The Blu-Ray Review: The Hannibal Lecter Collection - Manhunter (1986)

30 September 2009 10:16 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin J reviews the very first Lecter movie on Blu-Ray.

Though it didn't perform particularly well in 1986, Manhunter earned greater prominence after the success of 1991's Silence of the Lambs. The two projects share the same writer - Thomas Harris - and a few characters. Most prominent among these is the infamous Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter, the role made immensely famous by Anthony Hopkins in Lambs. On the original DVD case of Manhunter, we were repeatedly reminded that the 1986 film showed Lecter first, and allegedly did him better. According to the package, Entertainment Weekly declared Manhunter to be "superior to Lambs". The case also "warns" us that "fans and critics alike consider Manhunter to be far superior to Lambs... as well as one of the most unnerving serial killer movies ever made."

What a crock! As a critic and a fan, I take serious exception to the awfully broad brush with which these folks painted. »

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. 3 Actors Jump Onto ‘Secretariat’

25 September 2009 4:27 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Seabiscuit just got some steeper competition. ‘Secretariat,’ currently in pre-production for a 2010 release from Walt Disney Pictures, has added three more actors to a cast that already boasts Diane Lane (Nights In Rodanthe). The Hollywood Reporter states that Dylan Walsh (Nip/Tuck), John Malkovich (Burn After Reading) and Scott Glenn (W.) have signed on to the film centering on the owner of the famous thoroughbred racehorse that captured the United States Triple Crown in 1973.

Malkovich will play the horse’s trainer Lucien Laurin. Glenn plays Ogden Phipps, the thoroughbred owner/breeder who famously lost the hall of fame racehorse in a coin toss while Walsh plays husband to Lane’s Penny Tweedy – also known as “the first lady of racing” – Secretariat’s owner.

While selling a film about horse racing might seem like a stretch, the aforementioned Seabiscuit managed to earn $120 million plus at the box office. By throwing in »

A 'Highlander' Remake For The 'Fast & Furious' Director And 'The Wrestler' Director Finds His Next Project In Today's Dailies

-- Darren Aronofsky may be busy with "Black Swan" -- which sounds a lot like "Fight Club" with ballerinas to me -- but he's going to need something more grounded as a follow-up to 2008's Oscar-nominated "The Wrestler." And here it is. The filmmaker has partnered with Time Inc. Studios and Xyz Films to direct/produce an "indie heist thriller" based on the 2006 robbery of the Securitas Depot in Tonbridge, England, in which thieves made off with roughly $85 million. (Variety)

-- Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to Lucy Prebble's stage play "Enron," which chronicles the high-profile fall of the Texas energy concern. Prebble will adapt her script for film and Laura Ziskin will produce, though no additional cast or crew players have yet been revealed. (Variety)

'Secretariat' Gets More Solid Cast Members

22 September 2009 2:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Get ready for the sports waterworks, folks. Back in June, Jenni Miller wrote about the latest horse racing drama to cook up -- Secretariat, with Diane Lane attached to play the thoroughbred's owner, Penny Chenery. Now the major players are in place, and there's no doubt that Disney is prepping this is a big sports drama. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Dylan Walsh, John Malkovich, and Scott Glenn have joined the production, which began shooting this week.

Secretariat was the horse that broke a 25-year Triple Crown dry spell, setting world records and winning the final Belmont Stakes with an eye-goggling 31-length win (in other words, so far ahead that the horses behind look teeny). He's pretty much the horse amongst race fans, and is known for having the biggest recorded heart (22 lbs). But it all started with a coin toss.

THR says Glenn will play "a southern-bred aristocrat who »

[DVD Review] Camille

22 September 2009 10:46 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

In love, there are always new stories to be told. But is this the same when it comes to movies? Or for that matter, movies about love? We’ve seen so many romantic comedies roll from opening credits (Diane Keaton, Cary Grant, Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, etc), through the first kiss and the last one. When the final credits drop into the screen, some cry, some laugh, but most feel a strong feeling of satisfaction.

