesis, Loki. The co-star of Benicio del Toro in "The Wolfman", thus, is expected to share screen with Chris Hemsworth, who will play Thor, and Tom Hiddleston, who is set to take on Loki.

Sir Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to play Odin, the Norse god and ruler of Asgard in Marvel’s upcoming comic book movie Thor. Kenneth Branagh is directing the production that starts in January and is scheduled for theaters on May 20, 2011.
Odin is the biological father of the Thunder God, Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth), and the adopted dad of the God of Evil, Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Talk about bragging rights around the office. “Oh, your son made the baseball team? Yeah, well, mine’s the god of thunder, so…”
In the film, Thor’s arrogance and recklessness re-ignite an ancient war, so he’s cast out of Asgard and down to Earth. There, as his human form Donald Blake, he meets a nurse named Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). When Loki comes to Earth Thor is forced to take up the hammer and fight him.

There's big news from Asgard tonight! According to The Hollywood Reporter, the legendary Sir Anthony Hopkins has joined the cast of Thor. This isn't one of these tightly kept casting announcements either, as THR reports that he and no one else is playing Odin. (Incidentally, there's no mention of Robert DeNiro and Jude Law among the confirmed cast members, so I'm guessing that was just a fever dream of a rumor.)
If you're not up on your Thor or Nordic mythology, Odin is the father of Thor and the ruler of Asgard. He's your typical white-bearded god sort, fond of wine, women, and wisdom. He's not immortal (none of the gods of Asgard are), but ages slowly, and possesses amazing powers of strength and wisdom. He famously sacrifices his eye for the foresight to prevent Ragnarok, a sadly futile act, but you can't blame a god for trying.

As far as we can tell, the rumors about Jude Law and Robert De Niro joining Kenneth Branagh's Thor were just that. While I wouldn't be surprised to see Jude Law attached, the De Niro thing never made a lot of sense organically. But apparently there was nothing to it, leaving holes still to be filled in the cast for the upcoming Marvel movie.
Enter Sir Anthony Hopkins. He'll be Odin, the great Norse god and father of Thor (Chris Hemsworth, Kirk's father in Star Trek). In addition to Hemsworth and Hannibal Lecter, Thor features Natalie Portman, Brian Blessed, Colm Feore, Stellan Skarsgard, and Tom Hiddleston. That's actually a really good cast backing up Hemsworth and Hiddleston, who were the first two names added to the ensemble.
From the standpoint of creating effective drama, Branagh's a good director for the job. The effects are bound to give any director trouble. »

There were plenty of rumors and conversation regarding the casting of Mad Max 4, which is now confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter to be titled Fury Road, and they have all proven true as the trade announces Bronson star Tom Hardy will step into the role of Max Rockatansky, a hardened ex-cop in a future beset by gas shortages and marauding gangs.. The role made iconic by Mel Gibson in the 1979 original, followed by The Road Warrior in 1981 and 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
This new film is said to the take place a short while after the story detailed in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in which Max becomes a pawn in a decadent oasis of technological society, and when exiled, becomes the deliverer of a colony of children. Charlize Theron has signed on to play the female lead.
A shoot next summer in Australia is being eyed. The movie »

Not too long ago -- about five months to be more exact -- actor Brian Blessed was reportedly in very serious talks to step into Marvel's next epic comic adaptation, Kenneth Branagh's Thor, as the title characters godly father, Odin. Since then, we've also heard that the role of Odin could be going the way of Stellan Skarsgard, as I surmised in my recent Thor casting breakdown. Well, throw all of that out the window this evening, as we've now got something new. According to THR's Heat Vision, Anthony Hopkins is "in negotiations" to play the Norse god Odin, and will play father to Chris Hemsworth's Thor. The movie’s story will see Thor, the god of thunder, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true »

