Serbian director Emir Kusturica is in advanced negotiations for Johnny Depp to take on the title role in Mexican revolutionary hero Pancho Villa biopic.
The movie, based on the biographical novel “The Friends of Pancho Villa” written by author James Carlos Blake, is titled “Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers.”
James Carlos Blake recounts how Villa and his loyal companions had the time of their lives robbing from the rich, partying, dancing, drinking Tequila, and making love.
The script, which is written by Kusturica and Gordan Mihic is completed, although lensing is not set to start until 2011 due to Depp’s prior commitments.
The drama, which revolves around an early 20th Century bandit who became a guerilla fighter and hero to the poor, will have Depp acting in Spanish. The Spanish-language biopic will be shot partly in Mexico.
Villa has previously been played onscreen by Antonio Banderas, »

Johnny Depp is in talks to become the latest big name to play Mexican bandit revolutionary Pancho Villa in a new movie.
The movie star is slated to lead the cast of Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica's biopic, The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers.
The Spanish-language film will be shot partly in Mexico in 2011 and Depp's Once Upon A Time In Mexico co-star Salma Hayek is in negotiations to co-star, according to Variety.
If the film comes together, it won't be the first time Depp and Kusturica have worked together - they previously collaborated on 1993 movie Arizona Dream.
Antonio Banderas, Telly Savalas and Leo Carrillo are among the stars who have portrayed Pancho Villa in the movies.
The real revolutionary, aka Jose Doroteo Arango Arambula, played himself in silent movie mogul D.W. Griffith's The Life of General Villa in 1914. »

It took a millennium for western civilisation to create a canon of classical literature – but just 10 years for Hollywood to destroy it
When I think back on this decade's spate of movies based on the great legends of European history, I remember how fantastically it started – with Gladiator – and how badly things went downhill after that: with Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, 300 and Beowulf. When I saw Gladiator in 2000, I thought this was going to be just the best millennium ever. It had everything you could want in a movie: glory, gore, guts, gladiators. It was a sweeping epic with a computer-generated cast of thousands. Augustus Caesar would have been proud of it. Julius and Tiberius, too.
Yet the thing I liked most about Ridley Scott's superb film was how closely it hewed to the historical record, in its portrayal of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) as the depraved son of Marcus Aurelius, »

Serbian director Emir Kusturica is ready to make a movie about Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. He's given it a ridiculously long title -- Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers (dear God, I hope they change that) -- and he's out on the town, looking for talent. Luckily, he appears to have found some major talent in the likes of Johnny Depp and Salma Hayek. According to Variety, Depp is in "advanced negotiations" to star as Pancho Villa. He would join a legion of actors who have played the iconic revolutionary (who oddly, does not have his own t-shirt like Ché). The list includes Yul Brenner (Villa Rides, 1968) and Antonio Banderas (And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself, 2003). What's more interesting is that the Spanish-language biopic is to be shot partly in Mexico, where Villa -- an early 20th-century bandit who became a guerilla fighter and a hero to the poor -- is an »

The former Smiths guitarist is to compose the music for a movie starring Antonio Banderas and Snoop Dogg. Don't hold your breath for a Morrissey cameo though ...
Johnny Marr will compose the score to a forthcoming film starring Antonio Banderas and Snoop Dogg. The former Smiths guitarist has been asked to write original music for The Big Bang, a detective film by director Tony Krantz.
"This will be Johnny's first film score and he was just ranked the number one greatest guitarist of all time by Virgin Media," producer Reece Pearson told MovieScore magazine. But while Marr is celebrated for his riffs, he is a relatively unknown when it comes to soundtracks. However, he has already announced a partnership with Ian Brown to score three television dramas, but it is unclear when these programmes will air.
The Big Bang is the story of a private detective, played by Banderas, as »

