Missed My Name Is Earl? Time to atone

4 December 2009 6:44 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The karma-fuelled comedy My Name Is Earl is getting daily repeats on E4 – and there are plenty of reasons to catch up

My Name Is Earl is back. No, they're not making any new episodes – although one never knows with Us TV – but Earl is getting repeated, daily on E4 from tonight, which is good news for the many fans of the show and even better news for those who somehow eluded its charms over its 96-episode run.

When Earl first hit in 2005, it hit big. Impressive ratings in the States earned it a decent, prominent slot in the schedules here – unlike, say, the massively underrated and still brilliant King Of The Hill. The story of a man with a huge list of misdeeds to atone for, Earl hit its stride almost immediately. The karma-fuelled plotlines twisted and turned while exploring the locale of Camden County and its colourful denizens. »

Christmas Evil

Released in 1980 and once again we have an unstable main character who puts on the red suit and beard and gives the naughty what they deserve-and we’re not talking about lumps of coal. Arguably the best of the “Christmas Killer” movies, Christmas Evil should not be missed. This rare screening features a 35mm print from »

Pope of Trash to tour Oz

14 November 2009 10:20 PM, PST | FilmInk.com.au | See recent FilmInk.com.au news »

John Waters, cult filmmaker, writer and shock auteur supremo is coming to Australia in March to perform his one man show ‘This Filthy World'.   ‘This Filthy World', described as a vaudeville act, celebrates the film career and obsessional tastes of the man William Burroughs once called ‘The Pope of Trash'.     Focusing on Mr Waters' early negative artistic influences and his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy and the extremes of the contemporary art world, this devious monologue elevates all that is trashy in life.   Mr Waters says that he has always wanted to sell out, but the problem was nobody wanted to buy him. »

25 Most Disturbing Movies, Continued: #12: Pink Flamingos

4 November 2009 11:23 AM, PST | GreenCine | See recent GreenCine news »

We'll be counting down the top 12 Most Disturbing Movies from here on out. Read Part 1 for the previous 13 from Simon Augustine.

12. Pink Flamingos (1972) Gross-out: 7 /Artistic Merit: 8

John Waters, emerging from the depths and despair of middle-class Baltimore, was Disturbing Night At the Movies' first great Confabulist of Campiness, taking full advantage of Susan Sontag's observation's about the underhand power of “camp,” and infusing it with all the bizarre bluster, pain, confusion, humanity, resentment, irreverence and all-out bad taste you'd get if you merged the gay community with an underground-oriented Disturbist sensibility, smacking what was left of square America in 1972 square in the face.

Screen Plays: How 25 Screenplays Made it to a Theatre Near You – For Better or Worse

Screen Plays: How 25 Screenplays Made it to a Theatre Near You – For Better or Worse David S. Cohen, HarperCollins 2008. From the onset, Screen Plays looks like promising reading material for screenwriters and others interested in how screenplays make it from paper to screen. Cohen’s credits are respectable, and the promise of “valuable insider access to the back lots and board rooms” is tantalizing. The book covers some pretty good ground: from blockbusters such as Gladiator, to Indiewood hits such as Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to more controversial films such as Happiness and A Dirty Shame, it picks up a decent selection of interesting films that appeal to a broad demographic. In other words, he knows what he’s doing. Screen Plays is easy to navigate, and offers juicy little tidbits from the mouths of actors, directors, and screenwriters. The writing is simple and concise, »

Another Musical for Adam Shankman with 'Rock of Ages'

19 October 2009 10:55 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Director/choreographe Adam Shankman is no stranger to Broadway musicals as he brought the peppy 60's musical Hairspray to the big screen back in 2007. While the film was certainly a step away from the usually controversial cult classic work of John Waters that the musical was originally based on, the soundtrack was an absolute delight and almost made up for John Travolta's hideous drag of a performance (pun intended). Now Variety reports than Shankman will jump from the upbeat pop rock of the 60's to the eclectic rock anthems of the 80's, as he will direct an adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages. The musical tells the romantic tale of a couple who meets at the club Rock of Ages, right on the Sunset Strip, and the ups and downs of their love as it struggles to survive amidst their rock and roll lifestyle (it already sounds so exciting, »

Adam Shankman to Direct Rock Of Ages

19 October 2009 9:25 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Adam Shankman, who directed the movie musical version of John Waters’ “Hairspray,” is returning to the genre with “Rock of Ages,” a rock-themed 80s love story set to the tunes of Journey, Twisted Sister, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi, and Pat Benatar, among others.  More on the project after the jump.

Shankman told Variety he considers “Rock of Ages” “‘Mamma Mia!’ for dudes.”  Apparently “every guy in the audience knew the words to the songs.”  Duh, of course they did!  It’s 80s rock music!  New Line intends to start production next summer and Warner Bros. will release the flick in 2011.

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing “Hairspray” when it came out, and though it was a far cry from the best movie musical I’ve seen, Shankman is certainly more than competent with the style.  What concerns me is, according to his IMDb profile, he has over 17 project in development, »

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (October 16, 2009)

15 October 2009 6:47 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Last weekend's Equality March in Washington D.C. got me to thinking about how far we have — and haven't — come in the fight for gay equality. But since AfterElton.com focuses on pop culture, I'm going to look at things through that lens and leave the political analysis for Pam's House Blend, Americablog, Bilerico and the other assorted gay political websites that cover the topic.

One of the very first times American television addressed the subject of gay men (bisexuality was almost never addressed) was way back in 1954 when the L.A. based tabloid talk show Confidential File presented "Homosexuals and the Problems They Present." Hmm, I'm guessing it wasn't terribly flattering unless it was about how boring straight people looked in comparison to us 'mos.

San Francisco's public TV station did the first ever documentary, The Rejected in 1961 and it wasn't until 1967 that a television show first featured a gay storyline. »

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

15 October 2009 2:29 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I had a friend who had done some jail time. I was always very curious about this because I knew that it would be hugely unlikely I would ever see the inside of a cell (knock on wood). He told that one of the most beloved movies by prisoners was Wizard of Oz. This made all the sense in the world. Wizard of Oz is the ultimate escapist fantasy, which betrays the film’s original message. My thoughts after the jump.

Ironically, what people remember most is the vivid Technicolor of Oz more than the sepia toned world of Kansas. We love our family, but the imagination is stirred by everything that happens when not at home, when not in a safe place. And yet that simple message that there is no place like home, that desire to return to one’s family is pretty profound in the movie. Wizard of Oz, »

The much-talked about H.G. Lewis-inspired Smash Cut has been added to our Fango Film Fest for the inaugural Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors taking place October 30 through November 1 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas!

Able Whitman (David Hess - appearing at The Trinity!) is a horror-film director whose movies are panned by critics and audiences alike — until he starts killing people and using their body parts as props in his new flick.

Now, only intrepid Smash Cut. reporter April Carson (Sasha Grey) and celebrated private detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) stand between the demonic director and his unquenchable thirst for butchery at 24 frames per second!

Inspired by the career and filmography of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is a gore-splattered satire of the blood sport known as filmmaking.

This director's cut bleeds!
