Blu-Ray Review: ‘Shorts’ Long on Comic Chaos, Short on Charm

3 December 2009 5:57 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Robert Rodriguez is a one-man moviemaking machine. He’s always looking for the fastest and most cost-effective ways for getting his work out to the public. His success story, memorably chronicled in the book “Rebel Without a Crew,” is genuinely inspiring, yet his films often fail to resonate as anything other than exercises in design. In his latest film, he comes up with two multi-purpose objects (a man-made product, “the black box,” and a magical “wishing rock”) that can do pretty much anything his characters want them to do. They represent the central problem in Rodriguez’s work: he seems to think that since digital filmmaking can allow him to do anything, he should, without ever thinking it through.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

Thus, the public is treated to a shapeless, rambling bore like “Shorts,” which feels like it was slapped together in Rodriguez’s garage. Its story is told out »

Movies We Love: Fargo

2 December 2009 10:01 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Fargo (1996) I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper. Synopsis Facing a mountain of debt, Minneapolis car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) hires thugs Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife Jean (Kristin Rudrüd) and ransom her for money from his wealthy father-in-law Wade (Harve Presnell). When Carl and Gaear leave three bodies in their wake on the car ride to their hideout in Brainerd, Minnesota, the pregnant local police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) gets involved in the case. Why We Love It When he first reviewed it in 1996, Roger Ebert wrote “films like Fargo are why I love the movies.” I couldn’t say it any better myself. The crowning achievement in the illustrious careers of Joel and Ethan Coen, it’s the movie that most fully displays their preternatural knack for blending insightful character depictions with a keen sense of the ways genre work. [DVD Review] Shorts

1 December 2009 1:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When he isn’t skulking around the dark and blood-splattered alleyways of the Mexican underworld, director Robert Rodriguez runs a nice, profitable sideline in garish, high-energy kid flicks. A quick Read of his resume: Spy Kids, Once upon a time in Mexico, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl, Planet Terror, Shorts, and next up Machette, can give the impression the helmer is the ultimate proponent of the “one for them, one for me” school of filmmaking. Except, of course, they’re all for him. Once again he cheerfully does the whole shebang; writer, producer, handling the score, overseeing the effects, presumably on a diet of enough sugar to single-handedly raise the Gdp of Brazil. Perhaps he just likes the change of pace.

With that in mind this is yet another high-concept, pre-teen wish-fulfillment fantasy that finds the corporate controlled suburb of Black Falls thrown into colorful CGI chaos when »

Hawkins and H.Macy Raise Juno Temple to be a 'Dirty Girl'

30 November 2009 1:32 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

According to the trades, Temple, Sally Hawkins and William H. Macy will join Abe Sylvia on his feature length directorial debut titled Dirty Girl - I may one day eat my words on this one, but I think Juno Temple will pan out to be a better Brit find than Carey Mulligan - she was a bright spot in the ordinary Mr. Nobody and I'm looking forward in American lingo garb in Gregg Araki's Kaboom and Noah Baumbach's Greenbern). According to the trades, Temple, Sally Hawkins and William H. Macy will join Abe Sylvia on his feature length directorial debut titled Dirty Girl. According to Screen Daily, the supporting cast is comprised of newcomer Jeremy Dozier and the already cast Lisa Kudrow. A Single Shot to the Arm for David Jacobson with Fassbender Onboard

30 November 2009 1:32 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Screen Daily reports that Jacobson will be working with the not too shabby foursome of Michael Fassbender, Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church this January on A Single Shot. - I'll always wonder how much of an impact a negative box office result can have on a burgeoning career of an indie filmmaker. Profit margins is obviously not a tool to evaluate talent, and while we have ample proof of what a breakout hit can do, I'm guessing that bad B.O can surely put a hamper on future projects. David Jacobson will surely leave a larger imprint than he did with Down in the Valley, with the project he'll be shooting in the new year. Shorts DVD Review

24 November 2009 10:13 AM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Despite the familiarity of several names (Jon Cryer, James Spader, William H. Macy, and more), Shorts is a decidedly difficult movie for adults to enjoy. A product of those responsible for Spy Kids, that fact is probably a pretty good test. Similarly playing out like a live-action cartoon, those who enjoy one will likely enjoy the other. We follow a group of children and their parents as a magic rock comes into and out of their lives. The rock grants wishes, and our general play is that the idea can get a bit silly in the wrong hands. The story is told by way of Toe Thompson, a certain manner of everykid, who gets picked on quite a bit. Melding into the general plot are the lead bullies, and several other kids from school. Their parents get in on the fun as well, because our story takes place in a »

Celebrity Biography: Emma Stone

15 November 2009 9:21 AM, PST | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

Emily Jean Stone, better known as Emma Stone, was born on November 6, 1988, in Scottsdale, Arizona, the daughter of Jeff and Krista Stone, and the older sister of Spencer. Stone started acting at a relatively young age, appearing in a school production of The Wind in the Willows when she was just 11. Regional theater appearances followed and eventually, at 15, Stone convinced her parents -- using popcorn and a PowerPoint presentation, of all things, keyed to the Madonna song "Hollywood" -- to let her take a serious shot at acting, which meant relocating to Los Angeles. "I just always wanted to act from birth,” Stone told Saturday Night Magazine. "I think I was drawn to comedy originally because when I was really young, by the time I was eight, I had seen movies like The Jerk (1979), Animal House (1978), and Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) with my dad, and I knew them by heart. I loved them, »

The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Clashing News, Wolves and All

10 November 2009 6:57 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Things to know about at this week: the first Clash of the Titans teaser, Steve Guttenberg still hanging onto his 80's glory, toy movies are still wanted, and the fantastic piece of news that is the death of the Oldboy remake. What's that? That's right. Read along.