You see, love is constantly changing and movies just try to keep up and use the old stories to create new ones. In an attempt to create a new story about a timeless topic, Camille changes all the rules. Our main character, Camille (Sienna Miller), is a blonde beauty who always gets what she wants. That sounds vain, but it isn’t. She is the opposite of vain. In fact she is aloof and charming, »

John Malkovich Jumps Onto Secreteriat

22 September 2009 8:29 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Sadly, this isn't about a sequel to the 2002 film Secretary. John Malkovich is joining Secretariat, the film directed by Braveheart writer Randall Wallace, about three people whose lives intersected, thanks to the champion horse Secretariat. (One of a few horses to win the Triple Crown of the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Preakness Stakes.) If Seabiscuit didn't have the horseracing moxie you wanted, check out more details on this champ, after the break. Variety reports that Malkovich will play Lucien Laurin, the former horse jockey who became Secretariat's trainer. (Isn't he a little tall for an ex-horse jockey?)  Diane Lane has already been announced as Penny Tweedy, owner of Meadow Farm, a horse breeding business in Virginia that was founded by her father Christopher. THR reports that Dylan Walsh has also come aboard as Tweedy's husband, an attorney who wants his wife waiting for him at home. Finally, Scott Glenn »

Secretariat signs triple crown of Dylan Walsh, John Malkovich and Scott Glenn

22 September 2009 8:08 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Filming begins this week in Louisiana and Kentucky on Secretariat, the story of the 1973 Triple-Crown-winning horse. Producers have rounded out the cast not a moment too soon by recently signing Dylan Walsh(”Nip/Tuck”), John Malkovich and Scott Glenn according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Also in the film is Diane Lane, who plays Secretariat’s unlikely owner Penny Tweedy. Walsh steps in as Lane’s successful attorney husband; Glenn plays a southern aristocrat who loses the horse in a coin flip; Malkovich is the trainer who underestimates the the horse’s abilities.

At the helm is Randall Wallace working from a script written by Mike Rich.

All I know about the story of Secretariat comes from Espn so this film could give some insight into the life of the famous equine and those who helped him along the way. I don’t expect this film to be a 31-length winner, »

John Malkovich Helping Diane Lane Run The Triple Crown

Secretariat seems like it's going to be Diane Lane's show, with the actress playing the owner of the famous horse, who broke horse racing's gender barrier and led Secretariat to win the 1973 Triple Crown. But no great actress can be great all on her own (or just with a horse), so a trio of menfolk have signed on to join her in the film. According to THR, John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh, and Scott Glenn have all joined the cast. Walsh will play Lane's husband who isn't necessarily happy about his wife's new career, with Malkovich as the horse's trainer and Glenn as Secretariat's former owner. »

Blu-Ray Round Up: MGM Releases Wave of Modern Horror Classics

22 September 2009 6:16 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Start planning your Halloween marathon now. Last week, we highlighted the Universal wave of titles that included greats like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Army of Darkness” and we’re back with another wave of modern horror classics, including Oscar winners “Silence of the Lambs” and “Misery”.

The Blu-Ray Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s regular column that highlights synopsis, tech details, and special features for titles that might otherwise fall through your Blu-Ray buying cracks, doesn’t usually play favorites, but every good horror fan should have “Manhunter,” “Silence,” “Child’s Play,” and “Misery” in their collection. Whether or not you need to own the “Wrong Turn” films is something only you can decide.

All five titles were released last week, September 15th, 2009. Both “Child’s Play” and “Misery” are presented in a Bd/DVD combo pack with both HD and standard versions of the film.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Robert Rodriguez's Machete. The Los Angeles Times is reporting a story about the upcoming thriller Paranormal Activity, which apparently scared Steven Spielberg to the point he no longer wanted the film near his home. John Horn's report goes as follows: It was early 2008, and the director's DreamWorks studio was trying to decide whether it wanted to be a part of the micro-budgeted supernatural thriller. As the story goes, Spielberg had taken a "Paranormal Activity" DVD to his Pacific Palisades estate, and not long after he watched it, the door to his empty bedroom inexplicably locked from the inside, forcing him to summon a locksmith. Malkovich Saddles Up For Secretariat

John Malkovich, Scott Glenn and Dylan Walsh have joined the cast of Secretariat, Disney's horseracing movie about a Triple Crown-winning thoroughbred and his owner Penny Chenery (Diane Lane).Based on the true-story of the chestnut colt dubbed 'Big Red', Secretariat is a nags-to-riches tale that follows Chenery's journey from callow newcomer to first lady of racing. That came in 1973, when Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in the same race season to become the first Triple Crown winner for 25 years. Click here for the full low-down.Malkovich will play Secretariat's charismatic trainer, a man whose self-assurance initially blinds him to the horse's potential. Walsh and Glenn, meanwhile, respectively star as Chenery's chauvinistic lawyer husband and the horse's former owner, a Southern aristocrat who loses him on the toss of a coin ("D'oh!").