We are now 45 days away from the season premiere of "Chuck," and to whet our appetites NBC has supplied a scene from one of the early episodes featuring the new, improved Chuck Bartowski.
The scene features Chuck (Zachary Levi) undercover as a guitar player, looking like a nerdier version of Antonio Banderas' "Desperado" character. (Even better, Adam Baldwin's Casey is all frilled up as a bartender.) Apparently, in addition to spy skills, the new Intersect also put some other tools into Chuck's brain -- like how to play the guitar.
As Levi puts it in the video, "it's almost like a caterpillar -- go with me -- to a butterfly." Also featured in the preview is a scene of Chuck delivering a kick to the face of Lester (Vik Sahay) at the Buy More and a shot of Levi filming with former WWE champ "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, »

Two years after his sudden death, what may turn out be Anthony Minghella's final work, Nine – an all-star musical about a director in dilemma – is about to appear. David Thomson hymns his friend 'Ant'
Nine will open wide in America on Christmas Day, and it is certain to be a major contender in the Oscar race. It is the movie version of the musical (book by Arthur Kopit, music by Maury Yeston) that opened on Broadway in 1982, with Raul Julia in the lead role of Guido Contini. In a New York revival, Antonio Banderas played Guido, and when it was given in a concert performance in London Jonathan Pryce played the lead. This is the movie, from the Weinstein Company, and everything has been upscaled. Beyond the astonishing female cast (more anon), it has Daniel Day-Lewis as Guido. There is a hint that in this version, Guido has been upgraded just a little, »

I have a personal kink when it comes to a good old fashioned fairy tale subversion. I can't explain it, but there's just something about messing with those classic tales that never fails to amuse me -- so you can see why I have a soft spot for the Shrek franchise. News of a fourth film first hit back in 2007 and now USA Today gives us our first look at the fairy tale comedy, as well as (good?) news that the fourth installment of the franchise, Shrek Forever After, will be the last (and as much as I liked the first two films, I'll admit that by the time we had reached Shrek the Third, the charm was wearing a little thin).
Bill Damaschke, head of creative production at DreamWorks and Mike Mitchell (Sky High) gave some hints as to what we should expect from Shrek Forever After, and according to Mitchell, »

DreamWorks Animation is ending the Shrek franchise at four films. The final fairy tale — now titled Shrek Forever After and scheduled for May 21, 2010 — promises to be full of pop culture references and celebrity voice overs.
USA Today has the first official photo from Shrek 4 (see below), plus this quote from Bill Damaschke, head of creative production at DreamWorks, “All that was loved about Shrek in the first film is brought to the final film.” Mmm parfaits…
This is a different tune than DreamWorks Animation was singing two years ago when it was factoring in a fifth film already for its animation slate through 2013. I suppose the success of Kung Fu Panda and its upcoming sequel means Dwa can rest easy knowing there’s another franchise out there to milk dry. The article neglects to mention Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots with the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Zach Galifianakis. »

We have our first look at the fourth Shrek movie - Shrek Forever After - courtesy of USA Today. That's the big green ogre below and, apparently, Clay Aiken?
It's a slightly more realistic look than previous versions of Shrek, and there's a good reason for that: The fourth movie will be in 3-D. A lot of that going around these days. And that's not Clay Aiken but rather Rumplestiltskin, who has made brief appearances before in the series. The character will not have a celebrity voice, but is instead brought to life by Walt Dohrn from the Shrek story department.
The May 21, 2010 release date is also the last time we'll have a new Shrek feature in theaters, according to the article. Of course, there's also the Puss in Boots movie with Antonio Banderas, which has been in the works for years now, but DreamWorks is retiring one of the most successful animated franchise ever, »

Ever since Dreamworks Animation announced their line-up for 2009-2012 earlier this year, there seems to have been a distinct lack of info coming out about arguably their biggest upcoming film, the fourth installment in the highly successful Shrek franchise, this time entitled Shrek Forever After (previously Shrek Goes Fourth). More focus has been placed on the spin-off film, Puss In Boots, particularly with voice star Antonio Banderas giving us some insight into what characters will appear in the movie, etc…
However, today, thanks to USA Today, we have our first look at Shrek Forever After, as well as the first in-depth synopsis of the film. Unfortunately the image isn’t high-res, or even that big of a size, but it nonetheless give us our first look at the film which may or may not be highly-anticipated after the critical failure that was Shrek the Third. Here’s the synopsis, as »

