Below the Fold: Our Weekend Wrap-Up Has No Harvey for Spielberg, Moneyball Gets Director, New Line Nutcracker!

Harvey Project Dumped by Spielberg

Steven Spielberg has withdrawn from his remake of the classic film, Harvey. He spent the past half year developing the pic, his first directing vehicle for the reconstituted DreamWorks. The film was going to be a re-adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play written by Mary Chase and was to be written for the screen by popular novelist Jonathan Tropper.

Spielberg delivered earlier this week to 20th Century Fox, which had agreed to have DreamWorks finance 50% of production through its new funding relationship with Reliance and distribute domestically or internationally through its arrangement with Disney.

Variety reports it “has been a challenge to pull together since Spielberg committed last August. One of the biggest challenges has been setting a star to play Elwood P. Dowd, the character played by James Stewart in the 1950 film.”

Would You Do...Katie With This Mouthful?

5 December 2009 7:17 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Being married to superstar?and superexacting?megaman Tom Cruise must take its toll at times. Clearly, being the much touted third wife to still very handsome Cruise must cause one to crack (or chomp), on occasion. We suspect poor Katie Holmes, who's really just a sweet li'l Ohio babe at heart, has reached one of those breaking points, and it's damn well about time! Probably in her most un-red-carpet moment to date, Suri?s mama is lookin? more her natural self in rumpled everything as she grabs some fried potato snacks, with ketchup, in between filming scenes on the Long Island set of her latest flick, The Romantics. She's even wearing friggin' sweats! Posh Beckham would probably pretend she... »

Taylor Lautner is this year's boy: Paramount eyes for Max Steel

4 December 2009 11:35 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Team Jacob fans have some crowing to do. The sexy 17 (17!) year-old Taylor Lautner has eclipsed pasty, broody Robert Pattinson as the man of the year and The Next Big Thing in Hollywood. The man who muddies the great romance between Bella and Edward is set for the path of box office top dog. Tom Cruise? Will Smith? Brad Pitt? Ciao pescao. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood broke an exclusive about Lautner, revealing: "Paramount has confirmed to me exclusively that it's hired 8-pack-abs Taylor Lautner for the lead in Max Steel, instantly creating perhaps the next young big action star." Team Jacob, start your engines. Finke blogs that the movie "Max Steel" will be "a four-quadrant popcorn movie in »

Christmas Comes Early For Pilot Freeman

4 December 2009 5:31 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Morgan Freeman has treated himself to an early Christmas present - his own private plane.

The actor, who endured a stint in the U.S. Air Force as a young adult, began learning to fly in 2002 and quickly went on to earn his pilot's licence.

Freeman, now an expert in the skies, recently bought his first jet - and he's christening the aircraft by taking it on a journey around the world.

He explains, "I'm flying from here (U.S.) to South Africa. Then, since we've got some business down there, we're going to Botswana... then we're going to go to Kenya, northern Kenya, because we've been invited to visit a local tribe.

"The reason we're doing all this is because I've got my own plane. Brand new. Me and my co-pilot (will be flying it)."

And Freeman brags his plane is fully fitted with such up-to-date equipment his jet would likely put other celebrity pilots and their planes to shame.

He adds, "I started flying in '02. I've got everything that the law requires (fitted to my plane), and then some."

Freeman joins a select high-flying club - Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Angelina Jolie, Hilary Swank and supermodel Gisele Bundchen are all keen pilots. »

The Naughts: The Actress of the '00s

4 December 2009 10:17 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

If time is an avenger, then the Naughts have had it both ways with Nicole Kidman. In the span of a decade, Kidman was transformed from arm candy into an artist -- the rare movie star who made genuinely interesting choices -- eclipsing her ex-husband, Tom Cruise, who filed for divorce in 2000, with an Oscar win and the embrace, finally, of her peers on her own terms.

However, as the '00s limp to a close, Kidman seems to be succumbing to a personal vendetta against time: by manipulating her face into a mask -- a waxworks ideal of "Nicole Kidman" -- rather than continuing to deploy it as a functional instrument, an artist's tool, Kidman is taking perhaps the most surprising risk of her career: she has chosen to age into glacial iconicity. In this, she exemplifies a decade that treated actresses with ambivalence, waving all the flags of »

The ‘Dark Knight’ star and husband Peter Sarsgaard are usually able to walk around New York unnoticed so were amazed when “tons” of paparazzi came into a cafe where they were enjoying coffee, only to then be ignored.

