I was just having a conversation the other day about how awesome Michael Biehn is and how it's too bad he cut from Avatar. Last time I saw Biehn in a film was Planet Terror, but now he's back with his own film called Blood Bond which looks and sounds a lot like the straight to VHS actioners I used to rent with friends as a kid.
Synopsis:
A world-renowned spiritual leader, Bagawans Muktananda, arrives in the Asian nation of Bandanesia to give a teaching to the faithful. Accompanying him is a retinue of monks and attendants, including his personal bodyguard, Deva (Phoenix Chou), a beautiful Eurasian girl with extraordinary physical prowess.
Welcoming Bagawans is security commander Chow (Simon Yam). As soon as Bagawans and his party reach their hotel, they are attacked by assassins from a rebel terrorist group.
Wounded, Bagawans needs to undergo a life-saving operation within 12 hours. »

Though we're likely still a ways off from a proper theatrical trailer for Michael Biehn's directorial debut The Blood Bond a new sales reel has just arrived. And it's looking pretty fun, I have to say, in a very early 1980's sort of way. It's not that he's going self-consciously retro here but Biehn is, after all, a man who spent his formative years in a string of 1980s action hits and that influence is obvious here. And good on him for that because I miss those days.
For those who have missed our earlier coverage of this one, here's the synopsis again:
A world-renowned spiritual leader, Bagawans Muktananda, arrives in the Asian nation of Bandanesia to give a teaching to the faithful. Accompanying him is a retinue of monks and attendants, including his personal bodyguard, Deva (Phoenix Chou), a beautiful Eurasian girl with extraordinary physical prowess.

Oh, Bey. That's just not fair. With The Blood Bond - the debut feature from Bey Logan's start up production house B&E Productions - now in post production, the label has announced the rest of their upcoming production slate.
And what do you think is going to attract all the attention? Will it be animated feature Little Gobie? Michael Wong's Rogue Option? Or, perhaps, could it be Choy Li Fut, a period action film to be co-produced by and star the iconic Gordon Liu?
Nope. Not when the next film to go into production is beach volleyball themed action comedy Beach Spike, starring Chrissie Chau - pictured above - and The Blood Bond's Phoenix Chou. Let's be honest. This could be horrible and still make a big bag of money.
Find details on the entire slate below:

With The Crazies (review here) remake bursting down our door, I thought it would be a good opportunity for Dread Central to look back at some of the most memorable virus/outbreak movies of the genre’s past. It’s a slippery slope when determining what constitutes a viral plague versus a standard zombie apocalypse, but I boiled my criteria down to one basic rule: The carnage must be driven by an infection, and re-animated corpses crawling out of the dirt need not apply.
Here goes nothing. And make sure to join me in the discussion below. Part of the reason I enjoy making these lists so much is to hear what other like-minded horror fans think. What did I miss? What shouldn’t have been included (I can hear some of those now)?

Breck Eisner’s The Crazies is a movie unashamed of what it is; a zombie-centric gallery of jump-scares and gore moments. There’s the quaint little town where things start to go horribly wrong, the erstwhile sheriff who wrings his hands with each new terrible discovery, and of course, an endless number of scenes where characters wander into the dark and are immediately pounced upon by the soundtrack. It might sound like I’m slagging the movie, but I’m not. The Crazies is a bloody good time and it works because of these elements.
It’s been years since I’ve seen Romero’s original, but the new film feels like it lives right down the road from that one. Ogden Marsh is a happy, sleepy little burg in Iowa; one of those cinematic farm towns where everyone shows up to the little league games like they were the World Series. »

It's been a wild couple weeks for the Terminator franchise. A week ago, hedge fund Pacificor purchased the rights to the Terminator franchise through an auction, clearly finding the franchise worthy of further sequels. Days later, The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day co-writer William Wisher complied with ideas for two more sequels.
According to Deadline Hollywood, Wisher has written a 24-page treatment for a fifth and sixth Terminator, which would include elements of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation, while concentrating on characters Kyle Reece and Sarah Connors, (played by Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton in the original) in a post-apocalyptic battleground in a story that would involve time travel. The sixth movie would include an appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger in a role with a surprising twist, and both sequels would include new villains such as "night crawlers" which jump out of the dirt to attack »

Michael Biehn aka Hicks in a genre movie always means good times. Throw in Cary Elwes of “Saw” fame (or for you hopeless romantics out there, Wesley) and you can count on some good fun, even in the midst of the blood and guts; the guy always makes me chuckle for some reason. The two’s latest is the psychological horror/thriller “Psych 9″ from director Andrew Shortell. The film co-stars Sara Foster, who actually anchors the film. The plot finds her linking a series of murders in town to the creepy place she’s currently working. Nothing good ever happens in creepy places, to be sure, but maybe Hicks can save her. I'll always remember the first time I watched Aliens for two reasons: the first was that James Cameron's sci-fi action scared the living daylights out of me (at the tender age of 12, those chest-bursters were pretty horrifying) but the second reason, and the subject of today's discussion, is that it was the first time I started to think that maybe boys weren't so icky after all. That's right, in the midst of watching one of the greatest action films ever made, I fell a little bit in love with Corporal Dwayne Hicks (played by Michael Biehn). Now as I've grown up, my practical adult brain knows that Hicks is just a variation of the strong and silent type that pops up in most movies (especially James Cameron movies), but that doesn't change the fact that when it comes down to it, Hicks was my very first movie crush.