Casting rumors regarding "Thor" have included some of Hollywood's best and brightest lately, and now it looks like we could have some official word soon on one of the principal characters in the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to play Odin, the father of Thor, who rules the Norse gods in Asgard. The casting, though not entirely official yet, debunks previous rumors that tagged Shakespearean actor Brian Blessed for the role.
Hopkins, a multiple Oscar nominee who won the award in 1992 for his role as the fiendish cannibal Hannibal Lecter, will join previously announced "Thor" cast members Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster, Thor's love interest) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki, Thor's half-brother and nemesis).
Jaimie Alexander and Colm Feore were recently reported to have roles in the film, though there's been no official confirmation, while other actors rumored for roles include Robert DeNiro, »

I guess those rumors of Brian Blessed playing Odin in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Thor movie aren’t coming to fruition. Who needs him when you have a knighted Oscar winner in Sir Anthony Hopkins!
That’s right folks, director Kenneth Branagh as added another huge name and talented actor to his cast of awesomeness. I am pumped.
This movie was already my most anticipated of Marvel’s upcoming slate of solo films leading up to The Avengers, here’s just on more big reason to be excited.
Unlike the rumors of big names like Robert De Niro and Jude Law joining the cast of Thor, this star is confirmed to be in negotiations for the role. Also joining the cast earlier this month is the talented Stellan Skarsgård in addition to the report of Dominic Cooper possibly playing Fandral. If you’re a fan of the Thor comics, Fandral the »

Kyle Buchanan at Movieline interviewed actor Dominic Cooper (The Duchess, Mamma Mia!) not long ago and managed to scoop some interesting information from him about Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming Marvel Studios film based on Marvel’s God of Thunder.
Towards the end of the interview, while talking about the possibility of Mamma Mia! 2, Buchanan noticed Thor script sides beside him and directly asked him if he had auditioned for a role in the Thor movie. After a pause, Cooper revealed that he “kind of” did and questioned back if the interviewer knew of any good Thor roles for him.
Having read what was on the top page (upside down), Buchanan wittingly replied “Fandral, maybe?”
This generated a bit of humor as Cooper looked down at the script sides and said, “You know! You’re looking at these very confidential pages!”
Buchanan then said “I can read upside down, Dominic” to »

Casting is in full-force this month for Marvel's next big comic adaptation, the Kenneth Branagh directed Thor, which means that you will undoubtedly be bombarded with more than a few "this person is auditioning" stories. And until official word is heard from inside the halls of Marvel, it is all nothing more than hearsay. However, it is fun and I would like to indulge you by breaking down some of the names who've been named in the past few days. Dominic Cooper The most solid of these rumors is Mamma Mia! star Dominic Cooper, who is doing press for his role in Lone Scherfig's An Education. He talked to Movieline this week, and it was revealed that he's been studying for an audition for the film. When probed as to what part he might play, Cooper and interviewer Kyle Buchanon settled on the part of Fandral the Dashing, one of the Warriors Three. All »

I know it seems the past two days I have been debunking superhero rumors from Ain’t It Cool News, but that’s just how this business goes. It’s nothing personal. Sometimes an insider feeds you a scoop and other times it’s incomplete information. Unfortunately for my Austin colleagues, this is another one that turned up false:
AICN heard through a game of Internet telephone and actor Matthias Schweighöfer that he was in the running for a role in Thor. On top of that he would be joining Robert De Niro and Jude Law, who supposedly occupied unknown roles. This was all translated second hand from the German version of GQ.
Both Law and De Niro have worked with Thor’s director, Kenneth Branagh, in previous projects and their addition would give a bit more star power to an otherwise weaker cast of unknowns (aside from Natalie Portman »

The casting twists and turns of the Marvel Universe are nearly as interesting as the movies themselves -- ok, not quite, but you have to let me run with a little hyperbole. The casting for Kenneth Branagh's Thor has been top notch so far, but the latest casting rumors might just take the film into the realm of unbelievable. According to Ain't It Cool News, German actor Matthias Schweighöfer revealed in German GQ that not only was he up for a role in Thor, but that Jude Law and Robert DeNiro were part of the cast.
Obviously, this is coming from a magazine and through a bit of translation, so we'll have to see if its officially confirmed. But running on the big assumption that this is a done deal, Thor has managed to land the biggest and most illustrious cast of Marvel yet -- and after Iron Man 1 and 2, that's saying a lot. »

