What does fit into
the AWARDS list of the IMDb?

Although the award section is mainly designed for awards given on a regular basis it is also designed to keep track of the various awards given in the world of movies at all. It should provide the user of the IMDb with an overview which movie or what person has gained which awards/nominations.

With the above in mind you may add any kind of award, even short-lived awards if you consider those of any general interest.

For example a reader poll of a local newspaper on '100 years of cinema - best film ever' is surely of some general interest (see the examples below to get an idea of how to submit such a thing) whereas the 'movie of the month' in the same newspaper or magazine would be not.

Before you add such awards ask yourself a moment 'Would others all over the world be interested in knowing this?'. And please be honest here ;-)

Please do not include (official) recommendations or (official) certificates of any kind if those cannot be considered an award.

E.g. the Catholic Commission for Media Information in Germany regularly rates movies as 'worth to be seen'. Such a thing is not to be considered an award. It is a recommendation and thus not to be entered into the awards list.

Please don't mix-up movie-related with acting awards. E.g. the Tony Awards are given for stage acting performances, but they are not movie-related. Please don't submit Tony Awards to the IMDb awards list. If you think other than movie-related awards should be included in a person's filmography, please use the trivia section of the biographies list.

Please note that every new award must be added to the AWARDS MASTER list, before you can submit its nominees and winners to the AWARDS list.

List keyword for submissions:

AWARD

Tags for the AWARDS list (in that order):

MV: <IMDb movie title> or a dash (-) if no movie is involved
CY: <company's name> [(<attribute>)] if award is given to a whole company
NM: <person's name> [(<attribute>)] if award is given to a person
EV: <event's name> as specified in AWARDS MASTER list
AW: <award's name> as specified in AWARDS MASTER list
CT: <category> if any
YR: <year of award/event>
RK: <1, 2, 3 or nom> (nom = nominee)
CO: - <additional comment>

See examples with real world data.

Please read the explanations below.
If you have further questions or feel that the following explanations
are misguiding somehow please feel free to contact the maintainer via email.

Detailed explanation
of the submission format

  • MV: <movie title>

Enter the movie title as known to the IMDb or enter a dash if it is a personal award with no relationship to any movie, e.g. a lifetime or a technical award.

Sometimes an award is given for performances in several movies. Please only enter one movie with the MV: tag. Add additional movies to the comment tag (CO:).

    E.g.:

    MV: Panama Deception, The (1992)
    MV: "Star Trek" (1965)
    MV: -

  • NM: <person's name> [(<attribute>)]

Enter the person's name as known to the IMDb if the award is related to a person, i.e. Best Direction, Best Actor etc.

If a Best Picture award is presented to the movie's producer please don't forget to give his/her name here.

The format is <lastname(s)>, <firstname(s)>. Please note the comma behind the person's surname.

There is one exception to the usual IMDb names format and that is if fictious characters like e.g. 'Godzilla' or groups like e.g. 'The Beatles' are awarded. In such a case please put the name in quotation marks.

In order to achieve the goal to keep complete track of awards and due to the fact that information may be hardly to gather especially for older awards you may also enter 'Unknown' if the name of the recipient is unknown, but all other necessary data is known. You should not give that hopefully always temporary placeholder for recent awards.

You may enter several names for one award, if the award is given to more than one person. Enter a new line and tag for every name given. You may mix this tag with the CY: tag for companies.

    E.g.:

    NM: Foster, Jody
    NM: Kurasawa, Akira
    NM: John, Elton (music)
    NM: Rice, Tim (lyrics)
    NM: MacKenzie, Michael (ILM)
    NM: Kennel, Glenn (Eastman Kodak)
    NM: "Godzilla"
    NM: "The Beatles"

Attributes should be given e.g. as company information for technical awards where the award's recipient might not be widely known.

Attributes should also be given where people are awarded together for different achievements as in the example above (music)/(lyrics).

Please note: All attribute information - the data in the brackets - has *two* spaces in front.

  • CY: <company's name> [(<attribute>)]

Enter the company's name here if the award is given to a company, i.e. Best Picture, Technical Award etc.

You may enter several companies for one award, if the award is given to more than one company. Enter a new line and tag for every company given. You may mix this tag with the NM: tag for real persons.

    E.g.:

CY: Industrial Light & Magic (computer graphics department)
CY: Toulouse U Genie Des Systemes
    CY: Kodak Pathe CTP CINE
    CY: Eclair Laboratories (Paris, France)

Please note: All attribute information - the data in the brackets - has *two* spaces in front.

  • EV: <event's name>

Enter the event's name as known to the AWARDS MASTER list.

    E.g.:

    EV: Academy Awards, USA
    EV: Emmy Awards
    EV: Sundance Film Festival
    EV: Cinema magazine, Germany

  • AW: <award's name>

Enter the name of the award as known to the AWARDS MASTER list.

