(Julia Wakeham and director/actor Liam O Mochain in Wc, above.)
by Alan Kline
When I first visited Irish filmmaker Liam O Mochain ten years ago on the set of his debut feature, The Book That Wrote Itself, one of the first things I noticed was that he had managed to pull together production elements that would have been difficult for a film with ten times the budget. On the first day, he had managed to get the City of Dublin to give him a double-decker bus, complete with driver, to shoot on throughout the city. I, and a few dozen other tourists, had just paid the equivalent of $20 each for a tour on a similar bus, just the day before. Later in the production, he visited the Venice Film Festival with a small crew, attended a press conference, and asked a variety of celebrity luminaries questions, in character as Vincent, »

I saw quite a bit this week, but some of it I have already detailed such as my reviews for Trucker and Tormented. I also watched the Blu-ray for Love, Actually (a personal favorite and a review is forth-coming) as well as the following three films.
The second two (The Sniper and 5 Against the House) are both from the November 3 release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Film Noir Collection Volume One. You can get more details on the complete set right here and I hope to discuss the other three films (The Big Heat, The Lineup and Murder by Contract) next Sunday or perhaps in a complete review.
As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, »

Are you finding it increasingly harder to take the changing physicality of Hollywood actors?
Things change; they grow old, they morph, and sometimes even evolve. It's a fact of life, and usually a good fact of life. But lately, I find myself constantly having to try and ignore certain physical aspects to enjoy a trailer, an image, a film. Rather than absorbing the project, the mood, the plot, I'm trying to blur my eyes so Mr. or Ms. So-and-So doesn't look quite so silly.
On the one hand, of course, it's the plastic surgery. Practically everyone in Tinseltown does something. There's no way everyone has smooth foreheads and bright skin. But when the random nose job or improvement turns into new cheeks, chin, or balloonish lips until the original person is nowhere to be seen, it becomes too much. If this was happening to actors known for morphing into characters, »

The world of underground fighting has been brought to adequate life in the aptly titled Fighting. Thoroughly predictable yet oddly entertaining, this fight flick should please fans of Ufc-style bouts. It appears as though the filmmakers set out to make Rocky for a hipper (read: Add-afflicted) generation, but it’s really not fair to compare that seminal Oscar-winning film with this one. Fighting definitely ain’t winning awards any time soon, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Find out why after the jump.
That blandly hot piece of meat known as Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Whatever) stars as Sean MacArthur, an inept New York street hustler recently arrived from Alabama. When a fight breaks out on the street Sean manages to beat down three dudes and catches the eye of promoter Harvey Boarden who, unfortunately, is played by Terence Howard (Iron Man). Harvey soon »

Melanie Griffith voluntarily checked herself into rehab last week at Utah's Cirque Lodge. Her reps say it's a routine stay to "reinforce her commitment to stay healthy" (kind of like a dental cleaning?). Rumors say her hubby, the "too-sexy" Antonio Banderas, is fed up with her drinking and gave her an ultimatum. We say she wants more jewelry, since last time she got out of rehab Antonio showered her with a $40,000 congratulatory diamond-and-platinum bracelet.
Whatever the real reason for the trip to Utah, we do wish Melanie luck. Despite her numerous treatments in the past and the seemingly endless tragic Hollywood addiction stories (like the recent death of D.J. Am), Tinseltown is also filled with its share of successes. Check out this list of celebrities who've been able to beat their own demons after one (or more) stints in rehab. »

Melanie Griffith is having therapy sessions with her family. Her husband Antonio Banderas - with who she has 12-year-old daughter Stella, while Melanie has two other children from previous relationships - insists Melanie will only benefit from her time in rehab if all her loved ones support her.
He told U.S. TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres: "We have been following some type of therapy with other families. There are a number of invisible heroes working in Alcoholics Anonymous all around the world. I just say to families, 'Don't get embarrassed, just confront this problem head-on. And don't hide from that because there is a beautiful gift at the end of this tunnel, and it is the person that you love back, and that is what I am searching for.'"
Melanie, 52, checked into Utah's Cirque Lodge - where Lindsay Lohan and Kristen Dunst previously received treatment - in August. »

Antonio Banderas spoke candidly on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" about his wife Melanie Griffith's struggle with addiction -- and he reveals why she recently headed to rehab after being sober for years. "Melanie has been an addict for many years, and we always came out and we said it out loud," Antonio tells Ellen on her talk show, airing Wednesday. "It was ok. We were never embarrassed of the situation." Antonio, 49, goes on to reveal how Melanie, 52, slipped back into addiction after accomplishing six years of sobriety. "She had a crash, skiing in Aspen a year-and-a-half ago," the actor explains, saying Melanie was "obligated" to use narcotics after the accident. Antonio also shot down rumors that he threatened to divorce Melanie after learning of her recent struggles, saying, "The whole entire family is supporting her. I am supporting her, this particular time more than ever…I am very proud of her. »