In last two weeks there have been a few additional announcements made for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Thor film. We learned that Stellan Skarsgård, father of Thor candidate Alexander Skarsgård, was cast into the movie but he had to remain tight-lipped about who he was playing. Following that, a pair of open casting calls surfaced that asked for a college student and a bunch of large “fearless” warriors.
So, if you weren’t excited about the cast so far which also includes Chris Hemsworth as the title character, Tom Hiddleston as his nemesis, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and possibly Brian Blessed as Odin, you might be more excited now with the following two names possibly added to the cast.
According to actor Matthias Schweighöfer (Valkyrie) in an interview for the German edition of GQ, he reveals that he’s in the running for a role in Thor but that »

Stop The Presses!
Here’s an interesting little bit of casting news that at this moment I’m going to take with a pinch of salt.
During an interview with German actor Matthias Schweighöfer who was most recently seen in Valkyrie and The Red Baron stated that not only was he up for a part in Kenneth Branagh’s comic book adaptation Thor, but that a certain Robert DeNiro and Jude Law have already been cast.
This naturally has sent the fanboys into overdrive. Is it true? Who could they possibly be playing? In fact whom could Schweighöfer himself be playing if he gets the part? Thor is already blessed with a huge cast including Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Colm Feore, Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth.
The script for Thor seems to be closely guarded as very few details have emerged on how the film will play out exactly.

The Kenneth Branagh-led live-action adaptation of the classic Marvel Comics character Thor may have just gotten another injection of star power. After little-known actor Chris Hemsworth was cast in the title role, fans were wondering whether Captain Kirk's dad would be enough of a draw to get non-comic book fans to see the movie.
Subsequent Thor casting has proven that Branagh is looking to fill his movie with the very best that Hollywood has to offer. If the additions of Academy Award-nominated actress Natalie Portman and multiple award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård isn't enough, the latest rumor has two-time Oscar-nominated actor Jude Law and two-time Oscar-winning actor Robert DeNiro joining the cast.
According to AICN, German-born Valkyrie actor Matthias Schweighöfer told German GQ that he is up for a role in Thor and that DeNiro and Law are already on board. There is no mention of who or what characters »

During a panel at last weekend’s Baltimore Comic-Con, "New Avengers" writer Brian Michael Bendis fielded some questions about the upcoming slate of Marvel movies and offered a ringing endorsement of the script for Kenneth Branagh's upcoming "Thor" movie
"I was reading the new script just last night," Bendis told fans, according to a ComicBookResources report on the event. "[It was] very, very good."
Bendis’ comments came shortly after a G4 interview in which he stated that the "Thor" movie would be the surprise hit out of all of the upcoming Marvel movies. Bendis reiterated his description of Branagh’s vision for “Thor” as “Shakespearean.”
The “Thor” movie has dominated the film news cycle in recent months as Chris Hemsworth stepped into the role almost immediately after his memorable turn in “Star Trek," followed by Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and more recently Stellan Skarsgård.

One of the silliest pleasures of revisiting older films is seeing actors in small roles, back before you had any idea who they were. Sometimes it's the only reason to watch something over again -- after all, why else would you rent 1990's Tales From the Darkside: The Movie if not to giggle at Julianne Moore being terrorized by a mummy controlled by Steve Buscemi, or pick up Leprechaun other than to mock the performance of the young Jennifer Aniston?
Sometimes the now-familiar faces pop up in stuff that's still worth watching, as with Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis on TV's Pee-Wee's Playhouse, or Johnny Depp in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street. That's a bonanza. And when the earlier role is vastly different from the sort of thing they've settled in to playing now, it's all the more delightful.
Take, for example, Alexander Skarsgard, who sets hearts a-flutter »