    E.g.:

    AW: Oscar
    AW: Golden Lion
    AW: Emmy
AW: Special Prize of the Jury
    AW: FIPRESCI Award
AW: FIPRESCI Award - Honorable Mention
    AW: Festival's Audience Award

  • CT: <category>

Enter the category of the award if any. Some awards may not have a category, because the award itself is the category, e.g. FIPRESCI (film press award).

Please submit this information beginning substantial words in uppercase.

    E.g.:

    CT: Best Direction
    CT: Best Actress
    CT: Best Supporting Actor
    CT: Worst Film Ever
CT: Outstanding Individual Achievement in Art Direction for a Series
CT: Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series
    CT: Best Short film

  • YR: <year of award/event>

Enter the year the award was given in. Please don't be confused when submitting for example academy awards. The 1994 academy awards were given in spring 1995 and you would enter 1995.

    E.g.:

    YR: 1973
    YR: 1996
    YR: 1930-1

On rare occassions an event may have multiple instances in the same year, e.g. the Academy Awards in 1930. For those special cases - and only for those -, please append a counter with a dash to the year to indicate the event count within that year as in the last example above.

  • RK: <1, 2, 3 or nom>

Enter the rank of the award given (if any) or specify a nominee here.

The following fits here: 1, 2, 3 or nom.
Please don't add something else into the rank tag.

Note: If a movie is an official festival contribution on festivals with a competition but without any prenomination it can be considered a nominee.
However only a festival's official selection films, i.e. the movies which compete for the festival's grand prix are acceptable as nominees. Please don't enter movie's as being nominated which compete for minor awards in other festival sections. Some festivals have up to seven or eight sections with minor awards given and we have to draw the line somewhere.

    E.g.:

    RK: 1
    RK: 2
    RK: nom

  • CO: - <additional comment>

Put here whatever does not fit into the above tags, i.e. scandals, the title of the episode of an awarded TV series, song titles of songs awarded or any other useful additional information. Please put a dash in front of every different information. Please use a maximum line length of 76 characters, then begin a new line.

Cases you will have to give a comment line:
You must give a comment line whenever the award deals with something which cannot be directly identified by a movie title or a person's name and the according category. This includes e.g. song titles for Best Song Academy Awards or episode titles for TV series at the Emmy Awards as well as any official reasons for Honorary Awards or Special Mentions.

    E.g.:

CO: - The decision led to an nation-wide scandal
    CO: in the US, because...

CO: - For the optical design, mechanical design,
CO: engineering and development of the Primo 3:1 zoom lens.

CO: - For the song: "(I've Had) The Time of My Life".

CO: - For episode "The Innkeepers".

CO: - Tied with 'Bo Derek' (qv) in
CO: _Tarzan, the Ape Man (1981)_ (qv).

CO: - Also for his performances in
CO: _Pagemaster, The (1992)_ (qv) and
    CO: _Richie Rich (1992)_ (qv).

* Please remember to always enter two spaces in front of any comment in both awards related lists.

Please remember: All events/awards must first be 'registered' in the AWARDS MASTER list.

Submitting a correction
for the AWARDS list

Before you submit a correction for the AWARDS list be sure that you remember that every single award must be identified by both the event tag (EV:) AND the award tag (AW:). The reason for this is quite easy to understand: Two different events may both have an award with the same name, so the award's name alone would not be enough to identify the award uniquely.

You can correct data for the awards list in two different ways:

  1. Using the exclamation mark

You can use an exclamation mark in front of the data to delete the current data and then re-submit the corrected line.

    E.g.:

    MV: Citizen X (1995) (TV)
NM: ! Nettle, Joyce (casting director)
    NM: Nettles, Joyce (casting director)
    EV: Emmy Awards
    AW: Emmy
CT: Outstanding Individual Achievement in Casting
    YR: 1995
    RK: ! 1
    RK: nom

    MV: It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
    NM: ! unknown
    NM: Capra, Frank
    EV: Golden Globes
    AW: Golden Globe
    CT: Best Director
    YR: 1947

  2. Using the keyword for corrections

You can also use the keyword CORRECT-AWARD to correct data in the awards list. This may especially be more conveniant as solution 1., if you cannot express your correction with a simple deletion.

You can freely describe what is wrong and what should be corrected, because you do not have to stick to a given format. Use as many lines as you need.

    E.g.:

    CORRECT-AWARD
The Fantasy Film Fest's categories Best Actor/Best Actress
were changed into Best Acting Achievement in 1963

Making additional comments
for the AWARDS list

To make a free form comment please use the COMMENT-AWARD keyword.

E.g.:

COMMENT-AWARD
Your comment goes here. Use as many lines as you may need...