She told website E! Online: "There were a ton of paparazzi in the cafe with their huge cameras and laptops. I was like, 'Peter, oh my God, they are so into us. They're swarming us. We are so important.'

"It turns out Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were living on that street. It was the winter, so the photographers would go into the cafe to download their pictures."

Pt Anderson’s Next Film is About Scientology

3 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of such brilliant films as There Will Be Blood and Magnolia, has announced his next film.  Tentatively titled The Master, the period drama will focus on a “master of ceremonies” or a charismatic intellectual who creates his own religion in 1952.

The great Philip Seymour Hoffman is set to star in the Universal-produced project, re-teaming with Anderson after supporting roles in four of his films, including Punch-Drunk Love and Boogie Nights.  As if I needed another reason to be pumped about PTA behind the camera, Psh is in front of it.

The story focuses on the relationship between the Master and Freddie, a twentysomething drifter and his second in command when establishing the religion.  As the faith grows in popularity, Freddie questions his Master and the belief system.  The right hand man is uncast.

Variety deliberately points out the film does not scrutinize self-started churches like Scientology or the Mormons, »

Days of Glory: out of Africa, into French hypocrisy

3 December 2009 12:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Rachid Bouchareb's moving 2006 portrait of the forgotten heroes of the Free French army is not just accurate, it's important

Director: Rachid Bouchareb

Entertainment grade: B+

History grade: B

After the German conquest of France in the second world war, the Free French army drummed up recruits from its African colonies to bolster its comeback.

The Third Algerian Infantry Division fought in the Italian campaign and Operation Dragoon, and would eventually head the advance of II Corps to Stuttgart.

People

North African troops had fought for France as far back as the Crimean war, and west Africans from the first world war. The film's characters are fictional, but plausible. "We must wash the French flag with our blood!" cries an Algerian recruiter. "We must liberate France!" Based on that long history, these Africans think of France as their homeland – la patrie. The film's French title, Indigènes (Natives), is clever: it's a mildly offensive colonial term, »

Barbara Walters's 10 Fascinating People of 2009 Will Include Exploited Kids, Thank God

2 December 2009 10:20 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

In 2007 she chose Victoria Beckham. Last year she chose Will Smith and Tom Cruise. And now, for this year's "10 Most Fascinating People" special, Barbara Walters will recap 2009 by interviewing another handful of celebrities who come factory-built with soundbites (Kate Gosselin, Lady Gaga) and discussing the most talked-about veiled youngsters of the year -- Michael Jackson's children. I can't decide what's worse: waiting on whether they'll be interviewed by the most self-consciously austere interviewer in primetime, or if "experts" will fill time and weigh in on their strife for an 11-minute segment. A near-full list of fascinating people, and a proposal for a more interesting way to organize this tradition, after the jump. »

To celebrate their 20th birthday, Empire Magazine invited a whole ton of actors and actresses to ever-so-briefly reprise their most iconic roles for a pretty cool photo shoot. Curious to see what Arnold Schwarzenegger would look like now if he donned those famous black sunglasses and threw on his best badass pose for a photo in front of a motorcycle? Or what about wanting to see Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster reunited for the first time since the Oscar-winning Silence of the Lambs?

Other cool photo ops include Mel Gibson wearing face paint in honor of Braveheart, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost looking back at Shaun of the Dead, Christian Bale returning to his American Psycho days, Ben Stiller showing us all that Zoolander totally deserves a sequel, Gerard Butler giving us his best 300 roar, Laurence Fishburne calling back Morpheus and more. Exclusive: First look at Invasion

From the days back in the 1950s when James Arness played a walking space vegetable in The Thing, the alien invasion genre has been a successful one for Hollywood. And if there's gold to still be mined in those storytelling hills, why not? Steven Spielberg has given us his version of War of the Worlds, M. Night Shyamalan made a nicely told chiller about one family staying alive in Signs (which is still a decent enough movie if you stop it 10 minutes before the end of the film.) Both of those pictures went on to make over $200 million dollars at the domestic box office; more importantly they proved to the Hollywood bean counters that audiences will still pay to see the Earth get mean new landlords from beyond the stars. Right now Columbia Pictures is about to go into production with Battle: Los Angeles, Twilight author Stephanie Meyer's The »
