Johnny Depp enters the revolving door of The Tourist

2 hours ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

If you follow the production of films you will soon become aware that many changes often take place on the journey from script to celluloid.

But even by those standards, The Tourist has gone through a surprising number of cast and crew members coming and going.

The latest to arrive through the project's revolving door is Johnny Depp, who is now in talks to play the lead role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Initially, Bharat Nalluri was on board to direct the thriller, with Tom Cruise in the lead. Charlize Theron was set to co-star.

But then Cruise left and Sam Worthington was brought in as a replacement.

After that, Charlize Theron departed and in came Angelina Jolie. Bharat Nalluri dropped out and the studio brought in German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.

Following that, Sam Worthington dropped out and von Donnersmarck moved on. Alfonso Cuaron is now heading for the director's chair. »

Salt Script Review

19 hours ago | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

When Kurt Wimmer’s (Equilibrium) script for Salt was originally picked up by Columbia Pictures, Tom Cruise was attached for the lead.  However, scheduling conflicts or it’s resemblance to Mission: Impossible caused him to take a walk, leaving the role wide open for Angelina Jolie.

A few gender tweaks were all they needed to turn this Cold War thriller into an action vehicle for a strong woman.  Having read the script, audiences are in for one hell of an awesome flick in July 2010.

The trailer indicates there have been some changes since Wimmer’s draft, which received rewrites by Brian Helgeland (Oscar winning screenwriter of Mystic River).  For example, a key assassination attempt is shown as an explosion rather than the sniper operation described in the script’s quickly-turning pages.  But it’s clear from the trailer that one thing remains as the core element in the film: this »

Crashville: The Risky Route To Oscar Glory

20 hours ago | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

In March 2006 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sprung one of its annual surprises by awarding the best picture Oscar to Crash, rather than Ang Lee’s acclaimed gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain. At the time it looked as though racism and multiple vehicular pile-ups had trumped homosexuality in the battle of the “hot button” issue movies. But perhaps the Academy was belatedly acknowledging the kind of ambitious, densely plotted, multi-character dramas made famous by the great Robert Altman. From 1975’s Nashville, to Short Cuts, Prêt à Porter and his 2006 swansong A Prairie Home Companion, Altman allowed audiences to immerse themselves in the cinematic equivalent of a book of short stories. Writer Alissa Quart has characterised these films with multiple intersecting plotlines as “hyperlink movies”, in which, “information, character, and action co-exist without hierarchy”. Now I’m a fan of Altman and I loved Paul Thomas Anderson’s, »

Christmas is coming, and Disney’s getting fat

6 November 2009 2:18 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Christmas is a bit like the flu. You are forced to lie around all day, watch crap TV, consume lots of food you wouldn’t normally eat, and each year both seem to arrive earlier and than the last. This year I had flu fashionably early, setting the trend  in July while London’s utterly loathsome and incompetent  major, Boris Johnson has been bribed by Disney to switch on the Oxford Street Christmas lights purely to coincide with the release of, A Christmas Carol, this week. They even allowed the films star Jim Carrey to switch the buggers on!!!!!  Yet, directed by Robert (Forest Gump , Back to the Future) Zemeckis this 3D animated adaptation of the Dickens tale is not aimed at kids of all ages. I’d say, due to it’s thoroughly creepy protagonists, nightmarish scenes of ghouls taking their jaws off and spectres chasing ol’ Scrooge through dark alleys, »

Box office preview: 'A Christmas Carol' set to bring some cheer to the box office

5 November 2009 4:02 PM, PST | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

Feeling merry? Disney and Robert Zemeckis sure hope so as they prepare to unload the technologically obsessed filmmaker's vision of Dickens' classic holiday tale, A Christmas Carol, in over 3,500 theaters (2,000 of which will be 3-D). Carol starring Jim Carrey may be Zemeckis' most successful debut using his beloved motion-capture technology -- which seems to have finally overcome the "hollowed eyes" criticism that befell his earlier attempts like Polar Express and Beowulf. Now it's really just going to come down to how many people are ready for some Christmas spirit this early in the fall season. (Some of us still haven't disposed of our jack-o'-lantern remains. »

Johnny Depp in talks to replace Sam Worthington in ‘The Tourist’

5 November 2009 9:06 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

The large round of musical chairs for the The Tourist continues.

Last month we reported that Angelina Jolie replaced Charlize Theron on the American remake of French film Anthony Zimmer and now it seems like Johnny Depp is in talks to replace Australian actor Sam Worthington. The role originally had Tom Cruise slated to star.

Depp would play an American tourist drawn into a “web of intrigue by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who is attempting to locate a criminal who was once her lover.”

The 2005 French film Anthony Zimmer was directed by Jérôme Salle. It starred the lovely Sophie Marceau and Yvan Attal.