While the headline is all about the brand new image from Shrek Forever After – the fourth film in the popular series, there is something else going on in the Shrek-verse which will leave fans divded – Forever After is set to be the last film in the computer popular animated series.
They do say that all good things must come to an end (although I’d say Shrek stopped being good after number 2) and this certainly rings true here. Bringing together the vocal talents of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and later, Antonio Banderas, the Shrek franchise changed the face of animation. With it’s subtle adult humour and colourful animation, Shrek was (and still is) a film that truly has something for everyone.
Dreamworks’ head of creative production, Bill Damaschke, commented on the news simply by saying:
“All that was loved about Shrek in the first film is brought to the final film. »

It’s been known for some time that Shrek Forever After, the fourth and final installment in the Shrek series, is in the works, but very little had been said about what exactly the last film would focus on.
The third film ended with the birth of Shrek and Fiona’s ogre-babies, so it could be assumed that the fourth movie would follow up on the family life of the Shrek clan.
Well, plot details have finally come out, and Shrek Forever After does follow Shrek’s life as family man, but not in the most happily-ever-after way.
Instead, Shrek feels he has become too domesticated. The ogre that used to send villagers running in terror has become a local celebrity, with those who were formerly afraid of him seeking autographs from the big green guy.

Dreamworks Animation have released a couple of new images from the fourth installment of the Shrek franchise, ‘Shrek Forever After’ via USA Today. It’s scheduled for release 9th July and will end the long running series of movies that has been with us since 2001. I can;t believe it was that long ago that the original came out…. a lot has happened since then! The usual cast including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas and Cameron Diaz are back to voice their characters with John Lithgow (who I saw on a London tube a couple of weeks ago!) returns to voice Lord Farquaad. The other character in the image is that of Rumpelstiltskin voiced by Walt Dohrn.
Head of creative production at Dreamworks, Bill Damaschke said: “All that was loved about Shrek in the first film is brought to the final film,”

USA Today have the first images from the fourth, and apparently, final big screen Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After. To be honest, they're not all that scintillating. Of greater interest though, are the newspaper's quotes from director Mike Mitchell on new plot points and characters. The basic story has not changed - Shrek (Mike Myers) has lost his moj- sorry, roar, and finds himself in the company of slippery deal-maker, Rumplestiltskin (Walt Dohrn - not, you'll note, Paul McCartney; don't believe everything you read on IMDb). The grumpy green one is conned into a deal where by finding out what would happened if he never existed, he finds himself in a skewed, It's A Wonderful Life-gone wrong parallel universe where Donkey (Eddie Murphy) pulls a cart, Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas) is fat and lazy, Rumplestiltskin is king, and, as promised - no-one knows who Shrek is.Click the »

I may seem overtly cynical and critical of today's movies, but it's only because I care about quality when it comes to shelling out a few clams for a film. There was a time, long before my fingers even touched a keyboard, where studios and producers were true showman and labored long and hard to craft memorable pieces of entertainment. There are many artisans today who hold the same ideals, but they are few and far between, often having their works lost in the sea of stories and premises recycled over and over again. We the audience should demand to get our money's worth and more, not shrug our shoulders and give a pass to movies that are barely decent compared to all the other crap. Even a powerhouse studio like Disney lost its way over the years long after the passing of its founder. They hit a great stride »

Folks, what can we say - it's coming up on Turkey Day (that's Thanksgiving, for the uninitiated) over in the States, which we suspect is why news coming out of Hollywood is at less than a trickle. To fill the void in your film news-reading time, we offer the following update on a bizarre non-story from mid-2008, with the report from France that Carla Bruni-Sarkozy - yes, French President Nicolas Sarkozy's missus - has apparently taken Woody Allen up on his offer of a role in a future project. Now, that's not to You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, which the auteur director is currently in post-production on (the one with Anthony Hopkins, Frieda Pinto, Josh Brolin, Antonio Banderas and Naomi Watts), but most likely the one after. If we're adhering to Woody's one drama/one comedy routine, Bruni will be appearing in a funny one. It's not »
