He is a favorite casting choice of the critically praised playwright David Mamet. Im 2000, Macy appeared in a production of Mamet's "American Buffalo" (alongside Philip Baker Hall, his co-star in "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia".

Was one of Mamet's Goddard (Vt.) College students who followed him to Chicago and in 1973-74 founded the St. Nicholas Theatre Co., where Macy acted in the world premiere of Mamet's "Squirrels" and, in a transfer there from Goodman Theatre's Stage 2 series, "American Buffalo."