Jolie remains on the project, however, along with Worthington, original director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck has left the project.  Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron still in talks to replace him.

The Tourist is still on schedule to begin production in February.

Johnny Depp Replacing Sam Worthington In ‘The Tourist?’

5 November 2009 7:38 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

When does the movie business ever go as planned? Rarely, it seems, as evidenced by the change-ups with the upcoming thriller The Tourist, the remake of the 2005 French film, Anthony Zimmer.

We recently reported that Angelina Jolie had replaced Charlize Theron in the movie, with Jolie joining the already-cast Sam Worthington (who originally replaced Tom Cruise). Then a week later came news that after previously attached director Bharat Nalluri had stepped away from the project, The Lives of Other director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was being eyed to helm the film instead.

All seemed to be in place and The Tourist was set for an early 2010 shooting start. However, although the latter is still true, there appears to Still be major change-ups happening, as not only is yet another new director being looked at to now replace Donnersmarck, but Worthington may be getting replaced by Johnny Depp!

Angelina Jolie May Now Be Traveling With Johnny Depp And A 'Harry Potter' Director In 'The Tourist'

5 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"The Tourist" has had quite a ride these past few months. Further back than that even. First it was a possible "Valkyrie" follow-up for Tom Cruise. Then Charlize Theron started negotiating to star alongside Cruise. Following a year of silence on the project, the news broke last month that Angelina Jolie was now in talks to replace Theron. And somewhere in there, "Terminator Salvation" star Sam Worthington stepped in to replace Cruise.

That's not even mentioning the director changes. Bharat Nalluri was originally set to direct, way back when Cruise was still on the project. He fell off somewhere in the past year, and "The Lives of Others" director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck only recently stepped in to possibly replace him. It turns out that that's not happening either. Now it seems that "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" director Alfonso Cuaron may be moving in to helm, and »

Johnny Depp May Be Part of The Tourist

5 November 2009 5:52 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

And then again, he might not. There have been so many names linked to this remake of the French thriller that it's nearly impossible to take any casting news seriously. Johnny Depp's just the latest big name to be rumored to be attached to The Tourist. Depp follows the exit of Sam Worthington (Avatar) who replaced Tom Cruise, etc., etc., etc. The only 99.9% confirmed actor involved in The Tourist is Oscar winner Angelina Jolie who replaced Oscar winner Charlize Theron back in October.

In addition, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting newly appointed director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, the German filmmaker who took over the job when Bharat Nalluri walked away, is also now off the film. Talk about your snakebit movies...

Cuaron and Depp Find Its a High Season for 'The Tourist'

5 November 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- The French film from which The Tourist is based from (Anthony Zimmer) contains a narrative DNA that is very kaiser soze, but to be frank about it, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Spyglass Entertainment is seeing a lot of action for a tale about a wanted man...its mostly due to scheduling conflicts. Male lead Sam Worthington has jumped ship and an even better replacement in Johnny Depp might take the part. Meanwhile, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck who just recently considered taking helming duties has dropped the pic, and Alfonso Cuaron, who showed off some skill with the thriller format in Children of Men (that infamous scene with Julianne Moore at the wheel is stellar) is looking to replace him. Scripted by Julian Fellowes, Bill Wheeler and Chris McQuarrie, this concerns an American tourist (formerly Tom Cruise, then Sam Worthington and perhaps Depp) who finds »

Johnny Depp joining The Tourist?

Johnny Depp is the latest actor to consider starring in action thriller remake The Tourist. We're seriously beginning to wonder if the producers did something terrible in a former life as this film has seen more problems on its way to the screen than most recent releases. Let's run down the list, shall we? First up, the plan was to team director Bharat Nalluri with Tom Cruise for a movie that sees Cruise's everyman visitor to France being caught up in a female Interpol officer's (Charlize Theron) plan to catch her former, criminal...

Johnny Depp in Talks for The Tourist

5 November 2009 12:41 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Can't get enough Johnny Depp? If yesterday's news that he is still attached to play Tonto in a live-action Lone Ranger movie wasn't enough for you, now Variety is reporting that Depp may be saddling up with Angelina Jolie in The Tourist.

Graham King's Gk Films is producing The Tourist, which has gone through a number of major changes since it was first announced. Originally, Spyglass planned on developing the movie with Bharat Nalluri directing Charlize Theron and Tom Cruise. Cruise bowed out, to be replaced by Sam Worthington, who subsequently left the movie, as well. When Nalluri also left the project, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck came aboard to direct, bringing Jolie in to replace Theron. Since then, von Donnersmarck has also departed. Will shooting still begin in February 2010, as planned? Your guess is as good as ours.