The Good

• A very good poster for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland was posted on the Mad Hatter's official Facebook page. Two more are coming, presumably on the Red Queen and White Queen pages.

• A selection of props from Duncan Jones' Moon are up for auction on eBay, including Gerty himself! It's the actual full-size thing, measuring 83” x 33” x 27.5" and even signed by the director himself. As of writing it's still bidding at £1,000, so totally affordable if you're a collector.

• After being impressed by the new trailer for The Wolfman that was released a couple of weeks back, now I'm even more impressed by the posters. »

Walken, Freeman, and Macy Team Up For The Maiden Heist

10 November 2009 8:46 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It’s hard to a fault a movie that features Christopher Walken, Morgan Freeman, and William H. Macy in key roles, even if it does look like yet another wacky heist movie featuring actors who are capable of better things. Peter Hewitt’s 2009 crime comedy “The Maiden Heist” certainly has potential, but after watching the trailer, I’m not entirely sold on the idea. I used to be able to trust Morgan Freeman, that is, until I properly investigated both “The Contract” and “The Code,” two films that are the very definition of mediocre. What’s more, it’s from the guy who directed that terrible live-action “Garfield” flick. Yikes. Perhaps “The Maiden Heist” suffers from a lackluster trailer, one that degrades the film’s overall quality. Then again, maybe not. Here’s what it’s all about: A comedy centered on three museum security guards who devise a plan »

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 8, 2009

This week:

The box office sings A Christmas Carol; Faceman visits Dark Fields; Michael Fassbender fires A Single Shot; High Fidelity guys re-team with Lay The Favorite and Helen Mirren sees Red.

Box Office

Christmas came early for Disney with A Christmas Carol. The motion capture Jim Carey film managed to snag around $31 million over the weekend.

Michael Jackson’s This is It banked about $13.4 million over the weekend after dropping less than 42 % from last weekend.

George Clooney’s The Men Who Stare At Goats and Milla Jovovich’s The Fourth Kind were almost neck and neck over the weekend with a weekend take of just under $14 million for each film.

Paranormal Activity just keep knocking at the door marked profit with another $8.5 million.

Cameron Diaz’s The Box opened with a disappointing $7.8 million. This poor opening means that the Richard Kelly film will not be in the financial Darko for a while. »

'Dirty Girl' Finds a New Company and a Colorful Cast

5 November 2009 3:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's time to go back into the memory banks a little bit. Remember when Richard Kelly started Darko Entertainment back in September of 2007? The first movie slated to hit production was Dirty Girl, with this psychological thriller called The Box slated to be movie numero dos. Now we're about to see what Kelly has in store for us with his third film, and Dirty Girl vanished into the ether ... until now.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that the movie is still in the works -- now in the hands Ideal Partners, Killer Films, and Paris Film -- and has got its cast: Juno Temple, Sally Hawkins, William H. Macy, and Lisa Kudrow. Marking Abe Sylvia's feature directorial debut, the film focuses on "a high school tramp who runs away with the school's gay, fat kid in his homophobic dad's stolen car." Got all that? Variety chose to lighten the impact »

Casting Notes: Michael Fassbender Fires A Single Shot; William H. Macy and More in Dirty Girl; Goth Icon Peter Murphy Cameos in Twilight 3

It's casting notes time again! First up, Michael Fassbender, the British film critic lieutenant from Inglourious Basterds, has been cast in the thriller A Single Shot, working under director David Jacobson. He's appearing alongside a great cast: William H. Macy, Thomas Haden Church and a newly slim Forest Whitaker. (Seriously, check out this pic of Whitaker in The Experiment. Give the guy a sandwich!) Fassbender will be a poacher on the run from killers -- we don't yet know the killers, but it's not difficult to speculate that Church and Whitaker might be the guys.[Variety] After the break, more William H. Macy news, with Juno Temple, and an on-the-nose vampiric turn from the guy who reminded us that Bela Lugosi is dead. Macy will also be in Dirty Girl, with a cast that now includes Lisa Kudrow, Sally Hawkins and Juno Temple. First-timer Abe Sylvia is directing the film about »

Sally Hawkins Finally Getting Cast In More Roles

5 November 2009 6:18 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Since she first came to the attention of many moviegoers (like myself) with her completely loony and lovable performance in Happy-Go-Lucky last year, Sally Hawkins has been pretty much missing from the movie scene. She has a tiny, tiny scene in An Education, and will be in Never Let Me Go with Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley next year, but thus far hasn't done that post-buzz overexposure-- and thank God for that. In keeping with her tendency to take roles in tiny indies, Hawkins is moving on to Dirty Girl, the directorial debut from Abe Sylvia about two teenagers-- a trampy girl and a overweight gay boy-- who team up to find the girl's real father. Variety writes that Hawkins and William H. Macy have signed on, though it doesn't say how they'll fit into the story. The movie already stars Lisa Kudrow along with Juno Temple and Jeremy Dozier, »

Michael Fassbender Takes A Single Shot

5 November 2009 3:29 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Michael Fassbender has signed on to star in the upcoming David Jacobson pic, A Single Shot. Fassbender joins Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church and will play a poacher on the lam from a pair of killers.

Fassbender recently starred as Lt. Archie Hicox in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and in the critically acclaimed Fish Tank. His magnanimous portrayal of Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's Hunger proved that actors, unlike Orson Welles - bless him for trying in The Lady From Shanghai - don't have to be Irish to do an Irish accent.

So it would seem Fassbender is set to dive into mainstream stardom. The brilliant actor is on George Miller's shortlist to star in Mad Max IV: Fury Road. Although not entirely bankable as an action star at this point, he seems to be testing the water with the lead in Neil Marshall »

A Single Shot For Michael Fassbender