Actress Melanie Griffith checked into rehab after fearing she was too "weak" to resist her urge for drugs, her husband Antonio Banderas has revealed.
The 52 year old has been seeking treatment at the Cirque Lodge in Utah since the end of August.
Representatives for the star had previously refused to disclose the reason for her stay but Spanish actor Banderas has now spoken out, admitting she turned to professionals in a bid to prevent a relapse into the narcotic addiction she suffered from for years.
Griffith battled drink and drugs in the 1970s and 80s, and spent time in rehab in 1998 and again in 2000 in an effort to kick an addiction to prescription painkillers.
The Shrek star has also used the opportunity to dismiss reports his marriage is collapsing under the strain of Griffith's troubles.
He tells U.S. talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres, "Let me explain to you. It was actually in some magazine that I said that I gave an ultimatum to my wife. That I present the matter of divorce (sic) because she has been involved in addictions and blah, blah, blah...
"Melanie has been addicted for many years and we always came out. We said it out loud. It was Ok, we were never embarrassed of the situation but... she was clean and sober for six years."
However, Griffith felt her resolve weaken after three operations on her knee following a skiing accident at the start of 2008 and feared taking the medication she was prescribed to numb the pain would tempt her back onto harder drugs.
Banderas adds, "In March, she came to me and said, 'I'm feeling a little bit weak in my determination for this (to stay sober)... so I just thought to go to rehabilitation by myself.'"
Griffith has her whole family behind her in her battle to stay clean - and her relatives even attend group therapy sessions with the embattled star.
Banderas says, "We have been following some type of therapy with other families. There are a number of invisible heroes working in AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) all around the world. I just say to families, 'Don't get embarrassed, just confront this problem head-on. And don't hide from that because there is a beautiful gift at the end of this tunnel, and it is the person that you love back, and that is what I am searching for.
"So the whole entire family is supporting her, and I am supporting her, and at this particular time more than ever. I'm very proud of her." »

Antonio Banderas has opened up about why his wife Melanie Griffith decided to check into rehab, claiming that it was triggered by a skiing accident. The Working Girls star, who has battled addiction in the past, confirmed that she was entering a facility last month as part of a "routine plan" designed by her doctors. "She was clean and sober for six years," Access Hollywood quotes him as telling Ellen DeGeneres. Antonio Banderas' marriage to Melanie Griffith isn't on the rocks. In fact, he couldn't be more proud of his wife. In an interview airing on today's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Spanish hunk reveals his movie-star wife decided to enter a rehab clinic to conquer an addiction to pain medication—not because their 15-year-old marriage was in trouble as some tabloids claimed. "It was said actually in some magazine that I gave an ultimatum to my wife. That I present the matter of divorce because she has been involved in addictions and blah, blah, blah," said the 49-year-old Banderas. In a visit to "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," actor Antonio Banderas said it was his wife Melanie Griffith's own decision to admit herself to rehab after pain medication following surgery caused some concern.
Griffith, 52, was clean for six years, then she was injured in a skiing accident a year and a half ago. Three operations on her knee required the actress to start using narcotics.

Antonio Banderas is speaking out for the first time about his wife Melanie Griffith recently entering rehab. A few weeks ago, Mel unexpectedly entered the Cirque Lodge in Utah to “get rid of her demons.” What those “demons” were exactly, we weren’t sure. We’d heard talk that Antonio had given Melanie an ultimatum to get clean and sober once and for all. Antonio appeared as a guest on Ellen Degeneres, and said, "It's not a rumor, but let me explain to you.” He went on to say, "It was said actually in some magazine that I said... »

Antonio Banderas is not leaving his sometimes drug-addicted wife Melanie Griffith, who checked into rehab last week for a 'routine' visit. "She's doing fantastic and very little of what is being published is true," he told Extra TV. "I am not going away." Fox News reported that Griffith's trip to rehab was not planned but rather the result of Banderas' refusal to continue putting up with her insane demands, such as insisting all her food be yellow. Actress Melanie Griffith recently went to Utah's Cirque Lodge Rehab Facility, where actresses Lindsay Lohan and Kirsten Dunst went for similar treatment. Her publicist said it was Griffith's "commitment to stay healthy" for the reason for her admission, but Fox news reported otherwise, that Melanie had checked herself in because her husband Antonio Banderas, 49, had put his foot down over her "erratic" behavior. Fox news claimed that their source told them that Griffith "had a multitude of crazy demands, including insisting everything around her, from the food to the flowers, be yellow." Now, "The Other Man" star Antonio Banderas reports things are going swimmingly for his wife, and that very little about what's been reported about his wife Melanie »

Rangers and animal handlers at actress Tippi Hedren's Shambala Preserve big cat sanctuary in Acton, California have been told to consider evacuating the property as wildfires creep ever closer.
But staff at the wildlife mecca have chosen to stay and fight the blaze rather than try to relocate the 64 lions, tigers, leopards and other exotic animals, including two tigers Michael Jackson once owned, that live there.
Vice president of operations at Shambala Chris Gallucci says, "We have everything to fight fires on this property. Our plan is to hold in place. We have done this for 40 years. We are very good at what we do."
According to Gallucci, the preserve has dozens of evacuation crates on standby just in case the big cats really need to be moved.
The area around the preserve is under a mandatory evacuation order, according to the Los Angeles Times as the Mount Wilson fire, which is only five per cent contained, threatens thousands of properties.
The news of the wildfire threat comes just a week after Hedren's daughter, actress Melanie Griffith, entered rehab in Utah for a "undisclosed issues."
Meanwhile, animals trained for movies like Dr. Dolittle 2 and {Mowgli: The New Adventures of The Jungle Book escaped a fiery death over the weekend when trainer Scott Handley evacuated his sanctuary near to Hedren's in Acton as wildfires blazed through the area.
Handley's wilderness area, where bears and big cats roamed free, was left charred by the flames, which started last week (ends28Aug09) - but the animal expert's home was saved by firefighters.
A source says, "No animals were harmed - they were all safely relocated before the fire arrived on the property." »

Melanie Griffith knows all too well the challenges of getting - and staying - sober. The actress, who underwent treatment twice for substance abuse in 1988 and 2000, checked into a rehab facility, her rep said Monday, to "reinforce her commitment to stay healthy." Her third stint in rehab marks what has been an on-again, off-again battle with addiction for the past three decades. Admitting she has "an addictive personality," Griffith, 52, once told Australian magazine New Idea four years after her first trip to rehab that she's "lucky to be alive. I was never as bad as some people I knew, shooting heroin and stuff. »