How to add an award (step-by-step)?

Now that you have yourself made somehow familiar with what the IMDb awards section is about, you may want to add an award.

It's easy if you know where to click. Let's go through this step-by-step.

  1. Is the award you want to add related to a movie or is it not related to any movie, e.g. a life achievement award? If it is an award of the first category, simply visit the IMDb page of the movie the award was given for. If it is the latter case, please visit the according person's filmography page.

  2. Scroll down the page you have visited. On the bottom of the page you will find a button [Update]. Click on that button.

  3. You will be presented a page with all those IMDb sections you can add data for. Scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" heading and click on the "Awards" checkbox. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the [Add information on the above] button.

  4. You are there. This is the form where you can add the awards data as described in this guide. Fill out the form where appropriate, then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the [Format] button.

  5. Last, but not least step: You will be shown the data that you have entered. Please have a look. Does it look like the examples above? See also the check-list. If you are satisfied, click on the button [Submit this data] and you are done.

Too complicated? It will be as easy as making a coffee on the third time - promise!

Note: The form for awards master data is automatically added below every form to add awards data. However you only need to fill out the awards master form once, when you are going to submit an award which is unknown to the IMDb awards section. Simply ignore the awards master form if you are going to submit an award for which the awards master data is already known.

Most common faults
adding data to the AWARDS list

  • Submitting awards not movie-related.

Please don't submit awards which cannot be considered movie-releated. E.g. I regularly receive additions containing Tony Awards. The Tony Awards are a stage acting award and are by no means movie-related. One day I even received an Olympic medal for inclusion in the AWARDS list.
Awards for movie-related achievements only please.

  • Submitting the wrong year

Please make sure you are submitting the year the award was actually given in. Quite a lot organizations handing out awards refer to their awards as of the year the awards are given for, i.e. the year of eligibility. E.g. the DGA handed out their 1992 awards in spring 1993. Thus you would refer to these particular awards as of 1993, but not 1992.

  • Submitting data without year

Please make sure your submission contains a year at all. Otherwise your data cannot be added and will probably be dropped.

  • Submitting data without a name

Please make sure your submission contains the recipient's name in the proper location, i.e. the NM: tag.

  • Submitting data for an unknown event

Please make sure you are submitting data for an award event which is already known to the IMDb. If you are submitting data for an event not already known chances are that your data will not be processed, because your submission cannot be verified.
You can check for all the events already known on our events overview page.

  • "Inventing" data to fit the submission scheme

Some submitters tend to invent data to fit the AWARDS list's data scheme. Please only submit an award category if there was one. Don't invent one.

  • Making yourself too much work submitting awards

Please don't make yourself too much work with the awards list. Especially with regular errors, e.g. all years of an event are wrong or all winners of an particular year are wrong, it's much more easier to state these fault(s) in a comment using the CORRECT-AWARD keyword. I can batch process most corrections, thus it's not necessary to submit dozens or even hundreds of corrections having basically the same error on it.

  • Using superfluous comment fields

You only need to give comments for names where it's necessary, e.g. if a group of persons is awarded for different achievements or if the achievement differs more or less from the award's category.

    NM: Clausen, Alf (composer)
    NM: Oakley, Bill (lyricist)
    NM: Weinstein, Josh (I) (lyricist)
    EV: Emmy Awards
    AW: Emmy
CT: Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music and Lyrics

There is no need e.g. to specify (actor) for an award with an acting category. Such an information is pretty evident.

  • Using _hyperlink syntax_ (qv) where not appropriate.

Please use IMDb full text hyperlink syntax only in the comment field CO: of the AWARDS list. The MV: tag is automatically linked into the database and does not need that syntax.

AWARDS list submitter's check list

  1. Does your submission have a movie title? (MV:)

  2. Does your submission have a recipient's name? (NM:)

  3. Does your submission have a known event name? (EV:)
If not please submit the new event to the AWARDS-MASTER list.

  4. Does your submission have a known award name? (AW:)
If not please submit the new award to the AWARDS-MASTER list.

  5. Does your submission have the year the award was given in? (YR:)
(A common fault is to submit the year the awards are given for.)

Adding new titles to the IMDb

If you submit AWARD information for titles not in the IMDb your information will not appear online as long as you do not at least submit the title too.

Use the TITLE keyword for that purpose:

TITLE
Camille Claudel (1988)|1988|
Sommerliebe (1993) (TV)|1993|
"Star Trek" (1965)|1965|
"Babeck" (1968) (mini)|1968|

Use quotation marks to indicate a TV series or TV mini series.
Add (mini) to TV mini series'.
Add (TV) to TV movie releases.
Add (V) to video releases.
Add (VG) to video/computer games with movie sequences.
